Hello Teamliquid,

I post this blog in search of help. But let me start with a bit of history first.

I'm super-bad at cooking. My current skill level has reached the point where I can make myself a sandwich. Maybe a salad, if I have the meat ready. Yep, I put meat in my salads, they taste super good. Anyway, sometimes this leads to a rather uncreative and monotone diet sometimes. Seeing as how I enjoy many different dishes when given the chance, I'm looking to rectify that problem by learning to cook properly.

For some reason, grilling has a strong pull for me. Now, you might say that I should begin by doing easier things like a soup or something, but I've looked at some recipes and I should be able to handle the grill from the first try. Maybe second, but I really hope it is not so, as I'll probably never live it down if I burn something. In any case, I'm looking for something like this:

The diameter is supposed to be 55cm, which should be good. Not too small, but not so big that I won't be able to carry it. I do have a backyardish area to put it in, but it's not exactly my yard, so I'll have to lug it around. No big deal. I guess that the legs can be taken out so it could be transported in a car, is that right? Could come in handy if I ever needed to.

Thing is, I don't think I could get that exact model over here, which leads us to some actual questions:
  • Should I be looking for specific materials that the grill is made of when I'm shopping for one?
  • Any particular brands that I should be looking for? Bear in mind that I live in Europe, so not everything that is available to you would be available to me.
  • Is there any special method to cleaning it after I'm done cooking?
  • Aforemention car question.
  • I've seen some recangular grills with a little tableish addition off their side. It looks pretty handy, but it is bulkier. Would you recommend going for one over the circular shape anyway?

That's all I can think of for now, looking forward to plopping that grill down and preparing myself and whoever happens to be on site some meat to enjoy together with a couple of beers on a hot summer afternoon.

I know it must seem daunting with the number and variety on offer but your best bet is just getting out there and checking out as many grills as possible. You don't wanna wake up one day regretting not going up to that one smoking grill at the store. Bulkier grills are usually a matter of taste, alot of guys like to start there for practice as those kinda grills are pretty easy. Regarding transportation you can remove the legs from most grills, just make sure you clean everything up before putting it all in the car or you'll have a bloody mess on your hands. Good luck!

It's okay man everyone's gril problems are different. Some people say "Gril blogs are too often on TL and are overhyped" but I disagree

you should really decide on whether you want to do charcoal, gas, both, etc.. that's going to be a huge point on what grill you get

what kind of area do you live in? (hot humid, hot dry, do you have cold winters?)

I'm pretty much settled on charcoal to be honest, don't really like working with gas of any sort.

As far as climate, it's pretty moderate. Slightly more dry than humid, even tho I live just ~30km from the sea, but other than that everything is pretty regular. Winters aren't too cold, except for this one, we got temps to go as low as -22°C.

Would you recommend using tools to clean up between the legs or just a bit of spit and some enthusiasm?

i use gas so that's what i did my research on... there is a lot you can find with google - just google "top 10 charcoal grills" or something and read all the benefits and features.. it will help you get an idea what to look for (if not which one you want)

Good Eats. If you want to learn how to cook or how to grill, you need to check out Good Eats, by Alton Brown. The show is funny and super informative.

Here's a link to a grilling episode on youtube:
Good Eats s14 e02: Grillus Domesticus
You can easily find more episodes on youtube, or you can check out many of his cookbooks.
