Hi TL!
At the moment I'm unable to play games on my dying PC, so I decided to get my old PS2 out and have some fun. I picked out Final Fantasy X for some reason and I've decided to play through it again.
Now, the last time I played through this game, I got a lot of fun out of it, but I never really felt challenged. Auron and Lulu are simply way too powerful, especially later in the game where Auron is one-shotting EVERYTHING and Lulu can multi-cast Flare. I think I only died a couple of times in all the 80 hours I played, lol.
As far as I can tell, there's no way of actually setting the difficulty higher, which is a shame. Instead, I've decided to set some artificial handicaps on myself. The problem I'm having though, is thinking of some good ones...
I love this game a lot, and I want to make this playthrough as challenging and enjoyable as possible, but I need some help thinking of some limits/handicaps... I'd really appreciate some suggestions. Thanks!
Edit:
Heres what I've got so far. Thank you for the ideas!
No purchasing consumables No celestial weapons No summons No overdrives No sphere grid (not sure if I'll include this, I actually quite enjoy the levelling up in FFX) ONE save every 5 hours of gameplay Use casters as melee Use melee as casters

Would not being allowed to buy consumables be too much?
|
Play Auron only. It's hard because Auron doesn't have much agi. Another good one is Yuna only without summons.
|
The game is easy to finish standard, are you saying you pwned all the dark aeons and stuff?
If you wanna be challenged, just fight the minimum amount possible so you're under leveled.

But suggestions are an easy one, do not get the celestial weapons, or even further, do not upgrade your weapons past basic (a la wooden sword). Do not go to the omega ruins (or the esper training place) as you would level stupidly fast. Never switch characters in a battle (so that only a few ppl get XP).

Do a No Sphere Grid run. They're actually really fun and not TOO hard. If that's still too easy for you do something crazy like No Sphere Grid, No Summons, No Overdrives, No Items.

There are a bunch of interesting challenges that people have completed if you look on gamefaqs. Single character, no sphere grid, no magic, no weapon upgrades, no overdrive, etc. It's a pretty well established scene.
I love single character challenges, recently did FFIX Beatrix solo (well, almost; got stuck at Ipsen's castle), then completed Freya solo (without using maxed out dragon crest, still EZPZ), gonna attempt Dagger solo at some point. Also playing FFVII Tifa solo but that's a total pain in the ass.

Just wanna say have fun with your FF run,I started a new playthrough of FF8 yesterday to relax a bit this weekend :D

wait how do you do the 2nd one? I know the no sphere grid is possible, but is no sphere grid, no summons, no overdrives, and no items even possible? you would just die lol.

Thanks for the input from everyone, much appreciated

I really like the sound of those challenges Paraietta, I'm taking a look at the FFX section of gamefaq but I can't seem to find what you're talking about. Could you possibly give me a link?

Yeah...that's not even all the possible challenges you can stack on. Not by a long shot.

Lmfao I was just about to post that.
Use the characters most weakest offensive/defensive abilities to complete the game.

That actually sounds hilariously fun, I think I'll add this to my list.

I found the no sphere grind challenge to be a very interesting and fun way to play the game. It is such a different experience compared to playing the game normally. If you like grinding you could do the monster arena to max your stats out (really boring though).

The only problem with casters --> melee and melee --> casters, is that in FFX, the sphere grid system makes it so that you can build any character in any way after clearing some lvl sphere nodes and hopping on someone else's sphere track. So maybe only at the early game it'll be a challenge, but late in the game, it doesn't matter anymore.
Yeah I realise that. I'm basically just planning a list to make the game harder for myself in general, I'm not looking to do just 1 challenge, I'm after silly handicaps like this which should make it a bit more interesting and challenging. ^^

As others have mentioned you are describing FFX challenge games, which used to be really big on the gamefaqs community.
I think my sister pioneered the yuna only no sphere grid no summoning/overdrive XD

Yeah i played FF8 a few days ago, and i decided to level some and get squalls final weapon before going for the kill on the last boss. I one shot all her phases, it was kinda dissapointing. FF games usualy have a story line that can be ended @ about lv 20-30ish in most games, but then have optional pparts that are way stronger, but im not sure on FF10.

Updated my first post with a list of handicaps I'll use, thanks for all the ideas. Still open for more though!

Haha wow that sounds pretty intense, how the hell did she do Braska's Final Aeon!? I don't think I'll go for anything like that though. What I'm planning is a fairly normal playthrough with lots of little changes to limit myself and make it more difficult.
