After renting for the past 6 years and reaching the point in my life where i'm pretty much officially done growing, I decided to pick up a board for the rest of this season and onward.

Haven't ever really been a fan of riding park, always liked jumping into powder or carving groomed runs more so I opted for a directional freeride board since it seemed the way to go. Pretty ecstatic to try this out sometime in the coming weeks once I get my research stuff out of the way.

Any advice from fellow riders? I'm planning on getting some stiff boots/bindings to match and otherwise hop on the hill and adjust my carve to match the new board. I have a feeling i'll be making wider turns compared to before?

shot of the board~

longer board = wider turns, Also the bevel in degrees on your edges matter. you should google "how to tune your snowboard'.

Get full-toe bindings, I have a set of ride that go over the toe (as if you're kicking them). They're beautiful.

mmhmm, its notably longer than the rental boards i was using so i guess i'll have to get used to that. and thanks for mentioning the bevel, i hadn't looked into that before

i read that these offer a bit more control? such that when you go onto your heel edge, the board is a little more responsive to the toe pulling it up. i'll try to look for these when i go browsing today. thanks for the suggestion :D

well that depends if he goes into deep powder full toe binding can cause more drag.

you can leeave the edges at 0 degrees and 0 degrees until you know what you want. changing the bevel to either an actual bevel appearance or an inverted grind into a chisel appearance for your edge will widely change what the snowboard does. You should also want to buy a tool to bevel it with, specifically for snowboard if you do not have hand tools at home that you can measure and accurately apply metal rasp to the edge and get perfect bevel. Do not do this by free hand unless you have experience using rasps to grind metal edges as incidental knowledge.

Most hand tools sold for bevelling are cheap, hard plastic with preset angles for both the side and bottom of the metal snowboard edge. Don't bevel until you are absolutely sure you know what you want and how to do it with the tool, because replacing an edge you messed up gets expensive and/or tedious.

thanks for the heads up humanfails. i've been trying to find some good beveling guides to explain the differences to try and understand how i'd bevel the edge. Out of curiosity, can i ask how you chose to bevel yours and why? what benefits it offered you in particular that made you choose it, and any set backs that may have been a side effect of it?

I managed to find a stiff pair of boots from Ride and an overtoe binding from forum yesterday with a stiff highback so for now, i'm all set to hit the mountain i guess. will have to experiment with the new turning radius though and get a feel of things
