This list is designed to capture an ort of our collective unconscious: the words that have become so a part of our temporary lexicon that we – newscasters, television writers, sports announcers, bloggers – cannot help but use them. Many of our fans did not like the idea of censoring any word use or diction, but of course we’re not talking about removing words or actually censoring select words. (Read of discussion of when words are removed from the dictionary here.)
Many of you also understood where the impetus of the list was coming from and suggested words to add. The most popular addition by far was the word “epic.” As Preston pointed out, the word “epic” originally referred to epic poems, from the Greek word epikos meaning “word or story.” Epic was on the banished word list for last year 2011, but the word obviously wasn’t banished well enough as frustration with it continues.
Many other proposed additions have been banished in past years, including: like (1997), LOL (2004), random (2008), brand (2004) and not so much (2009). One word “basically” has appeared on lists three separate years in 1984, 1986, and 1993.

So my question to TL.net is, what is TL's ban list for words? I will attempt to daily read through the thread and update this post with any new ones I find. At times I will also do it hourly. I will continue until I see this thread start to die. Please add reasoning if it isn't something obvious. Also, please read my quote from 2010 that continued to 2011. Some people misuse "mechanics", but I don't think it's that bad yet.
We should ban ESPORTS, except when used in parody or satire, as the all-caps spelling annoys me, and people grossly misuse it, or are at least hypocritical about it.

The only thing that's really bothering me is the use of offensive words in thread titles. Seeing "fuck" "fucking" "shit" etc. all over the front page is not really what I'd expect tbh. I may be exaggerating a bit but the other day I saw literally 3 thread titles that included such words. one in sc2 section and 2 in the blogs section iirc. Just a minor inconvenience though.

An all-in has no transition. If it fails, you should lose.
However, I see these words being misused all the time. People just don't seem to know what they mean, or choose to ignore the definition. That's why I think they should stop using them for a while.
Also, you should add "whine" to the list.

"All-in" is serverely abused. If you can successully transition out of it when it fails, than it's not an all-in. Now there is some chance to come back if you kill enough of your opponents workers but still fail to win outright. But generally if you don't kill many workers and can still win by transitioning to another strategy, than it is not an all-in, is it?
2 hatch Muta is not an all-in, for example. You don't have to win with it, just do enough damage and you can move onto Hive tech. 2 hatch Lurker is perhaps an all-in though, as you either need to win outright or completely obliterate the Terran's natural along with some SCVs or you cannot transition out of it.
As for SC2 and casters such as Tastosis proclaiming "all-in" every 3rd game or so, it's quite absurd.
I think "timing attack" is also ridiculous at this point. It's when you maximize your army and time it for a point when your opponent is busy expanding, teching, or powering. It's more than just attacking when you have ammassed a good army. It must be also be tied to a moment of weakness for your opponent. Recent SPL spoilers:
+ Show Spoiler +Flash vs Soo and Jaedong recently. Now that is a timing attack people. MMF pressure when the zerg only has a handful of lings. Flash timed it perfectly to destroy greedy Zerg play.
The SC2 casters don't do too terrible with calling "timing attacks" and they are often correct when it's an early game attack, but they sometimes call it too far into the game for it to really adhear to any specific timing.

Yeah I pretty much agree with you about cheese and all-in. The problem is, by those definitions there are plenty of cheeses that fall into the all-in category and vice versa. That's why it doesn't really bother me which word people use. Many cheeses are also all in and many all-ins are also cheeses so eh, everyone knows what people mean when they say one or the other, no big deal (although it's good to remind people what the real meaning is occasionally, like with the word push).

Yes, I think TL's mods needs to be even more draconian in their ban and warning usage. Anyone who ever mentions anything about any meme whatsoever, the majority of Internet-originated abbreviations and doesn't include a ~500 words minimum essay in their every single one of their posts should be instantly banned from this site. You should also ban all swear words and any improper grammar, punctuation and spelling while you're at it. This is certainly the correct way to improve poster quality and lead to more fruitful discussions.
You should also ban sarcasm, as that is hard to convey properly over the Internet and has led to countless misunderstandings.
