First things first: I have no idea how Quark is called in other countries. It's a german milk product and I don't even know if you can buy it everywhere. But! Should you be able to, please don't miss out on one of the best all-around meals ever!

It is:
- cheap
- quickly prepared
- gives you all the energy you need
- provides you with mass proteins for muscle growth and everything else
- has the ideal amount and composition of the different types of fats (yes, fat is neccessary for your health)
... and tastes just great!

Now you may say: "that's great! as a single I am always too lazy to cook complicated things. but I don't want to eat fast food all the time." and you may want to ask, "my german friend, how do we prepare this wondermeal?"

Simple! You need (one person):

Core stuff:
- a few hard potatoes (organic if possible, like 3 big ones or 6 very small ones)
- 500 g of low-fat Quark (don't worry, we add the fat later)
- half an onion
[image loading]
- about two table spoons of linseed oil
- salt

Optional:
- fresh Chives if you have them ("Schnittlauch" in german, I hope this is the right translation)
- some Lactase if you are lactose-intolerant or are cooking for people who may be
- personal taste: tabasco, pepper

How to do it:
- cut the potatoes in half if they are big then throw them into a pot (don't remove the shell of the potatoes)
- fill water in the pot until they are fully covered, add in a bit of salt
- let it boil for a long time (they are finished when you can put in a fork easily)

Now while the potatoes are cooking you cut the oninon into small pieces and mix the Quark, the onion, the salt, the oil and the optional ingredients together.
Serve together with the potatoes - that's it!

Now, dosage of linseed oil may vary; if you are very skinny and want to get more body fat or you do some big body building then you may need more of it but I guess in this case you may know yourself how much you need. That's another great thing about this meal: You can adjust carbo hydrates, fats and proteins however you want! Even if you want to lose fat I would not advise to use less then one table spoon of oil however. First it doesn't taste well and second you body needs fat to function well.

Another interesting fact is that linseed oil contains about 10% saturated fats, 18% single unsaturated and 72 % multiply unsaturated fats. This is close to the recommended <10 % saturated and 10 - 15 % single saturated (*)

Important: All the ingredients must be fresh (ok except the salt but you know what I mean)

P.S.: If you are lazy and don't mind (like me) you don't even have to remove the potatoe's shells before eating! In this case I would definitely recommend organic potatoes, however.

It's easy to make, extremely cheap, nutritious, healthy and it tastes pretty damn good for such a simple meal.

I got to know that dish from my father's side of the family. During the war, they had to resort to simple yet healthy meals. This is one of them. Such a childhood memory... Unfortunately, I can't seem to find real quark ("curd" actually might be the English term) in France. Fuck haute cuisine, seriously, this is the real deal!
Always smile~

our american friends here just have no similar substitution. There simply is no Quark in the US. The even use cream cheese for cheesecake I'm not sure about other countries. Might be a speciality, as basic as it seems.
Things are laid back in Unidenland. And may the road ahead be lid with dreams and tomorrows. Which are lid with dreams. Also.

Ok I now added in pictures but I hope I won't get a lawsuit now as I just took them from google images. Quark is not a name of a company, it is described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quark_(cheese)

However some of the pictures in that wikipedia article look different then german quark so I guess there are different versions of it.

In OZ, we have a similar dish. Jacket potatoes with sour cream and chives.
Wash the spuds and leave the skin on.
Wrap your potatoes in alum foil and bake them till soft. You can serve them with the foil on. Just cut through the foil into the top vertically about half way down the spud and squeeze. The potato will open up. (Careful, they're hot!) Dollop the sour cream on the potatos and sprinkle with the chives. Serve with your fav steak and tossed salad.
Has that guy got the cork out yet??

Probably is most similar to yogurt or a very thick sour cream, both of which are very delicious in this type of application : )

you should try eating 40% fat quark as a dessert. add some lemon juice (or any fruits of your choice) and sugar... tastes so goddamn fucking amazing. you will never ever again eat low fat quark. never.

Did anyone else immediately think of how awesome it would be to see a TV show with Deep Space 9's Ferengi? Cooking with Quark!

So I after reading this blog I randomly found quark on sale at my local market (YDFM in decatur, ga fyi) and decided to try this out, took some pictures too.

I didn't have linseed oil or chives, but I did add olive oil, dill, and salt/pepper. It was pretty good, but next time I might add fewer onions as they got pretty oniony the next day and was too much. The quark itself is a bit like sour cream but not as sour and a little more creamy. Thanks for sharing this recipe with us on TL, I like trying new things .
