Introduction

Troll, In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion. Orly? Trolls are everywhere my good friends.

Trolling has been an art for so many years. Many have not noticed. Whether it was that strange kid in your science class that always ate the glue for attention or the smart kid that used big words in conversations with dumb girls. You see, trolling is now known all over the internet as an infamous art. But how do you catch a troll? How do you know when a troll is a good troll, and how do you understand the trolls mindset? What does he WANT you to think.

We can name some Trolls, easily. Deezer has always been a troll, stream cheating and calling influential members in the Starcraft Community provocative names. But Deezer is a dumbass. And children, there is a difference between a Troll and a dumbass. Let us get down to business.

Good Trolls

What do you think of when you see a "Good Troll". I am not talking about someone who trolls for the good of society, but someone who is good at the trolling the victims of the internet. Trolls come in all different shapes, sizes, and mindsets. Good trolls are the smart ones. They don't call you stupid to your face, but they read your forum post and correct things, some of their arguement doesn't make sense what-so-ever. The smart trolls never insult you to the face, they say a big word that the average 10 year old wouldn't understand, if you meet someone saying big words, they are trolling you. Look at teachers... Coincidence? I think not...

You cannot hide, they are everywhere...

Bad Trolls, so bad...

You see, bad trolls are not that hard to find. It's quite simple. They are usually fifteen year olds who believe they hold the key to your virginity, and if you do not possess this key, you will never become a happy person. Do you understand? Well if you do not, let me clarify. These trolls often say something about your mother, your family, your sister, and then they start talking about how you will never lose your virginity, soon they ask you about your sex life, and finally they attack you with questions about what you believe in, if you are in school, etc. You see, some of these trolls say they dropped out, they lost their parents, they are quite the compulsive liars. And most of them were World of Warcraft and Call of Duty players who switched over to Starcraft. Are you suprised to hear that? You shouldn't be. Be careful and watch out for bad trolls in the general chats and stream chats.

/facepalm

The Final Layer of the Pyramid -- The Dumbass

The Dumbass holds great dumbassity, you see, most dumbasses are LIKE the bad trolls, but worse. You see, they actually are 92% of all the Battle.net posters. Dumbasses actually are the QQ-ers, the stream snipers, etc. You see, if you go on the NA Battle.net posts, you won't be surprised. There are so many Zerg and Protoss tears it could provide the amazon with rain for a year. Do you see, they invade websites and run out the good posters, they are 10 year old children/expert RTS game designers who plan to take over the world with their analytical thinking and problem solving skills. The dumbasses on the forums usually set their homepage to the Battle.net and check regularly for the posts. What I did there, was explain that the whole forum on Battle.net is quite controversial and a very bad reference point if you are planning on writing an Thesis on "Marine Balance and How it Would Change Society." So my good friends, watch out for the dumbasses, they lie everywhere. Even your family might have some.

How To Destroy the Troll

Is it possible? No, Trolls cannot be destroyed, but they can be banned. Ask Teamliquid admins, he-who-shall-not-be-named has been banned, and he will never return. Trolls are not people, friends. They are beings made purely of intentional aggrivation. They are driven by other peoples responses, so the best way to stop a troll. Turn off your browser before you make any mistakes... o.o

Good Luck, and remember...

They are everywhere.

That is ridiculous. Can everything be called trolling now?

I can call you out right now as being a "troll" for saying something so dumb above, but that would go against my belief that trolling is a completely different thing.

Everyones definition of trolling seems to be different nowadays. According to wikipedia "a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion." The key-words, as you noted, are "in an online community."

Also, to quote wikipedia once more, "The idea of defining trolling is in many ways comical at best." There are no precise ways to define love or hate, just as there is no exact way to define trolling. By setting up a hierarchy of trolls you assume that "trolling" (whatever that means) can be measured, but just as you can't measure love, there is no way to say who is a good or bad troll, they're just trolls.

yea like most people really dont get what trolling is...

It's trying to make someone believe something you DONT actually believe, while pretending to believe it, in order to excite a reaction out of them.

But whatever it's a pointless term now since it'se used to brokenly on in the internet...thx mainstream

Exactly, man. There are so many people who don't know what trolling is.

Like when a news caster is talking and you see a guy in the background doing silly stuff.
People immediately go, "LOL WHAT A GOOD TROLL."

No, he's just being a funny guy, that's got nothing to do with trolling.

There are a lot more scenarios where people are generally just poking fun or being a little (or excessively) silly, but a lot of them are not trolling.

I'm a 15 year old but I'm a nice "troll"

I live in northern Canada, in the Yukon, and my pet polar bear is called Momo and I live in an Inuit village, my internet shuts off in 15 minutes and I managed to connect cords so I can have internet in my igloo. Instead of water we drink maple syrup because he's healthier (no sugar) and I just moved here because my parents couldn't take the heat in Arizona.

My friend's little cousin actually believed me (over skype), he was like, 10. He says he wants to live in the Yukon with me one day! Won't he be surprised

What about the ones that talk to 12 year old kids on Xbox Live and piss them off and keep provoking them? Example: http://www.youtube.com/show?p=zIO-OSfX19w&tracker=show0
I love doing that, their funny insults translate into blood to feed my warrior's soul (wat)

trolling isn't an infamous art, it's just stupid. if you're "trolling" and someone says "you're such a troll," then you're not actually a troll, you're just an idiot posting false information that got caught. There is nothing inflamatory about trolling, trolling is that little snicker you get in the back of your mind when you decieve someone, not when everyone in the thread is like LOLOL OP IS SUCH A TROLLOLOLOL. Just like your OP, it's inflamatory, but it's not trolling, so you're not a troll, you're just a nerd who thinks that being called a troll has some kind of positive connotation. In closing, silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way.
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

You sir are a troll. I live in the Yukon and its nothing like that :/. Although there's not much to do up here and it get kinda boring (why I play StarCraft) its still get to plus 20 in the summer all through out the Yukon. And if you do actually live in the Yukon you probably live in Whitehorse, which looks like any other small town or "city" as its called. We might even be in the same classes....unless you droped out.

"Troll" has lost its meaning. I know I'm going to get a lot of flak for this, but trolling used to be something one had to be relatively intelligent to do. Let me explain. Back in the day, as in a few years ago, if you said something stupid -- people would just call you a fucking idiot and end it there. Much like real life. There was no "LOLLTROLLXD" or whatever. It was just, "You're an idiot go away" and everyone ignored them from then on out. So, to get people pissed off or mislead them in some fashion (far more fun) -- which is the intention of trolling -- you had to be.....what's a good way to put this.

Perhaps intelligent was the wrong word. Clever makes far more sense. Yes, you had to be clever to do it back in the day. You needed to take something true, misconstrue it, and get someone with it. It's not about correcting errors in someones post. It's not about looking like an idiot. It's not about doing something stupid. It's about saying something so incoherent, yet intelligent. Something so stupid, yet with foundation. Something so inflammatory, yet partially true -- that people would get either pissed off or genuinely believe it. Trolling is just selling bullshit to people, to put it straight.

Nowadays, "troll" comes in all shapes and sizes. If someone disagrees with you, you are a troll. If you say something silly on Facebook, you're a troll. If you act like a complete and total idiot, you can just say "lolol I was just trolling! XD GOT YOU!" and use that as a backdoor out. You would think that with this surge of awareness of "trolls" that it would go down. Quite the contrary, in fact, it's one of the greatest ironies of modern internet "culture", if I may put it like that. That people respond to all the bullshit that isn't even remotely trolling with "TROLL XD LOL UR SUCH A TROLL", but stuff that is legitimate trolling people seriously reply to.

As Endymion put it oh so eloquently. "True" trolling is deceiving someone, and that small grin you get on your face when you do it successfully. I do also agree that people who go around "trolling" are pathetic and childish -- however, who doesn't like to fuck with gullible people every once in a while?

Wow, the creator of this blog is such a good troll.

You wouldn't realize that he is trolling you until you put more thought into it. I'm kind of ashamed to say that I was fooled at first.

This is my humble understanding. Originally trolling had nothing to do with the internet. It was the slow ring when someone died being contrasted with a peal or a chime. trolling even was so famous that great literary works were based on it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_Whom_the_Bell_Trolls. But trolling has since died into obscurity when our phones stopped ringing because we needed all the phone lines for America Online. Now only the computer literate troll so their phone rings when they get an email or their post on the forum. Unfortunately trolling is confused with satire these days because it's funny to everyone who reads it barring no one. But you need to make the difference between the trolling and satire because trolling comes from a bell and satire comes from a "plucked string instrument" (wiki, ln 8). The main problem is that everyone thinks they can troll just by asking for more cowbell even though its not a real bell. The joke is so old it can't even be used on saturday nights. And that is my humble understanding.

Also since i cite wiki it has to be true, verified by millions every second.

Trolling has become a meme and like anything that is a meme is robbed of its humor or sophistication. I didn't even read your post because it used meme images. That's all I need to see to know it isn't funny or original. I dream of a state in which laughing or even smiling at a meme image is punishable by firing squad.

Yeah, kids and idiots have no idea what the word is supposed to mean. To pin it down even more...

I think the heart of the matter is that it's easy to fuck with people in anonymous situations (as online), especially because most people are dumb and lack awareness, but more so just because there's no prior reason to doubt or avoid you. Thus, the true meaning involves first getting intelligent people to ignore you as an idiot, and then win back their serious attention with nonsense that flirts with legitimacy. This definitely requires either cleverness or a knack attained through practicing your nearly-coherent gibberish, laced with just the right amount of incendiary bait.

Anyway, it involves a trick of judgement, where the object of the trick relents on their doubt and succumbs to the human urge to "be real", which they were lured into and then the deception was successful.

This OP is pretty bad either way, and the world has passed by another phase where words meant something, so none of us should get wistful; it gets worse all the time, meh.

Yeah this wasn't bad, in fact it has some very nice touches, even inspired you could say. But the angle of attack gives it away as an example and not a real effort. Not to be critical.

Just like your OP, it's inflamatory, but it's not trolling, so you're not a troll, you're just a nerd who thinks that being called a troll has some kind of positive connotation. In closing, silly things do cease to be silly if they are done by sensible people in an impudent way.

This is TL do you think there's even a shred of a chance that people are ever going to use popular terms correctly?... We can dream can't we
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Oh goodness me, FOX tv where do you get your sight? Can't you keep track, the puck is black. That's why the ice is white.

Nice trolling by the op. Too bad he's not 10 yet so he could fit into his own dumbass category.

Trolling is usually an intentional logical fallacy meant to deceive or confuse someone. Most prominent example I can think of is "Hey atheist, if man evolved from monkeys how come therevare still monkeys. Christians: 1. Atheist: 0". That's a pretty old example. I think fruscainte covered what trolling is surprisingly well. Normally, everyone on here is a fucking idiot redditdrone who spout Memes.

You are like a professional mine sweeper with years of training yet manages to blow himself up without defusing a single mine.

I like to think of myself more like a doctor who just performed brain surgery with a spork, to be honest.
