Hey guys,
I'm SO amazed right now.
The mechanical keyboard thread made me curious, so I bought a cheap mechanical keyboard made by Cherry and now I'm just typing for typing's sake.
Each keystroke is super satisfying, not to mention the sound the keyboard makes. Also, it feels more natural and type-writer-esque and though I'm not typing anything special, I feel like I'm some famous author, writing his master-piece.
I don't expect any response to this as I'm just typing so as to hear the awesome melody of the keystrokes and get accustomed to this board of beauty, but if you want to answer, only do so using a mechanical keyboard.
Regards,
K.
Ps.: Playing SC2 and feeling like such a pro *drool*

I'm curious about the durability of these though. Do people who use mechanical keyboards use their other keyboards for browsing/writing reports and essays and their mechanical for just gaming, or do they use the mechanical 24/7? With such an expensive piece of hardware, I'd be afraid to wear it out!

Mechanical keyboards are actually much more durable than other "standard" cheap keyboards, which is one of the reasons people who type a lot can benefit from them.

Yeah, I have been really curious about one for awhile now and I think I will go ahead and get one for Christmas. Right now I am looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823330017.
I heard MX Browns are most optimal for gaming but I am not sure. I wish there was someplace where I could actually feel the keys and shit so I could make a more informed decision....
I have also been looking at the Razer BlackWidow. I would really prefer a keyboard with backlit keys. I am so used to it now :S
|
Enki, i would reccomend the keyboard you linked, i use it and it simply feels amazing, no dull macro keys and stuff like the blackwidow. My version is called Qpad mk-80, however they are literally the exact same keyboard. (beside on-print logos)

I have a mechanical keyboard(Filco Majestouch MX Cherry Blue), and I never felt regret at all buying it Feels like....well is like driving a Ferrari instead of some "normal" car(you get the idea)... Crap, I don't feel like wanna stop typing now. What I did to always feel my keyboard was to go to play.typeracer.com and just write stuff, lol~
Welcome to the mech keyboard club

Wow just played the racing game and I love my mech keyboard even more now <3

That's a pretty bad analogy, I, and I think the vast majorities of others here, have never driven a Ferrari so we don't get the idea. I bought a new keyboard for $10, didn't know mechanical ones could be so cheap.

There are animated gifs so you can see the action and force diagrams so you can get a sense for the pressure points. They also list many different models of keyboards with different switch types.

Corsair released a new line of gaming peripherals today. I have the K90 and M90 on preorder from Newegg. They both look super sweet. The K90 has Cherry MX Reds, backlit keys with adjustable light level, macro keys, and appears to have generally solid construction. The M90 has almost as many buttons as the Razer Naga, but with a much more ergonomic layout. I haven't been able to find any reviews on either of these peripherals since they don't appear to have given out any press previews, so I'll post a full review once I get them.

The keyboard wearing out should be the least of ur concerns.

The main problem with mechanical keyboard is that they look ugly. I found the perfect keyboard for me: not only is it mechanical, small, it also looks pretty sexy. If other mechanical keyboards are the ferrari at $150, the HHKB is the Pagani.
This isn't my actual keyboard, because yeah: they can be even sexier. Mine has a red ESC key.

Got a new CM Storm right before Thanksgiving and will post it in the Keyboard thread when I have time but it's sooooo fuckin awesome. Typing on Cherry Browns reminds me of when I got my laptop for college, makes me just want to sit down and type an essay!

That keyboard looks line someone went a little heavy with the shitty spraypaint.
Only thing I ask for in a keyboard aesthetically wise is that it be tame. No crazy god damn lights or ridiculousness form factor.
Also I use my numpad constantly, never got the tenkeyless boards.

I want my friend's DAS keyboard so badly....... :[
Mechanical keyboards' click sounds are so freaking addicting

Rosewill's been selling some keyboards lately that are basically rebranded Filcos, so if anyone wants a Filco but thinks it's too expensive, they should look into those. Think they're selling Blues, Reds, Browns, and Blacks.
I have a Blackwidow, Blue. I do a lot of typing -- like ... a lot -- so it's definitely been worth the investment. Wish it came ten-key-less and macro-key-less, though, but it was super-cheap.

I played three games with my friend's Steel Series mechanical keyboard at a LAN over Thanksgiving break...Oh my god.
My average APM jumped up 40 from my usual.
"lolwut?" you might find yourself saying...I can hear the arguments clearly: "Unpossible! Keyboards don't make the player!" "You were just in the zone, nothing to do with your keyboard!"
and so on...
Why did my APM jump so much? Because pressing the keys on that little piece of perfection was better than sex, and I just started looking for excuses to press more keys more often.
Thank god for having good mechanics, because all 40 of that extra APM turned into pure, unrelenting macro (like a bawss) with the occasional micro because I could.
Suffice to say, I'm asking for one for Christmas, and I'll buy one myself if I don't get it.
Congratz on your new keyboard man, may it serve you well =D

That sounds really awesome LOL. My friends who have mech keyboards all say the same thing, I want one even more now. T.T

I played a game once, it was called "typing of the dead", it was pretty much a remake of the Night of the Dead arcade game where you shoot down zombies, the twist is, you gotta type the words in order to kill the zombies, the more typos you make, they get closer and you'll get hit (or if you type too slow).

hehe, welcome to the mech KB club.
once you're in there's no going back. same with the audiophile club.
I'm a part of both sadly.
As a result, I am applying Starcraft macro skills to my wallet so frequently. While I do appreciate all my gear, the empty wallet does get annoying now and then.
