ok, so i've been playing way too much fifa lately (on pc), it was $16 on origin 2 weeks ago. 24" monitor, picked up a a 360 wireless controller receiver, and i just use my xbox controllers.
division 1 is addictive. i play on average like 10 games a night (6 minute halves, seems forever, and it is). got about 4 league titles, which you have to score about 20 points from 10 matches. seems easy, right? not really, division 1 is the top 1% of FIFA players, and when you draw a few matches you end up losing points because wins are 3 points, draws are 1 point, losses are no points. you experience the same stuff, playing on rage, losing a ton because you're playing on rage, and etc. i haven't been laddering because of fifa i was high plat and was looking for promotion to diamond but it doesn't look like its going to come since i'm spending so much time on fifa.
anyways, "build orders":
speed attacking: these players pick teams like real madrid or man city, and put speedy players up top. ronaldo and benzema up top is by far the most common formation i see. these players usually absorb pressure that i throw at them (i'll get into my "build order" in a second). the second they get the ball back, they push up field as fast as they can. if the rest of their team can't keep up, EFF them, this isn't a joke, this is FIFA! if you get unlucky and have an off day or they lob perfect balls over the top then you're screwed, but usually if you keep possession you keep them from scoring.
possession play: this is my game plan, ALWAYS. i average about 55-65% possession in all of my matches. the idea here is to bore your opponent to death so that eventually he has a lapse and makes a mistake. i've won plenty of games 1-0 because i have had 60% possession in the match. the general idea is not to lose the ball, and so you have to limit crosses into the box because its difficult to control who gets to it and who doesn't and where the ball ends up. so generally, you attack throw the middle and try to find holes in the defense and score from a shot in front of the goal.
defend all day: very few of these players, but when you face them, you can easily get upset because they'll put 5-6 players behind the ball at ALL times. these guys are very disciplined because they NEVER bring defenders to attack. they hit you on the counter and make you pay for being too attack minded
mixed: these players are even more rare then the ones that defend all day. really, its a mix of defend all day and speed attacking. they play formations specific to defending all day, and then have 2 speedy players up top. its really very mixed, and they are usually the hardest to beat because they know EXACTLY what they are doing.
anyways, i wish competitive fifa community was as big as sc2/bw community, but there isn't much to watch and even if there was, i would probably still prefer to watch real football instead. if you need help with fifa and are just beginning, let me know.

5/5 FIFA FTW!!! Such a great game....

Which team you usually play with?
I hope youre not one of those 100000000 Barca newbies hehe...

Fifa12 is 5/5!

Definitely defend all day! My style is 5-2-2-1 defensive and good luck to anyone who thinks they can score more than 1 goal against me. I try to abuse Pizarro headers on the counter attack and use fast wingers 94/95 speed to counter.

I used to play pro evo ... how does this compare? I know that fifa in the past was kinda looked down upon by the PES crowd, but I hear it has been getting better and better while PES has been staying the same or getting worse.

i really only play fifa, i tried playing pro evo, but its very different and i hate that it doesn't have the licensing that fifa has.
i play with arsenal and england usually.

PES used to be the game of choice for football (soccer) console players. However, in the recent years, FIFA has made significant steps forwards whilst PES stayed stagnant. FIFA is now considered the superior game by many.

Well I've got the same Question. Is there a big FIFA-community site out there? (Like TL just way smaller would be awesome) Or is there a site out there in europe with many tournaments for FIFA12?(not ESL, 4pl)
In Germany we had FIFA11 till the last season of EPS, but it has been kicked out, prob. because other games are more supported by their producers(I don't think there are as many World of Tanks players out there as FIFA players, esp. in Germany, but thats a different topic).
Back to topic:
I've experienced quite a lot of success with a personally built 4-3-3, with 1 cdm and 2 offensive midfields, because I am pretty confident in my defending with just 5 ppl and then I attack alot, about 50-55% posession in a game(using Real Madrid, should work with Barca too). I'm also playing on "defensive" the hole time, so that my defence doesn't run too much into the oppenents side. For the defensive/counterattacking players, I recommend a 5-1-2-2 or 5-2-1-2 with Brazil, because the Brazilian players are fast as hell(Neymar, Robinho) and their defense is strong.
I'm going to bed now. I hope my English isn't too bad, because I have never written anything about Football in English^^
P.S. Maybe blogging a lil bit about FIFA too, hoping for some in depth discussion

I feel like fifa can't be taken seriously because people can always choose the best teams in the game( real madrid/barca) and simply win against anyone else of equal skill level.
Same with fifa ultimate team, that mode purely rewards people for time spent playing. ( you are rewarded a currency even if you lose) and the more you play, the more currency you get. In the end, people just end up buying the same fast players, and beat other people who may be better than them by simply pressing one button, and running past a whole team.
I am a liverpool fan, and I can't even use my favorite team because if the other person chooses real madrid or barcelona, I HAVE to pick one of the opposite teams. (And I win like 90% of the time) It makes for a boring game....
The game is pretty good, but there are so many bugs that make it frustrating...

Play your favourite team, my friend is a diehard Arsenal fan and plays wayyyy better than he does with Barca, just because he knows the team inside and out and knows how to exploit every team with them. Same for me, I play Man City and routinely beat Barca/Real whores. Play Liverpool, dedicate to your team and you can overcome!
