So, I hit 4k. I forgot to do anything special for 2k and 3k, and damnit, I wasn't going to forget this time too. Anyway, this *started* as a blog about how awesome tl is, especially some of the subcommunites that dwell here, when I realized something, something simple, yet astoundingly deep,
Ready?
Team Liquid is full of awesome people. "Well, yes", I hear you say, "and what of it? How is this 'deep'?" What is deep about it is this. Team Liquid is full of awesome people, most of which spend the majority of their time living in their own small subcommunities, and most of which, for that reason, I will never get to know. Seriously, how many people here who are not from the mafia community know who Kavdragon is? How about Qatol? Anyone? Yet these people are incredible folks, who I am proud to consider my friends. Yet anyone who doesn't play mafia may never have the privilege of hanging out with them, or even knowing why they are awesome.
This made me immensely sad, there are so many people who, frankly, have a lot to share, and I might never get to know them because I'm too focused on my own little plot of land to see them, for example, I know that JingleHell posts in techsupport, that is literally all I know about him, I know that MoonBear is someone who does enough to get his own AMA, yet that is all I know about him. This is terrible! I could not allow this state of inequity to continue. There are people I need to get to know! So I did what I usually do when I encounter something that displeases me, I found a solution.
It is for this purpose that I present the Team Liquid Exchange Program
The Team Liquid Community Exchange Program
As easy as building a potato cannon!
So, what exactly am I proposing? It is simple, because there are literally hundreds of awesome people I would like to meet, I am going to go and explore one of the subcommunites I know nothing about for a period of two weeks. I will either become a regular there, or get to know a bunch of awesome people. Its win win! Then I will move to another subcommunitie, and so on and so forth. Eventually I will have at least explored every section TL has to offer.
Do I know anything about Map Making? No, (other than that barrin became a banling by working there). Does it matter? No, because I intend to hang out in the Map Making forum for the next two weeks and find out anything I can about the topic. I will post even if it is to ask noob questions, I will PM people who are making huge posts and great threads to get to know them better. I will educate myself on the topic, and by extension learn about myself and the people who make up TL.
Because in the end we are a bunch of passionate fans of esports, in one way or another, and its a freaking shame that I might miss out on knowing people and making friends simply because "DotA2 doesn't interest me". I cannot know it doesn't interest me! I haven't gotten to know it alongside the awesome people which I know for a fact inhabit that subforum.
"You exaggerate" I hear you think, "everyone knows everyone on TL!". Yes and no, I am of the belief that we are highly segregated, and that many, many of us stick to our little communities, where we know everyone, because we "don't care" about whatever it is that is going on elsewhere. This is exasperated by the very awesome possibility of customizing your sidebar so you never have to see things again. Some might argue that there aren't that many subcommunities here, which is why I was kind enough to compile a list of them. I skipped the very obvious General, SC2 and SC:BW sections. Although I think that we should all take the time to explore those. Some of these communities have forums, others are limited to threads, all are awesome.
Subcommunities of TL (in no particular order) Dota2 LoL Diablo 3 TL Mafia Health and Fitness The Anime Thread (#tladt on Rizon) The Pony thread The automated ban list (hardly self contained, there are still "regulars") Tech Support Mapmaking Blogs (sort of) EVE Maplestory Liquipedia (#liquipedia on quakenet IRC) Korean Music Discussion Nada's Body Minecraft Guild Wars Skyrim Touhou thread (I... don't even know what that is...) the gay starcraft player thread (if you can think of some that haven't occurred to me post them here or PM me and I will add them to the list)
The thing is, I'm almost 100% certain that this is not all of them, since there are probably several "thread based" communities, which I'm simply not seeing because those are circles I don't move in.
So, because I can, I'm going to start with Mapmaking and see who I get to know there. Then I will move somewhere else.
This is my recommendation to you, do exactly what I am doing, pick a community out of that list, one you have never set foot in before, and go find out who the mad awesome people who inhabit it are. Go join a game of mafia, find out what exactly overclocking is about, go read a girl blog and comment on it.
We need to stop living in our little holes and go meet the rest of Team Liquid, because at the end of the day we are all passionate people who share some interests.
That is all. I love you all. GMarshal.

well said. wandering into health and fitness(like 2 days before it became a subforum) has had a pretty big effect on my life. TL too good.

TL Maplestory is awesome. Well, used to be awesome... we're pretty inactive now, but it doesn't change the fact that we are an awesome bunch!
Oh, and also, grats on 4k. =)
*edit: yay now we're in!
|
Yeah, you're right I don't know any of those guys. But then I still don't know what Mafia is so....
Actually the new thread portal is an awesome way to get into different kinds of threads, it's how I ended up at your blog just now: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/new.php
The only problem I see with your idea, is everyone already knows you G. After all, you are the creator of one of the most epic and amazing threads on TL. Yes, that one.

Congrats on 4k. ^_^
TL Ponies, here I come.
|
Gz on your 4k post! I find the LoL sub-community here to be really awesome, don't know anyone in particular, but there is always great discussion going on.Gl hf with exploring!

I'm sad that I'll never meet all the residents of Butte, Montana.
|
You know, I saw the title and I got really excited about actually traveling around the world and visiting Team Liquiders, and then I read your post and got even more excited! I completely agree with you, each subsection does have its own regular posters and it is pretty cool seeing all these personalities coming together. TL is truly a wonderful place full of fantastic people, and I am going to take your advice. Maybe I'll find somewhere where I fit in and can contribute. That will make me happy! Thanks GMarshal my pony friend, thank you for this post!

Dunno bout you, but if you don't play the games listed above, it'd be kinda awkward running into a specific game community thread/section.

Much <3 GMarshal :D

I disagree. I spend TONS of time reading the EVE thread. I don't play at all but I enjoy reading about their exploits. I don't actually post a lot (pretty much never), but I still enjoy living vicariously off their adventures.

I guess a lot of people will not be happy if you forget Liquipedia. And by that I mean go the irc channel, and contribute with all the guys over there.

Awesome idea, hopefully this blog gets spotlighted!

I also thought it meant an actual exchange program at first :D
Are you going to do a blog series after every 2weeks to describe the community you were in, and the people you met? It would be cool if you could at least in some form document your travel through the forums ^_^
|
Stop by the running or triathlon thread in health and fitness. If you do maybe I'll play another game of Mafia sometime.

Congrats on 4k :3 You'll soon find the beauty of various gaming communities within TL. I heavily enjoy the ones I participate in!

I'm with roffles if you're going to be active in the thread/forum for a game you're going to have to play the game with the TL'ers. Such a different experience than just reading the thread(s). That said you can still get a decent idea of who knows what's up in there. I dunno. If you have the time try playing the game for a few days/week with the TL crew. I've done it multiple times and I have awesome memories from them. (Hi MS kids/BF:Heroes =])

Great post GMarshal. I think this is something that every regular on TL could find benefit in. From Hot_Bid down to the most lurky lurker. I guess I should find a new subforum to lurk in

You forgot Korean Music Discussion. Once you enter, you won't be able to get out.
|
I think you also forgot the Nada's Body community.
Grats on 4k

Visit the Korean Music Discussion Thread and be prepared for awesomeness!
Team Liquid Anime Discussion Thread is pretty cool too. n_n

I am the awesomest person you can meet no doubt. One can only find me in mirc or in the Skyrim thread talking bout how I exploit the nude mod. Well not really I pretty much spam everywhere but I am very awesome nevertheless. GL finding me.

Grats on 4k! I even got a mention. =o
I pretty much just live in the LoL Subforum now and appear in the ADT. ^^ I once inhabited the SC2 Tournament Threads too but eventually I just just felt it wasn't for me. BW is quiet for now but I always come out for SKT. (SKT HWAITING!) Thought about Mafia Subforum, but I can't afford to have more of my time disappear haha. And sometimes I just don't post in other places because I don't feel I have anything meaningful to contribute. =(

Maybe you could update this post with stories of interesting people you know now and then chronicle your journey telling tales of the new people you meet
|
The team liquid anime discussion thread has around 30 people in IRC constantly. And our thread is pretty active.
|
rofl nada's body gets its very own subcommunity
|
The only issue I take is that Nada's body is it's own subcommunity. Nada's body is universal.
edit- also looking forward to seeing you in KMD

Nada's body is not much of a subcommunity rather then a place where we post pics of (BW) progamers.

Awesome blog. This is a pretty sweet idea. Maybe I'll actually go and try to join in on some Mafia for once, instead of being intimidated as hell by it.

It depends. I spend almost all my time on TL exclusively in the BW forums, but I've never played a game of BW before in my life. Meanwhile, I play mostly SC2, but I barely ever go to the SC2 forums. Playing a game and posting in related threads don't always have to go together.

You should start your #liquipedia initiation this weekend during Providence. Nothing quite like the live result updates for an MLG.
Related to that you could also consider #teamliquid to be a subcommunity with regulars. Although avoid during major events, it's just crazy.
|
Great idea for a way to get to know people, will be popping around a few of those places to say hi

very cool! would like to see regular posts introducing interesting personalities you meet along the way, why dont you start with those mafia guys you fancy so much? will read

Really cool idea, grats on getting spotlighted and on the 4k. I usually hang mainly only around the pony thread, but I might just take your advice and explore the rest of TL's subcommunities now.

This is something I need to do more, to much lurking in the sc2 and general forms. Sometimes it gets depressing lolol, but anyway nice post. Thanks for sharing <3

Cool idea, although you'll need more than 2 weeks for EVE (trial period for the game is 3 weeks, and that's almost never enough to learn about it). There's also the Skyrim thread, and don't forget every other game specific thread, and the SFW Pictures Thread.

This is a really cool idea. I didn't even know that such sub-groups existed. I just sort of lurk in every thread that catches my attention.

I think to really count as a sub-group they have to stand the test of (gaming-relative) time- where communities like KMD, HoN/Dota, Mafia, etc. obviously aren't going anywhere.

There are always the bad here in TL, but there is a lot more good =). I'm very glad that my friend has introduced me to this site. It's like finally finding a place on the internet where you can connect with people have good, intelligent, reasonable discussions with.
The sub communities in TL are really quite something. I remember when I first stepped foot into the Tech support forum and got a good licking from JingleHell, but hey he really knew his stuff. Him and along other tech gurus really are valuable resources in our community.
The Health and Fitness forum is the first time anything on the internet has actually physically effected me in a positive way (because playing games all day can be unhealthy!).

Cause of hype, once games have been out for awhile the threads go away. I also think that it's not much of a sub community and more of a popular thread, none of the guys there are recognizable/have personalities within that thread, it's just people who have the game talking about it or asking for help.
|
There's also a Touhou thread. Lots of cool people there.
|
Awesome idea GMarshal! Maybe I'll try this......To the Nada's body thread!
|
The gay Starcraft players thread has a ton of great and friendly folks, you should pay a visit sometime!
|
I can vouch for this already.
I was reading TL since 07 or so, but I've always been pretty quiet so I never signed up for an account till I found out about TL Mafia. I've never looked back since. I've gotten to know some truly amazing people, some of which I've since met, and other which are still only known to me by name. I started out in TL Mafia, and stayed there almost exclusively. (I believe chill put it at 96.5%). The first (and so far only) time I've ventured from TL was to look at TL Ponies. Skepticism flew out the window after a week of reading/watching the community there.
It seems to me that sub-communities form around exactly the kind of people that I would want to get to know. I talk to people from TL Mafia outside of TL Mafia more than I do in it now, and I'll bet that with time TL Ponies will be the same.
|
When I read the title I thought TL was going to be stealing some Koreans from playxp or something.
I've always flirted with trying a game of forum mafia out but never done it. I think I'll do that soon.
|
Look forward to meeting you
|
Well im going to start with Nada's Body i guess. Then to maplestory and if i get bored of that, the ponys should suffice.

When/if you decide to check the Anime Discussion thread, the subcommunity for that is most active on our IRC channel. #tladt on Rizon. Probably the best way to get to know the regulars there.
|
Are there really gay people who play Starcraft?
I was always under the impression they had other stuff to do, pretty cool, not hating or anything, just never thought about it.

May I suggest a visit to the IdrA fan club thread? That has a pretty dedicated community in my experience.

So... anyone else do artistic stuff related to StarCraft? I feel like throwing out the word "Fanfiction" totally... sullies the idea of writing legit short stories set in the universe, but anyone do anything like that? I know I have an odd penchant for writing SC related poetry, and I would love to meet other people who are interested in poetic leanings, writing, and, well, several other things that are absolutely opposite from that (martial arts, anyone?).
I support this endeavor, but I have a difficult time going up to anyone else in real life... and yes the internet is anonymous but it still causes trepidation for some reason.
