Note: This OP has been updated by Aeres.

Welcome to Touhou, one of the most popular Internet phenomena from Japan!  This “danmaku”, or bullet-hell, series holds an incredibly broad fanbase who identify with the huge cast of characters, the series’ creator (known as ZUN), the music from the games, or just the thrill of blasting enemies while dodging up to hundreds of bullets at once.

This thread is meant to discuss EVERYTHING about or pertaining to the Touhou series.  This includes the story for the games and manga, questions about the games, doujin, fanmade music, established music circles, artwork, YouTube videos, requests for playing against other people, and anything else you might think of.  The same sort of rules from the Anime Discussion Thread apply here, in that Touhou discussion on TeamLiquid should be restricted to this thread.  Of course, nothing NSFW is permitted, so stay PG-13!

A list of all official Touhou games is as follows:

+ Show Spoiler [Highly Responsive to Prayers] +
[image loading]

TH01  東方靈異伝   - Highly Responsive to Prayers (HRtP): The first game in the Touhou series, and the only game to not feature the distinctive Touhou “danmaku” style.  This game instead revolves around using Reimu Hakurei, the main heroine of the series, to defeat enemies by deflecting the magical Yin-Yang Orb at them, while dodging both enemy attacks and the flying Orb itself!

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Highly_Responsive_to_Prayers

+ Show Spoiler [Story of Eastern Wonderland] +
[image loading]

TH02 東方封魔録 - Story of Eastern Wonderland (SoEW): The second game in the Touhou series, this game introduces the now-familar shooter element, as well as the second main heroine of the series, Marisa Kirisame.  Players must control Reimu (armed with one of three different attack types and some bombs) and advance through several stages, shooting down enemies that hamper her progress, collecting power-ups, and defeating the boss at the end of each stage.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Story_of_Eastern_Wonderland

+ Show Spoiler [Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream] +
[image loading]

TH03 東方夢時空 - Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream (PoDD): The third game in the Touhou series, as well as the first to incorporate the "Phantasmagoria" element of gameplay, in which two human players indirectly battle one another by separately navigating their own danmaku screens, releasing magical Spell Cards at each other in an effort to knock out the opponent before being defeated themselves.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Phantasmagoria_of_Dim.Dream

+ Show Spoiler [Lotus Land Story] +
[image loading]

TH04 東方幻想郷 - Lotus Land Story (LLS): The fourth game in the Touhou series, this game returns to the classic danmaku style that Story of Eastern Wonderland used, as well as introducing many of the gameplay elements that are now standard in the series, such as bombs that collect items upon use, a "graze counter" that tallies the number of bullets that nearly hit the player's hitbox, and a revamped scoring system.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Lotus_Land_Story

+ Show Spoiler [Mystic Square] +
[image loading]

TH05 東方怪綺談 - Mystic Square (MS): The fifth game in the Touhou series, and the last of the PC-98 games.  Mystic Square's gameplay is most similar to the Windows games that most are familiar with, and is notable for further refining the scoring system, as well as being the first game to punish the player for using bombs.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Mystic_Square

+ Show Spoiler [The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil] +
[image loading]

TH06 東方紅魔郷 - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil (EoSD): The sixth game in the Touhou series, the first of the Windows games, and perhaps the most recognized Touhou game of all.  Considered one of the more difficult Windows games due to the lack of a visible hitbox and sheer bullet density, Embodiment of Scarlet Devil introduces a method of collecting items automatically (by moving to the top of the screen while at full power), the counter-bomb system (allowing players to avoid a fatal hit by bombing immediately), and many of the series' most recognizable characters.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Embodiment_of_Scarlet_Devil

+ Show Spoiler [Perfect Cherry Blossom] +
[image loading]

TH07 東方妖々夢 - Perfect Cherry Blossom (PCB): The seventh game in the Touhou series, this introduces the unique "Cherry Point" score system, in which the player's Cherry Gauge is filled by shooting enemies; the higher the Gauge is, the higher one's score goes from point drops, and reaching a certain amount of Cherry Points grants a temporary shield.  Two mainstays of the series are also introduced: the player's visible hitbox, and a cursor at the bottom of the screen that indicates the position of the stage's boss.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Perfect_Cherry_Blossom

+ Show Spoiler [Immaterial and Missing Power] +
[image loading]

TH07.5 東方萃夢想 - Immaterial and Missing Power (IaMP): The first spinoff game of the Touhou series, and also the first of the games to follow the "fighter" format.  Instead of the traditional danmaku style, players now control their characters in a fixed-screen arena against their opponent (whether AI or human) in a contest of reflexes and strategy to deplete the opponent's health bar before the foe does the same to them.  Unlike most fighting games, Immaterial and Missing Power places a heavy focus on projectile combat.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Immaterial_and_Missing_Power

+ Show Spoiler [Imperishable Night] +
[image loading]

TH08 東方永夜抄 - Imperishable Night (IN): The eighth game in the Touhou series, and perhaps the easiest of the Windows games.  Unique to the game is the concept of dual character use: each character selection gives control of a human and a youkai, and the player can switch between characters for different attacks.  Also new to the series is the "Time Orb" system that affects the story and score, as well as the "Last Spell" mechanic for bosses; Last Spells are very difficult Spell Cards that are not required to be cleared to defeat the boss, but reward the player with enormous point values if cleared.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Imperishable_Night

+ Show Spoiler [Phantasmagoria of Flower View] +
[image loading]

TH09 東方花映塚 - Phantasmagoria of Flower View (PoFV): The ninth game in the Touhou series, and the second to incorporate the "Phantasmagoria" element of gameplay seen in Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream.  Boasting the widest playable cast of any official game, players again go head-to-head against their AI or human opponent in separate danmaku alleys, fighting to stay alive the longest.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Phantasmagoria_of_Flower_View

+ Show Spoiler [Shoot the Bullet] +
[image loading]

TH09.5 東方文花帖 - Shoot the Bullet (StB): The second spinoff game in the Touhou series, and the first of the "danmaku photography" games.  Players control the tengu newspaper reporter Aya Shameimaru, but instead of defeating enemies to advance to the next stage, the player must maneuver Aya close to various Touhou bosses in order to obtain a photograph of the boss.  Gameplay revolves around mobility and dexterity, rather than sheer power and defeating enemies.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Shoot_the_Bullet

+ Show Spoiler [Mountain of Faith] +
[image loading]

TH10 東方風神録 - Mountain of Faith (MoF): The tenth game in the Touhou series, this brings about the Faith Meter mechanic; the Faith Gauge of the player is filled by defeating enemies or collecting point items, and decreases when not doing so.  The Gauge is also accompanied by a numerical Faith Value, which determines the points obtained from point items and Spell Card bonuses, and can be increased by collecting either point items or specialized Faith items.  The player has no set amount of bombs; instead, bombs are usable depending on the status of the Faith Gauge.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Mountain_of_Faith

+ Show Spoiler [Scarlet Weather Rhapsody] +
[image loading]

TH10.5 東方緋想天 - Scarlet Weather Rhapsody (SWR): The third spinoff game in the Touhou series, and the second fighting game that matches the style of Immaterial and Missing Power.  While the basic mechanics remain the same, the battle system is drastically altered by the implementation of a weather system, an increased deck of Spell Cards for each player, and the ability to fly.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Scarlet_Weather_Rhapsody

+ Show Spoiler [Subterranean Animism] +
[image loading]

TH11 東方地霊殿 - Subterranean Animism (SA): The eleventh game in the Touhou series, this game includes a multi-character system somewhat similar to Imperishable Night; rather than controlling two characters with different shot types, the player controls one of four characters with three different attack types.  Each attack type is granted to the character by a supporting youkai, thereby allowing the use of specific powers, such as high speed movement or being able to wrap around the screen to the other side.  The point system is based on grazing, encouraging the player to graze at every possible opportunity.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Subterranean_Animism

+ Show Spoiler [Undefined Fantastic Object] +
[image loading]

TH12 東方星蓮船 - Undefined Fantastic Object (UFO): The twelfth game in the Touhou series, and arguably the most difficult to date.  The game focuses around colored UFOs floating around the screen; destroying them in certain orders of color allows for the acquisition of extra bombs and lives.  The player is obligated to time the destruction of UFOs to maximize the points and powerups received.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Undefined_Fantastic_Object

+ Show Spoiler [Touhou Hisoutensoku] +
[image loading]

TH12.3 東方非想天則 超弩級ギニョルの謎を追え - Lacking Perception of the Natural Laws of the East or Lacking Perception of the Rule of Heaven in the East (Referred to as Hisoutensoku): The fourth spinoff game in the Touhou series, the third fighting game, and also the game with the longest title.  The gameplay retains many elements from Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, but introduces more characters, spell cards, weather effects, and the like.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Hisoutensoku

+ Show Spoiler [Double Spoiler] +
[image loading]

TH12.5  ダブルスポイラ  - Double Spoiler (DS): The fifth spinoff game in the Touhou series, and the second to utilize the "photography" element present in Shoot the Bullet.  Players control Aya and a new character, Hatate Himekaidou, in order to take pictures of various Touhou series bosses.  Points are awarded depending on a variety of factors, including the addition of Aya or Hatate in the picture, certain bullet patterns from the bosses, and grazing bullets.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Double_Spoiler

+ Show Spoiler [Fairy Wars] +
[image loading]

TH12.8  妖精大戦争  - Great Fairy Wars (GFW): The sixth spinoff game in the Touhou series, this game is a continuation of the plot from the Touhou manga series "Strange and Bright Nature Deity", and is the only danmaku game whose artwork was not done by ZUN.  The player controls Cirno in one of seven "routes" of three stages through the game; depending on the route taken, the final boss must be handled differently.  The game also allows for the use of a "freezing" technique that permits the player to freeze bullets in Cirno's path; large chains of frozen bullets award points and bombs, but certain fire bullets will not be frozen, so it cannot be relied on all the time.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Fairy_Wars

+ Show Spoiler [Ten Desires] +
[image loading]

TH13  東方神霊廟   - Ten Desires (TD): The thirteenth game in the Touhou series.  The difficulty level has been lessened from that of prior installments in the Touhou series, in order to suit a wider audience.  New mechanics in Ten Desires include the implementation of Divine Spirits (collectable objects that function similarly to the UFOs in Undefined Fantastic Object), as well as the Trance Gauge.  Players begin the game with a single flame of the three Trance Gauge flames filled, and can activate Trance upon either sustaining a lethal hit while a flame is lit, or by manually activating it when three flames are collected.  While under the effects of Trance, player shots deal more damage, gain increased benefits from Divine Spirits, and acquire invulnerability until Trance ends.  Ten Desires also marks the return of the Spell Practice mode, only seen before in Imperishable Night.

A list of all unofficial Touhou games would take up too much space, so I'll just leave it at that.

I 1 CC'd Lunatic after about 3 days of playing to get used to the lasers. I always sucked at lasers so the curved ones give me loads of issues.

UFO quite literally THROWS lives at you though... You can average 3-4 lives per stage if you really want to so it's pretty stupidly easy to 1 CC.

I'm curious in hearing what characters the Touhou fans of tl use (or the ones they like the most)
As for me, I use Laser beam Marisa pretty much all the time. I'm pretty fond of all the characters in EoSD (specially Sakuya and Remilia) Alice is pretty sweet as well (teehee)
For OST's I frikin love a whole bunch like Remilia's theme, Alice's, Meiling's boss fight in EoSD, second level of EoSD (actually i cant say i don't like a song on EoSD) all the songs on Mountain of Fate and Subterranean Animism are great. So far im really enjoying the ones on UFO...
oh yeah pretty interested in hearing how u guys found out/ heard about Touhou :D

I think this really fits better in the sports and games section rather than general, can't even justify it by the amount of people following it.

I don't remember how I found out about Touhou, but it started something terrible, almost wish I could undo it...except I'd be missing out on all these awesome stuff. Can't decide > <

In terms of character I use, I pretty much use Reimu first and always, that's really just a result of how much I like the concept of a moneygrabbing pauper miko, but still!

I love Touhou so much :D. Anyways I'm having trouble with UFO also.. so can't help you! In time though I will beat lunatic! No Touhou will ever go unbeaten.

I found out about Touhou from searching long and hard for more bullet hell games. As far as my character goes, I usually stick with Marisa when other characters aren't available. I enjoyed Sakuya in PCB.

Anyone see this?

It looks interesting enough, not as intense and awesome as Touhou though.

To be honest, Shoot the Bullet is my favorite. (IaMP is okay too.) There's plenty of other bullet hell games out there probably worth playing much more, so the X.5's that deviate from the dime-a-dozen formula to me are more interesting. StB is the only shmup of sorts that I know where you are forced to be more aggressive (i.e. move closer towards the boss) to deal any damage at all, rather than. Sure beats turtling around the bottom of the screen all the time. There's also the concept of shooting for defense as opposed to dealing damage, which almost adds some puzzle game elements to the mix, considering how you have to plan out your shots with the upcoming patterns to eventually get in some damage. Also, scoring just seems a lot more intuitive. But then again, I'm not a huge shmup fan.

I couldn't figure out what to do with StB when I started. 5 tries later, I gave up and looked it up ^_^

And in the later games, you'll find that Reimu starts to look more attractive than the other characters, to the point that the ONLY good character in SA is ReimuA.

And SanaeB breaks UFO on many, many levels.

If you don't know what Touhou is, you too can start legally playing a little bit right now. Each of the main games has a free demo ZUN's (Touhou creator's) site. Demo contains the first 3 levels of the game, which is normally 6 levels + 1 or 2 bonus levels.

The first couple of games:

----------

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Demo

English translation patch

The most memorable cast and classic music, but graphically more primitive and you can't see your hitbox when you focus. Still awesome. This is the only demo compatible with replay files from the full game, so try downloading some of the world record replays.

----------

Perfect Cherry Blossom Demo

English translation patch

Adds the ability to see your hitbox on focus, a new "cherry point" scoring mechanic, and features boss shot patterns that generally look cooler than its predecessor.

----------

The .lzh files can be unzipped with 7-zip or probably any other unzipping program.

Controls:
+ Show Spoiler +
Arrow keys - move
Z - shoot (generally want to hold down all the time if you are new)
X - bomb (screen-clear, limited supply)
shift - focus (movement slows and shot becomes narrow)

To get the other demos, navigate the Touhou official website in Google translator and look for links containing "[gamename]dl" or things that say "Trial" with a version number less than 1. The other demos are mostly NOT lzh files. There are no English patches for the demo versions of other games. If you keep dying, try Imperishable Night since you have a longer window of time to save yourself with a bomb after you die in that game.

If you decide you want to legally buy the full version of any of the games, consult Touhou Wiki.

Yay finally a touhou discussion thread.

Concerning characters, I pretty much play everything.
MarisaA is my favourite in EoSD, Reimu/Yukari in IN, ReimuA in SA.
Except those, I don't really have a preference for any of the characters, even though I love Marisa.

Concerning the games, my favourite is probably IN.
Everything in this game is amazing.
Characters, levels, spellcards, music, mechanics ...
I just love that game.

It's just straight practice man.

You'll seem to hit a wall when you try to advance to hard (at least I did) but just keep practicing and dodging because that much more intuitive.

It took me a long while to progress to Hard from normal because Hard is the first difficultly level where you truly can't just hug the bottom of the screen. Personally I just bombed the shit out of all the hard levels in the later Touhou's so that I could just use practice mode with 10 lives to practice dodging.

Eventually you'll start beating the levels only dying once or so. Go back to normal and own it so you can see the progress you made.

I personally avoid Reimu though because while her hitbox is smaller it kinda... well handicaps you if you want to play other characters because that 1 pixel difference is actually quite huge

I personally find Hard harder than normal because of all the extra spell cards that get thrown at you. One of the more painful spell cards I found was the addition of Mystical Flower Vine to Meiling's arsenal. Damn that card is hard

UFO throws everything at you . It's probably to make up for the insane difficulty later on though. Stages 1-3 are a breeze, Stage 4 it starts to get hard... Stages 5 and 6 are eeevilll.

Jayme: You 1cced UFO Lunatic? Congrats dude, there's only like 5 players who've done it so far

And yeah, it's straight practice to memorize the stages and then it's pure dodging the bullets from there D:
It is impossible to be a citizen if you don't make an effort to understand the most basic activities of your government. It is very difficult to thrive in an increasingly competitive world if you're a nation of doods.

So has anyone here 1cced UFO Hard/Lunatic yet? Syou is still killing me like no tomorrow T_T.

I 1 CC'd Lunatic after about 3 days of playing to get used to the lasers. I always sucked at lasers so the curved ones give me loads of issues.

UFO quite literally THROWS lives at you though... You can average 3-4 lives per stage if you really want to so it's pretty stupidly easy to 1 CC.

haven't got past stage 4 and beyond (still playing normal mode) but damn too much projectiles to get the star from thoses darn UFO's! Any advice? Playing 12.3 Btw!

I find this plain unlikely honestly.

Either people just haven't been telling the entire online community ( I find this pretty freaking likely) or something because I'm not even that good at all. I don't frequent the Touhou community boards because I don't go for world records and all. I just found UFO threw a billion lives at you.

There are plenty of players just on Youtube that shit all over my skills like it's nothing.
Python is garbage, number 1 advocate of getting rid of it.
