This game has two sides. The side that is watching the pros play, and the other side that is playing yourself. Watching the pros play has been fun, but playing myself could not have been more unenjoyable.
First off, when I set out to play this game seriously, I wanted to make it big, not just shit out in a lower league. I can't just play games for the fun of it, there has to be a driving force that motivates me. This world that we all live in sucks, and if you can find more of a reason to live then not to, then you should do what gives you that reason. Starcraft has been the focal point of my life for the past 9 or 10 months.
I had a plan set in my head, obviously it didn't work out but, I wanted to get out of high school, go to college (which I'm a freshman in now), and throughout those 4 years, hopefully get good enough to become a pro. Throughout my 9 - 10 months of playing seriously, I have gone from bronze to diamond. Not the best, but at the same time not the worst. Once I was in Platinum league the game lost its "fun." I started focusing as hard as I could on improving, and only worried about how I would get to the pro level play. Diamond league was my goal, but my dreams was pro.
So now I've achieved my goal, and there is no satisfaction in it. 8/10 games I get cheesed (I'm a zerg player) or all-inned. Nobody bothers to play a macro game and it feels like I may as well be back in Gold league all over again. This game is fun to watch, and it's extremely hard to pull away from after it being part of my life for so long. But this game is like poison. I can honestly say that I regret finding out about it. All it has done now is bring me disappointment in my own skills, some of the game design, and other people. How can someone expect to become great when all they have to focus on is holding cheese or all-ins game after game after game?
This is not the way the game is meant to be played. Look at Brood War, the games are entertaining because it's not like this year one sc2 bullshit with all these crappy gimmicky strategies. People play the long game because the game is static. Maybe one day I'll decide to play this game seriously again when it's done being patched like BW, but this shit isn't for me anymore and it's far too stressful to even consider enjoying. The closest thing I got to satisfaction was beating the campaign this week, which is pathetic.
Yes, this is a rant post. If you don't like it, too bad. It's my blog. Please refrain from retarded comments so I don't have to waste more of my life reading them.

find a team or something to practice with. or find people at your school to play with. if you're at a somewhat big school, most likely there are other diamond/masters players there

yeah its kinda hard to find a team in diamond though, also i go to a pretty small college and i only know a handful of people that have tried sc2

I feel your pain. When I first started playing this game, I never thought there would be this amount of cheese and all-in. I don't mean to whine about imbalance, but unless you are playing Terran, you have to scout everywhere to make sure you don't lose to some cheese, and even then, a strong all-in can kill you easily. I decided to quit playing the game to get better, and instead just play for the fun of it. It have helped a lot, but at the same time, I hardly play the game anymore. I still watch the tournaments though

Yeah I'm in the like same exact situation lol

you look like a tryhard, just play the game and get good as you play.
If you really wanna go pro, don't rely on ladder lol

kind of have to climb up the ladder to be considered a pro lol
and yes im a tryhard lol

Come to BW. There isn't as much cheese as in SC2, and even losing is somehow satisfying. Sounds like paradise, hmm?
But it's harrrrrrdddd and you will sweat (mostly at your armpit).

Stop playing and only watch SC2. That's what I did, I couldn't seperate my 'must win' from having fun so I just quit playing.

In case you dont wanna switch or anything (not like u have to get good to enjoy the game, playing at D is enjoyable as well and then you make your way up through D+ and C-)
I know the frustration of being all inned though, I remember being 3 hatch ling all in'd effin 4 times in a row cus I blew at scouting.. But it doesn't happen no where near as often as you describe it, give it a try.

"I can't improve because my opponents won't cooperate" is such a bad attitude. That is the real reason why you'll never become pro, not getting cheesed.
|
when you get to masters you experience a lot less cheesing, you just have to push through it.
That being said, cheese is a very valid part of the game. This game isn't "macrocraft", it's a strategy game. Do some safer anti-cheese builds, and then regain your economic advantage through playing smarter/better. Starting a little behind isn't that big of a challenge.
You have to keep in mind that except for a few extremely talented individuals, it takes a lot of time to 'get good'. Jinro, Idra, Tyler, Ret, all these players had to play for YEARS before they were good. You've played a mere 10 months?
I played somewhere between 60,000-80,000 games of BW. It's going to be pretty easy for me to hit SC2 running than it is for you to discover the basics of RTS games, master them, and then apply them. The same can be said for (most) top players.
One thing that stands out though is attitude. I find it easy to grind through ladder because I love to learn. I love being cheesed. I love macro games. I love practicing mechanics. In almost all losses I come out of the game having learned something, and being aware of what I learned is really empowering - that my opponents' wins are in my control, not theirs.
Good luck with whatever route you decide to take.

This x1,000,000.
It may be tough to swallow, but being able to defend all the cheeses and allins is quite an important part of the game and is a hugely important part of being a pro.
|
if you're on ladder just play with a cheese-proof mindset. if you are confident that you can beat anyone in a macro game then why not sacrifice some of that to play a more cheese proof game?
there are always going to be cheesers. you can either get frustrated or practice against cheese.
sorry to say this but 95% of the sc2 community believe they are entitled to a macro game .they believe that every game should be a macro game and that's how the game is going to be played 100% at pro levels where it matters yada yada you can't get better with cheese people who cheese suck etc. that's so naive.
first of all i played at your level and i've been cheesed something like 2/10 games. if i wasn't cheesed i was all inned about 40% of my other games. that's pretty damn good. you're exaggerating so much.
sorry you aren't having fun. the game isn't the reason you're not having fun, you're not letting yourself have fun. go 6pool a bitch once a while, take a chill pill. if you hold cheese game after game after game and get to masters then you're bound to have more macro games.
|
Looks like you need to start learning to defend cheeses and you will be a pro!!!!!!
|
Spend some time learning how to defend cheese. Pros get cheesed all the time on big stages in front of huge audiences. If you can't handle the pressure of laddering vs a cheese then how are you going to handle it later?
|
If you're getting cheesed, you're playing too greedy. It's as simple as that. They're army cheesing, you're economy cheesing.
