I have no idea why i only just stumbled upon this.

I have a friend that is new to dota so i am posting on his behalf I tried to get him to play against AI in DotA 1 and it was pretty hilarious to watch I'd love to get him into DotA2 so he can get a good start in this genre

Go go newbies!

So many DotA guides on TL :D.. makes me want to write one. haha

All 5 of your tips are good. For a beginner DotA player, its always important to be active or if not at least look active. Spam your spells on the enemy, last hit and deny creeps, ask your teammates if they want you to gank their lane, ALWAYS be involved in clashes. Once your teammates warm up to you and see that you are going out of your way to ask what you need to do, they will give you advice on what to do and not do in crucial points of the game.

Oh yeah, and last tip. Always bring a town portal.
I know where my towel is.

I'd like to try DotA2, and have never played DotA. I am an avid League of Legends player however.

Unless it's first blood or pre-3 minutes, it is not worth sacrificing yourself for the kill, you rather send an enemy back to fountain or force a salve.

- Check your opponents mana constantly. There are times you might be facing a WW/Blink hero and you dont want to engage because he will just blink/ww away, but he may have no mana which opens up an opportunity window, similarly applies to stunners. This leads on to...

- Keep a tag on your opponents skill cooldowns, situation where your enemy (eg: crystal maiden) uses frostbite, this gives you approx 8.5 seconds without the fear of being disabled. Obviously you keep a rough count the cooldowns of big ultimates (eg: ravage, overgrowth), but I've gone down to the level of if a Weaver popped out of shukuchi 1 or 2 seconds faster than they should of.

- Sometimes you get a feeling that your opponent suddenly became more confident (start approaching you), most likely a gank is coming your way.

I started playing dota a couple months ago so I'd be ready for dota2 ^^

I've streamed every game of dota I've ever played. The audience effect kept me motivated to play through the brutal learning phase and learn hero/item builds. The people love me. ;p It definitely helped me become a better player faster, and I'm now at the level where I can teach anyone pretty much anything about the game

Are you doing jungle furion? Sidelane furion is counterproductive to the hero, middle is a lot of responsibility for a new player, and jungle isolates you and keeps you from learning important mechanics. Furion truly is a bad choice for learning dota. :p

Well I'd like a key for to put on my spare account so my brother and cousin can play, they would be considered noobs in the grand scheme of the competitive scene, but I'll leave the decision up to you.

The day I learned about the small things like never auto attacking but once per enemy creepy and to try to get two hits on your own creep (once at 50%, once to deny) the world just changes lol, the creep push because really important. Also if working in the long lane, pulling or double pulling creep waves is a great way to 1) set up potential ganks on enemy heroes that push too far and 2) get a bit of experience and gold farm for yourself while a carry role can get solo exp.

There are a lot more small things such as ward placement (Don't just throw it up on the cliff by rune, worst place to put it in my opinion, there are always better places, especially for the Radiant side.)

It's really tough to choose a winner. I should've come up with some creative contest for it, too many deserving people this way. T_T

To make me feel less guilty, I made a list of all the candidates, and RNG'd winner. And that winner is....
Gurrgeh!

Congrats to him! Hopefully he becomes pro at DotA so I can take the credit!

Hi, I got into Dota just as the hype-up for The International started since then ive been playing the dota copy mod Storm of the Imperial Sanctum on sc2 and like the feel and the type of gameplay and the community of flaming and raging, laughing and joking all in good fun. (its not that i dont like the sotis community its just after playing it for a few weeks i feel that Dota2 is calling me home to the mothership so to speak :D). And since then ive been trying to read up more on dota 1 to be prepared for dota2, i feel now as i been reading some guides (including yours ofc) that id very much like to get actual game experience and would therefore appriciate a beta-key greatly

great guide, nice and easy, keep it up!

edit: great tips from the rest of the crowd who keeps handing them out like halloweend candy, cheers.

Thanks tree.hugger for the beta key! I had a chance to install it last night and die to some bots. I took a look at the guide to antimage and played him for a few games to try and put some of the build/item suggestions to use and it was good fun. I felt like he was perhaps a little hard as a starting character because he needs to be last hitting like a boss but his blink was a very welcome button for helping me to not die.

After a few games I was able to farm up quite well and become a proper hard-carry and start slaughtering the enemy. I often found myself standing at a shop to buy something only to have it go into a stash somewhere else.. and certainly my courier usage was more counter-productive than helpful.. but I was very much learning. Not quite sure how ready I am to step into games with people but i'll give it a go sometime very soon.

actually it is ok to die in the early stages of the game sometimes.

Because the time wasted running back to heal and stuff and then getting back to battle is much longer than the respawn time. Ie, the exp/gold gain of the enemy hero(es) is lesser than your exp/gold loss from not being in the lane for X amount of time. This is really situational though and you should usually have healing items to prevent these situations.
A man is what he thinks about all day long.
