Hello my fellow TL'ers! Today I want to share with you some random thoughts I had a couple days ago. I caught myself trying to use the snipe ability on ghosts (Which is a horrible thing to attempt if you have the mouse accuracy of a naked crackhead) just for the sake of the sound it makes. I absolutely love it.
As some of you may have noticed it is the standard sound a silenced pistol makes in like every movie/show ever made ever. However, that's not the reason why I like it so much, I started thinking and then I remembered my childhood Command & Conquer experiences.
The commando, oh yes, my favorite unit in the first Command & Conquer game. He would make a remark after killing a unit, even so that he wouldn't be able to fire another shot until he was done making the remark. That was the first time I heard that sound. I still specifically recall mission hmm, 6 I believe of the GDI (The side that had the commando) where you had, well, just a commando and was supposed to blow up a specific building. (Of which you had no idea which, because I recall the briefing cinematic to be "scrambled" ofcourse leaving out info like what building) I remember finding that mission hard as hell.
I just looked up a speedrun of that mission.
That song too, goddamn C&C was awesome. I would swear to God you were supposed to blow up the Construction Yard, but apparently destroying the airfield also allows you to complete the mission.
The comments even said that destroying the airfield allows you skip the next mission :O
I was like 6 years old when I first layed hands on this game, and now I am 22, and only just found this out, even though as far as I always knew there were never any cheats in this game, no possibilities to skip levels or anything like that.
Basically the mission objective video for this mission was purposefully full of static so you don't know what you're actually supposed to blow up (the airfield). Technically you can blow up anything inside the Nod base, even a power plant, and that would end the mission. If you didn't blow up the airfield, however, the next mission basically tells you to take it out.
Hence taking out the airfield skips the next mission.

That's amazing man.
I would always blow up the Construction Yard, because that was the building I probably tried first then.
I do recall the NOD base in mission 7 does look similar to the NOD base in mission 6, I guess that is the reason why then.
I thought it was full of static just to make it harder to complete the mission, as in requiring several tries before actually finishing the mission. I never connected the dots with the airfield, thinking they were 2 seperate missions. (I don't think I had ever noticed a connection between what the 2 bases look like in mission 6 & 7, mainly because I would blow up the Construction Yard and had never seen the north side of the base)
Man, I never really made it through the original C&C1 campaign. I always got stuck on that one mission where you were supposed to kill off the Nod bases in addition to defending a random village. Apparently, that mission was on a timer, which does not suit my turtling style very well.
Anyways, Red Alert 1 will forever be my original C&C, as I first played that game in first grade, though I had no clue what I was doing back then lol.
If I recall correctly that was 1 of the earlier missions, I believe there were like 3 different variants of that 1 , I recall being stuck a few times in the original C&C, but I don't think I had ever been as stuck as I was in mission 5 of the allies of RA1, rescueing Tanya (I thought the cinematics with that mission were a absolutely epic) as I used to play with my dad, he couldn't get past that mission either, until 1 day I recall waking up and my dad told me he had beaten the mission... Using a hex editor xDD.
It took us ages to figure out you can capture buildings with engineers in RA1 as well, just that they had to be severely damaged first.
I have a lot of good memories from RA1 as well, though I never liked it as much as the original C&C.

Yeah I remember that mission as well, I never beat that mission. Some of the mission choices are a lot harder than other ones, and there are a few very tricky missions that require a lot of retries to boot. Like that later Nod mission where you had to destroy 2 mammoth tanks with 2 light tanks and an MCV to distract them. Red Alert was a lot more forgiving since all you had to build were tanks and the AI wasted resources building things that aren't tanks.
Im actually looking for a C&C torrent right now, but I seem to be unable to find a download for the original game.
I would swear it was abandonware (I believe is the correct term, not sure) by now, however I keep getting back to either torrents with no seeders or the EA website to purchase the first decade. (Which is like the first 8 C&C games/expansions)
I do still own the original C&C, but the funny thing is it's the old-old school DOS version. I think I even have part of it's manual somewhere, half torn because I used to read it time and time again.
I can't seem to recall that mission Newbi, as a matter of fact I believe mammoth tanks only were in like 3 NOD missions, the first one being where you had like a commando and a bunch of artillery.
I also used to be stuck like mad in the first mission where you can build stealth tanks. (Which I believe my dad ended up finishing in the end)
Even the earlier missions were pretty hard if you didn't know about things like enemy airstrikes always target the most north unit/structure you have, or ofcourse sandbagging off everything you could since the computer simply wouldn't destroy them.
Goddamnit I need that C&C Tiberian Dawn torrent!
:Edit: While checking out a list of C&C missions looking for the one you mentioned Newbi I actually realized I may not have played all the different missions in the game....... Goddamnit x2 I need this game! xD
:Edit2: Eureka! I was victorious, legit free download of the GDI and NOD isos and the Covert Operations iso.
C&C was so amazing. I used to spend so much time with the Commander, Stealth Tanks, Elephant Tanks, the fucking Obelisk of Light ^^ I also remember you could only build your building if they were touching your base, so I would build a sandbag wall into the enemy's base so I could turret it up.
Also, if you finished a mission above a certain threshold of money, you got to start the next mission off with more money than you usually would. So after I found that out I would always sell my entire base before beating a mission ^^
The obelisk was probably my favorite defensive structure in any game ever, actually I recall being I guess about 6 years old, watching my dad playing a NOD mission and confused the artillery with the obelisk, resulting in me thinking (actually for awhile) that artillery could shoot lasers. I didn't figure it out until much later, when I had reached a high enough level to encounter either.
Hah, now that I think about it that might actually be one of my earliest childhood memories.
I also loved "tower rushing" the enemy with sandbags :D, permanent vision ftw!
Download completed, time to see if I can complete the missions without any sandbagging my base and stuff!
