Would you play SC2 if you won the lottery?

The other day, I was daydreaming about winning the lottery and the sweet computer/LAN room I would set up in my new house. My brothers and my roommates all play SC2, and I thought it would be cool to have a place where we could all play together. Then I got to thinking - would I even play Starcraft if I won the lottery?

On the one hand, I don't think I would. With near-infinite money at my disposal, I could travel the world and have almost any experience I desired. While I enjoy playing SC2, I doubt it's one of the premier experiences money can buy.

On the other hand, ever since my dad brought home a PC Jr in 198X, I have been playing games on the computer. With near-infinite free time, I think I would end up playing even more games, and SC2 is my drug of choice at the moment. I also think it would be cool to get coaching from some of the top players and really improve my game (I have no delusions that I have any skill as of now). Would members of TeamLiquid be willing to coach me? Probably not. Would members of TeamLiquid be willing to coach me for a million dollars? Probably.

In the end, I couldn't decide whether I would continue to play SC2 or not. The whole exercise is relatively moot, as I don't play the lottery, but it is an interesting thought experiment nonetheless.

Would you keep playing SC2 if you won the lottery (or barring a lottery in your country, receiving a ridiculous inheritance or something of that nature)?

I am especially interested to hear any progamers thoughts on the matter. Most people, myself included, would immediately quit their jobs upon winning millions of dollars. Progamers seem to be different though, as their job seem a little more glamorous and fun than the average job. Poker players, for example, win millions and jump right back into another tournament. Does SC2 work the same way, or would you get out of gaming and go sit on a beach somewhere?

Hell yeah I would play Sc2 still. A ton more than I do now, in fact. Wouldn't do anything extravagant or nothing. Just quit school, live off the interest, and play however much Sc2 as I damn well please. : )

Edit: I assume the winning is big enough to live comfortably off the interest because you seem willing to throw a million dollars at some 'Liquid guy for coaching. :D

If I won the lottery, I would just buy a better computer to play video games on. Why would having more money change what you enjoy? Unless you think that rich people can only have fun while they are having sex with super models on yachts, then I don't understand why you would feel that you would suddenly not want to play Starcraft if you like doing it now.

When I still had a bit of a financial cushion for the foreseeable future, I still spent a huge portion of my week playing BW, and not doing things like traveling etc... If given the opportunity again, I would go to a lot more events, dreamhack, IPL's, MLG, GSL, OSL, MSL, Proleague, etc...

I love the scene and what else could be better than going around the world to play/hang out with people who have a similar passion?

I would not quit my job until I had found a stable source of income. Winning the lottery is great, but I know that I would burn all that money within the span of a few years. Anyhoo, of course I would keep playing StarCraft. It's literally the best game ever made.

I would want to travel for a year and then set up a business venture I think. Depends how much I won, really.

If I got that much money, yes I would still play Starcraft II and in fact I may invest more into the scene. Maybe start up a new team? Sponsor a current team? Setup a tournament or event? Maybe a LAN Center in my city for Starcraft? OHOHOH! AN ESPORTS CENTER!!!

@Bibbit - Yeah, when I daydream about winning the lottery, I'm talking like $100 million or so. Enough so that I almost couldn't run out of money, even if I tried.

That's a ridiculous amount lol. Hm, I suppose I had effectively infinite money then I'd rock the party boy lifestyle for a while.

Edit: If it was $100 million. Okay, I might be a good boy and give $25m amongst my family, $25m over time to various charities, $25m in some investment/business venture and I'd live a semi extravagant lifestyle with the rest, with travel, property, cars, fancy stuff.

Might play some SC2 once in a while though ^^

Its gonna run out in about a month rolf. People who win the lottery always end up with no money at the end because of this thought. Kinda funny when you think about it.

Play sc2 and do college at a leisurely rate. Oh and run lots of tournaments. I really want to see more and more local stuff here in Minnesota.

Oh thats a good point! I said I'd drop out of school entirely but finishing it super slowly (like 2 courses a year ) would be smart. :D

Also I suspect I wouldnt be getting there by bus anymore. ^^

If anything, I'd probably play more if I won the lottery. Most people play the game for leisure and fun; that doesn't really change even if you get rich.

Probably would. Spend my money and have fun with it but there'll always be time for games. Would probably continue with school too, just cause you'll never know what happens with all that money.

That's an interesting take. Most people would think that if money weren't a problem, they'd play more.

In economic terms, I guess sc2 is an inferior good, meaning you would consume less as your income increases, while it is a normal good for others, meaning you consume more as your income increases. :D

I think you meant sponsoring them =) Running tournaments is a lot of work.
SC is like sex. You should play often, but never too hard. And you should only try hard when it matters.

As a BW player I thought about what the responses would be for the BW community... and well... I just know I wouldn't remake this thread for BW. Countless lives have already been sacrificed for the game =P

@itsjustatank - Yes, I agree that most people play the game for leisure and fun, and SC2 would still be fun if I had millions of dollars. Do you think other things might be more fun and leisurely, though... esp things you might not have access to at your current income level?

@jaybrundage - I think I have enough self-control to live off $100 million for the rest of my life, but I also guess everyone who wins the lottery assumes that...

Yeah! I don't really see why winning it would stop me, just buy a better set up and then get back into playing

Lottery and 'infinite' funds is a bit tame of a thought experiment, since the only real incentive to stop playing Starcraft 2 would be the existence of 'better' and more 'fun' alternatives - and to give an answer: yes I would continue playing Starcraft 2, but not necessarily because it's the most fun thing in the world.

But how about this: Would you play Starcraft 2 if you only had six months left to live? One month? What about a week?

Interesting, but I wouldn't say one thought experiment is necessarily easier/tamer than the other. I think if I had 6 months/1 month/1 week to live, I would definitely not play Starcraft 2, mostly because I have a list of "things I want to do before I die" and regardless of whether or not "play SC2" makes that list, I've already done it. I can check that one off, at least to some degree. That one seems easy.

If I have a natural lifespan but don't need to work for money, however, I need something to fill "the void" that work normally fills. I think I would spend some time traveling, hiking, etc., but sitting on a beautiful beach all day doesn't strike me as the most engaging way to spend a life. I think my question then becomes one of the following:

1) Do I play a lot of SC2? Or, is SC2 robust enough to build a life around?

or

2) Do I play SC2 casually? Or, given mostly unlimited means, is SC2 one of the most entertaining/fun/relaxing activities I could engage in?

Yea, I would probably play a ton more. But with that kind of money at hand, I'd want to do something more than just playing.I'd prolly open a permanent barcraft, an esports bar with different games to watch than just starcraft at one place and trying to expand on it. Going to a lot of events sounds fun, too and would be good for that kind of business. With the amount of tournaments you can really always show some games in a bar like that.
