This, I'm playing PST, IWD 1-2, BG 2, Heroes 3 and such nowadays. Waiting for Diablo 3.

im thinking of selling my ps3. At the moment its just gathering dust next to my pc. I have so many games that i havent even nearly finished. Fallout 3 and new vegas, genji, darksiders, lol i just realised i dont even remember what games i have anymore! The only recent games ive finished are dead space 1 and 2 (which are awesome!)and ffxiii which was shitty too. I only really play sc2 these days and angry birds when im bored. Even gt5 was a waste of time and money. So much grinding and not much else.
I dont know why. I still love gaming but nothing really catches my attention like it use to. Older games are fun but i cant handle shitty textures and resolution for more than an hour at a time

If you're still playing old games you aren't really growing out of video games.
Games just aren't focused on...being fun as much as they used to be. That's really all there is to it. IF you look for some indy games on Steam you can find some amazing gems still.

Nowadays most of games are created not by dedicated people but by marketing specialists, psychologists, social scientists and so on. Adding more content than required to sell the product is probably forbidden.

+ Show Spoiler [rant about game devs] +TL;DR Developers care all about graphics because this is what people want, gameplay mechanics are not important anymore and nobody cares whether the new game hit is, when it comes to actual gameplay, just a bad version of another game and nothing really fun. This cant' lead to something good. tl;dr end.
The problem with modern games is that they are all about graphics and shiny features that don't actually improve the gameplay, thus having the same crappy gameplay mechanics everytime.
I often sound like a douche when I talk about most modern games, but just take some games as an example. Watch the ads, watch the videos, watch the interviews.
Take guild wars 2: It's all about shiny graphics, cool new features and how everything is now persistent and has a cool new system. What that really means is that they don't care whether or not these new features actually bring a better gameplay, or if they really changed anything at all. They cared more about the graphics part(explains why the focus their marketing around that) and how they made everything good that was once crappy. Funny thing, after the sentence "It was all crappy, we made it good." they say "You will still have the same feeling you had in game XY." And yea, what about the gameplay mechanics? You see that in the videos people just press 1 over and over again and sometimes another key, do they ever explain why? No. It seems that they simply don't care that their battle system is a POC.
Now look at Modern Warfare: What exactly is advertised? The graphics, stunning new animations and featurs and all that blargh, but nothing new about the gameplay. Nothing new about how you actually play or how you are able to interact with everything. You always see the same crappy gameplay that involves pressing 1 button and spamming fire, no tactical features or strategic features, just killing guys over and over again. At the "pro" level people like to pretend it's otherwise, and this is true until a certain point, but in the end it's all about who shoots faster....
Now take some of the old games. Dark Age of Camelot was always advertised as the "cool PvP MMO with massive battles", and this is what it is. It has the best PvP out there(opinion, but at least the pvp is at the top); graphics are okay too but thats not a too important point.
Look at battlefield, everyone expects it to have awesome, big battles with tons and tons of features, and this is almost always the case. There are a few exceptions where bf wasn't that good, but BF3 is getting there again.
Or, for example, take Oblivion. It's not really that good compared to morrowind and similar games because they focused too much on graphics, but they were still expected to keep the elder scrolls feeling. They tried that and did a decent job with that, thus making oblivion a good game overall.
You can really feel the focus through advertising and the way people talk about their game. If you hear them talking about shiny graphics and new features without exactly explaining the gameplay mechanics, you can usually tell that the game will suck.
Look at Deus Ex:hr, while the game is really good compared to most other modern games, it's not even near the first deus ex, you can really feel the focus on graphics and shiny stuff and how that influenced the gameplay part.
Even starcraft 2 looked crappy at first because they only advertised graphics, this luckily changed however and the game became actually good.
You are not too picky, you just ascended the need for nice graphics. If you are really a hardcore gamer these days that only cares about good gameplay and gets amazed by shiny graphics, too, but doesn't care if the game looks like a 90s game, then you have a tough time.
Saying you're growing out of games is wrong. I bet, just as it happens to me, if there is one game that you really really like you'll still play the game 24/7. Happens to me, starcraft 2 is one example.^^ I mean, it could be the case, but most of the time it isn't.

The growing production costs and a need to get a title out as fast as possible and sell it to millions of people shifts development priorities drastically compared to the 90s era.
Games just aren't being made for gamers anymore. They're made for masses of consumers that spend like 2 hours a day playing video games as generic entertainment. As long as it's flashy and easy to play, everything goes.
I actually hoped all the "PC gaming is dead" stories came true and most of the big publishers abandoned PC as a platform. As it is, they're only choking it with trash ports and act as if they're doing us some kind of a favor.

it's times like this when you take out your old SNES, N64, PS2 and play the classics.

If you compare new games to old games in any kind of objective non-emotional way then the new games are better than old games in every single way. What new games are missing is the innocence of the 80's/90's which leaked into the 00's and is almost completely gone now. Mario as a concept simply wouldn't fly now, or earthworm jim or chucky egg or any number of classic games. Games must fall into obvious catagories for us gamers, because we are reluctant to try something truly new and original.
If you are talking about the slow death of PC gaming, i blame the culture of elitism that markets gaming machines that cost thousands of pounds instead of hundreds. The PC gaming community calls for more and more demanding software for their high end PCs and developers want to give it to them, but how attractive do you think this market is to most sane people?

I haven't truly enjoyed games in a few years. They are always made for casual gamers these days : dumbed down games with bad stories focusing on dark graphics...
Blizzard games are pretty much the only exception. I do most of my gaming from older games (SNES, GBA and PSX) and things like Counter-Strike, D2 and Guild Wars. Only good game I've found recently is Trackmania.
Even Dragon Age, which people keep saying is a godly game, didn't do much for me. Dragon Age 2 was alright, but I reached a point in Chapter 2 where I was 1hitting everything and I realized the story was set entirely in that 1 place so I stopped playing.
I'm hoping the future will have games with vibrant colors. Seriously, dark games are fucking depressing. It has ruined so many potential games for me. I want games to be fun and colorful, not black and gray. Why do people need every single fucking game to be dark?
Remember Mario games? Imagine if they were all dark... fucking terrible. I hate the gaming industry. And to achieve these dark games, they also sacrificed gameplay and story because for some reason you can't have them all.
You know things are pretty bad when even the Final Fantasy series isn't a true jRPG anymore. Don't even need to play it, just mash A. Thank god 5 and 6 will always be there.
Games I'm hoping will not be terrible : Diablo 3 Guild Wars 2 Skyrim Natural Selection 2
That's pretty much it. That's the only hoping I have in gaming for the next little while.

Man I feel the same way as well, you're not alone.

All "dark" games :D, you are joking, right?

Find me potentially good non-dark games. I also didn't say I hated all dark games. Just that there needs to be normal games too with actual colors.
Diablo 3 is not that bad. It's a fantasy world, and has flashy spells and animations. It has a good feel.
Guild Wars 2 is not dark overall. It's a bit darker than the original but it should be alright.
Skyrim, I haven't checked out much yet so I can't really judge.
Natural Selection 2 makes sense as a dark game. It's meant to be that way and it works. It's different than say a shooter like CoD or something.
I'm talking about making every game dark and gritty for the sake of making them dark and gritty. These games make sense, a lot of other games don't.

Dude, just play Baldur's Gate. Period.
You remember all of that Dragon Age fuss? Can you picture a badass dinosaur and Paris Hilton's dog? BG is the dinosaur, Dragon Age is the shitty dog.
Of course games are shitty now, gaming is going mainstream and lots of people play nowadays. Thus a huge pile of shit, as someone already said.
But one day, you find a brain in your mail, you equip said brain, and realize that you have mostly garbage games on your PC.

Well I guess that the trend going to "dark games" is because it's cool and always attract more people than happy and funsy things.
It's no guarantee that a game is bad, though, because there are really good games that are completely "dark".

A lot of games are turning into casual fests ya, =\ someone like me whos been gaming for 20+ years ive just gotten so good at adapting and solving puzzles(lolololol thanks SFT, BW, OOC, Mario, and Mario Kart, plus the ton of RPGs i played for a bit at my house or at my friends) I log onto say Dead Island which even though it only grabbed my attention for a few days was alright because outside of the bug breaking ambiance(which there was a lot of) I still got immersed enough to have some fun. I cant say the same for a lot of games ive played lately. I have already just thrown my PS3 on the back burner and only play PS2/Watch occasional Blu-Ray.
I also constantly tweak my gaming rig to get better performance but I don't think Ill be doing that again for a while can play any game on the market but theres nothing to play lol, outside of say playing Crysis and going nerdgasm over 60 FPS on Very High.(I didn't care much for the storyline or levels of Crysis).
Edit-Oh ya and one thing I love is take for example Dead Island, says its suppose to be so huge open area Island and yet the damn thing if you loaded all zones onto 1 area would be like a 10 minute drive through all of it lol.

I get home from work, open my steam and stare at my game list. Lately I've put time into ES: Oblivion, Assassin's Creed 2, Mass Effect 2 and then LoL/SC2/WoW but I get bored pretty fast nowadays. I feel too much anticipation for new games but NONE of them are out. Haha. All I dream for is just ONE to be released. Here is a list of them and until one is released I will be in complete distaste for games.
Skyrim Star Wars The Old Republic (even if it sucks!) Guild Wars 2 Heart of the Swarm Campaign Diablo 3 Battlefield 3
I know any one of those will take hours of my time.

I actually think you're just too picky. There were a ton of shit games back then. You just dont remember them.
There were excellent, good games, there were crap games. Just like now. Did I enjoy games like Dark Sun, M&M 6, Rebel Assautl, Wing Commander 5? Yes, but they were only good games. Just like games like Crysis 2, DX:HR are just "good" and not excellent games.
It also comes down to personal taste. For me Oblivion was one of the worst games ever made.

Doom, Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder, Thief, Ultima Underworld, Diablo, Dark Forces. All "dark" games & it's not really a new concept. People want (?) a realistic style, and well, the world is kinda dark/brown/greyish (unless you're on mushrooms like Mario).

I didn't really post enough information for you to know about me but whatever I'll clarify. I used to game on BW for 5-6 hrs a day after work. Now if I get 5games in a week that's suprising. Lately I play so little compared to back then. If that's not growing out of games I don't know what is. New games aren't focused on being fun? what

For me its similar, even though Idra at WCG online quals and many many many other people said I tried to go pro BW(yet you've never heard of me wonder why.....) and would play insane amounts of games every day over a course of 5-8 hours. I would wake up go to class, come home maybe do some homework, play at least 2 hours go to work around 5pm come home around 10pm play until 3 or 5 am rinse repeat(luckily i had to get up at like 8:30 so i always got a few hours of sleep). But now I only play BW when I go on trips or to places where I have to bring my laptop, that seems to be the most where I play old blizzard games lol(have diablo, D2+LoD, SC:BW, WC3TFT installed, but meh...) But if I am at home I just kinda sit and watch netflix and occasionally play some SC2(tried to go pro with that with a similar schedule but meh......dreams how they never die....) I guess im just completely and totally burnt out on games....

Get Street Fighter 4 AE over Mortal Kombat. Its got so much more balance and depth. The matches are so fast you can play for 10-20 minutes and feel satisfied. Its also intensly competitive like sc2 so it keeps your[my] intrest.
