I was smoking some funny stuff and drinking some beer, when I suddenly noticed the sound of an alarm. 'Meh', I thought. We had a false alarm a couple of days ago in the shop below my apartment. No biggie.
My roommate hears the alarm after I mention it on ventrilo, and he goes into our livingroom to investigate. Guess what? Theres water POURING through the ceiling.. We get to work, start putting shit under the leak. We assume someone has forgot his bathtub or maybe a waterpipe broke.
At some point I open the door to the stairs and the alarm is deafening. We realise that this is no false alarm. I can't turn on the lights in stairwell, but we can see people running wild and yelling: 'Get out! Get out! There's a fire!'
We still refuse to believe that it is a serious fire as we can't really see any smoke or anything like that. Only when I go out on my small balcony and look up I see A LOT of smoke pouring out of the windows above our apartment I realise this is bad.
PANIC!! I scream over ventrilo to my friends 'Theres a fire I gotta go!!!', and proceed to grab 1 of my roomies cats while he grabs the other. After the cats are safe I decide to go up again and grab my computer and the rest of my beers too (lol).
As I arrive outside the first firetruck has already arrived. (took like 3mins from I heard about the fire till they arrived!) followed by several fire trucks and police cars. We can see the smoke pouring out from the 3rd floor. The first fireman on the scene asks me if it is our aparment which is burning, to which I reply 'no we are on 2nd floor, the fire is on the 3rd'
Seconds later several firemen dissapears into our building complex. Brave men, indeed!
People are standing allover, some in their night clothes.. We live smack-center of downtown, so many people gather. 5-10mins later we see a fireman sticking his head out of the window of the aparment which was burning. Phew! Big relief! Atleast our apartment will not burn down while we watch.
After being interviewed by police we are allowed up again.. Theres water pouring in through the ceiling over 50% of the apartment We have no insurance
Thankfully the cleanup guys arrive on scene to start removing the water.. And to tear most of our ceiling down :/
This is the pics my roomie took at that point:
