i know there is a thread "how did you choose your race". But i want to talk more about the Zerg specifically and the interessting aspect with the races in starcraft from a "fan"-perspective.
But to begin with, lets get out of the way how i chose the zerg:
In fact it was pretty much a random choice. In broodwar i played only casually with my friends, so we played all random there, no specific races on none of them. I guess i liked protoss the most in broodwar, because they had the "best" multi purpose units, especially the dragoon.
Then i got a beta key for sc2 and in the very first game, me and my friend played a custom game on blistering sands (that map was so lol). He picked protoss right away, so i wanted to pick something different and went with the zergies.
I have never switched ever since. Sure i played the campaign and played some teamgames as random, so i know what the other races play like, but i mean i never left the swarm
And it turned out to be blessing and curse at the same time. I think everyone agrees that Zerg is the hardest race to learn in term of mechanics. Also i would argue Zerg is the most unforgiving race in terms of making ingame blunders or forgetting things. But i have no intention in going into any kind of balancing discussion here. I think the balancing is pretty fine actually.
The blessing is that i totally like that Zerg plays so different from the other races. Especially the macro, with the "fourth" ressource beeing the larva. And by some weird concidence it turned out that the guys i personally find the most likeable in the community are zergs.
Then again, what i really find quite astonishing is the racial solidarity in starcraft. I mean in other international sports most people tend to root for their fellow countrymen. But i think this is very different in starcraft tournament.
Example:
I am german and i guess it goes without a doubt that the top german player at the moment is Socke. Now if Socke is playing ... lets say ... Stephano for example, i catch my self rooting for the Zergs instead, even if i think Socke is an awesome player and a really cool guy.
Apparently that is pretty common for starcraft fans and makes starcraft unique in terms of "fansupport". It makes tournaments much more enjoyable and much easier to pick a guy to cheer for.
I think its a great thing and makes watching starcraft even more fun.
