Classes so far have been pretty easy, but it's a music school so what do you expect? For my first semester I'm taking aural skills, which consists of sight-singing and music dictation (quickly and accurately writing down music that you hear); music theory; and music history. All standard curriculum within any music school, nothing special. I'm fortunate to be at this school; the level of playing here is so much higher compared to my previous school, and I've had to rise up to the challenge to meet the standard, so that's definitely a good challenge that'll keep me stimulated and productive. I'm guessing that once things get into full swing here, I'll be practicing up to 8-10 hours a day, which sounds intense but it really isn't considering how little schoolwork I actually have, and how much everybody else is working. To put it into perspective, I'm practicing about the same amount of time that law and medical students are studying and reading (which I find to be more mind numbing than making music). The only amusing thing about all this is that those two professions can say that they'll be making great contributions to society while making a great paycheck, while I make a contribution to society (that is becoming less and less appreciated) while barely making a living.
However, the biggest travesty is that here in the dorms have terrible internet. Inbetween classes and practicing, the one thing I want to do to relax is enjoy a high apm game of Starcraft 2. But for some reason, a modern accredited school such as my own finds no need to make sure that the level of bandwidth is at reasonable standards, and as such playing is near impossible. I've realized that if I was to go to hell, my personal torture from Lucifer himself would be to play games of TvZ (which is my best matchup) and watch as my marines hopelessly get rammed by banelings, over and over for all eternity. How's that for sad times As such, I've decided with great sadness that I have to put the game on hold and focus on studies. MLG, Dreamhack, and other big tournaments will still be watched with great enthusiasm, but I'm no longer a player of the game. It's too bad, I was so closed to reaching Master's league too.
Anyway, just thought I'd share, hope you enjoyed the read.
With great sorrow,
