Hey guys, it's my 2nd ever blog on TL
For those who don't me at all (very few on TL do), I'm a High School Senior enrolled in the International Baccalurette program (more details here) and part of it involves a presentation in area of the "Theory of Knowledge". My TOK teacher mentioned that the presentation involves getting a real-life event (E-Sports) and breaking it down into finding knowledge issues.
So I was brainstorming and was wondering about the question of qualifying E-Sports as an actual sport, why is was being looked down upon in society etc. and why it's fairly unknown considering that a fair majority of the population plays one of the major video games (LoL, WoW, SC2, Halo, COD etc.) and then re-expand back into other stuff such as why other "sports" are fairly not widespread in the US (ultimate frisbee, rugby, cricket, chess etc.), other issues of qualifying stuff into sports (most famous example: cheerleading) and attaching it to our culture's seeming ability to have to give everything a chance (examples include being class-conscious of African Americans, Hispanics etc.)
And with counterclaims addressing popularity, organization, I can just use Brood-War and recent MLGs to address it.
So what do you guys think?
P.S. Felt like putting this in a blog because i don't think it's going to be big to be in the SC2 General section.
P.P.S.S. What's that program that lets you do presentations but not using powerpoints? It's that think where if you click next, it bounces to an image somewhere (kinda like a posterboard)
P.P.P.S.S.S. Will update if it gets approved.

I just graduated from the IB this year, so i have some idea what you're going through.
The good thing about the TOK Presentation is that its pretty wide open in terms of your topic and how you approach it. I definitely think there is potential in your idea, but from your description I feel like you're starting to have too many topics going on. The presentation needs to be strongly focused on one particular topic, so if you have too many examples of different sports then you risk not making your point.
Also, another problem is that you have a limited time window. You're going to have to spend a lot of time just explaining about the Esports scene because it isn't all that well known. But i definitely think that its possible to have a good presentation on it. You'll just need to plan it really well.
Also, good luck come May...the exams won't be as bad as you probably think they are.

There is definitely room for eSports and video games in there. Obviously the issues you would be analyzing would apply to a variety of sports and games, some of which you mention, and so would be of interest to a wider readership. It would also allow us to understand how public perception of video games in specific is shifting, though obviously it is a generational change and liable to occur over many years.
Also, when adding additional postscripts you don't need to add extra Ss, just more Ps, as it is post-post-script.
And as an interesting tidbit, did you know that before the advent of football the most widespread inter-collegiate sport in the US was debate?

LMFAO go for it dude
I start TOK next semester and have been thinking of something similar but perhaps for my extended essay.

Yeah, I think I'm just gonna narrow it down onto the perception of video games and then expand it back into a view of other sports and games in general.
Time window is no problem, my teacher told me that I can use a maximum of 47 minutes which is more than enough I would say, and if I need more, I just can cut some stuff out from the summarization of e-sports.

Really? I always thought that Track and Field was the most popular inter-collegiate sport before that (Cross Country/Track and Field bias here). Hmmm I guess I will never look at incontrol the same way again (he used to be a debater in college).
Oh and thanks about the additional post scripts.

If you can write 4000 words on E-Sports go for it. I'd say the summarization of E-Sports is a good 2000 words. haha. I wish I had done it (doing it on Facebook and Social Interactions instead o_O)
The only difficulty is citing sources as far as I can tell. E-Sports is fairly new and I'm having a similar problem with Facebook.

I graduated from IB last year and honestly you can do whatever topic you want (unless the teacher specifically said certain topics can't be done).
Counter claims are easy (articles in Wall Street with barcraft, MLG events, prize pools of GSL, BW players making $100,000s, maybe show a VOD of a Proleague finals where there are thousands of fans.
Ways of knowing should be very very easy as ESPORTS is a spectator sport and its kind of in that area between being accepted as a sport and being a "hobby".
Areas of knowledge is also the same concept, just fill in what works with your presentation, if I remember correctly, not all of them have to be used.
Personal examples should be easy and I remember I included videos in mine so something like should help. Videos count as sources iirc. + Show Spoiler +

Hey what year in IB are you?I finished the first year (Gr. 11) and dropped out of full IB for partial instead, but I've already done the TOK essay and presentation. I actually did my presentation with a group of 5 on video games myself, and the anonymous interaction. We even acted out a session of Combat Arms with one guy raging and 2 other guys (me and a friend) taunting him heheheheh.
You'd best find a few Areas of Knowledge that eSports represents. Art? Science? History? Before that you really need to make a knowledge issue which is presented by the eSports scene. I've found that the majority of the presentation is the knowledge issue, while making points by giving examples that you find in eSports.
It's not much but I hope that helped you as much as possible gl with the presentation and IB in general T_T
Oh and by the way, I have a feeling the presentation program you are talking about is the one that comes with Smartboards. Unless I'm mistaken...yup I'm probably mistaken.

Haha alright. Thanks for input guys. I'm definitely going to (timing) push for this now.
