still looking for a job and it irks me whenever I see shit like this posted on there so I finally decided to reply to one of them. Troll or whatever you want to call it, I sent the email back like this.
If you are going to be sexist and ask only for females, then you need to realize that the requirements you are asking them to not have are very distinctively female traits from my experiences with girls and women (and I have had many). Perhaps you should look into hiring people in general who just aren't fucking retarded and take their work seriously.
Let me break it down for you:
Looking for females (must be 21 and over) living in Huntington Beach, CA (or in near by City) to work at a local retail shop. Must have/be able to: ! Bubbly and fun personality There are guys with these traits, some might call them friendly, some might call them gay. ! Be willing and able to clean Out of the 1000s of females I know, only 2 of them have ever showed this trait. ! Follow direction Men can't follow directions? ! Work hard obvious, considering most of the world is built by men. ! Willing to work weekends Guys don't call their guy friends on Friday night and say "I need to go out and dance tonight or I will explode! Fuck work!" ! Be willing to learn new things daily and be able to take initiative As far as I've seen, men are the initiators in most situations and always ready to adapt and learn. ! No standing around please Men don't dilly-dally ! No playing on the computer, no cell phone use (Except while on your designated break period.) What facebook and text messaging? Sounds like a female problem.
Pay starting at approx. $9.00 plus tips, 90 day review with possibility for raise. This is a serious job, where we also have fun with perks along the way. We're looking for just the right people, so if this sounds like you please respond with:
The right "people"? You mean female? Unless this job entails doing sexual favors or wearing slutty clothes I don't see why a man can't do it just as well as a woman.
~ Resume ~ Facebook page link. Your actual Facebook URL, not just your name. This can help us get a better idea of your personality. ~ Hours available to work Monday through Sunday (Must be able to work weekends.) ~ Available start date

There is a valid point to be made... but I don't think you made it. Hopefully you enjoyed this though LOL.
BTW I can't believe they expect a link to your facebook page. That's pretty ridiculous.
|
Without knowing the specific details of the job, you can't say if there's a valid reason to request a gender specific applicant. Further, replying with sexism to carry flag for equality is an...interesting approach.
|
Your argument makes a lot of sense, until you tell us that is a job to victoria secret or something. What is this job that wants women only?
|
Facebook page.. (aka so we can see if you are good looking or not) what a bunch of sleezes lol.

a lot of employers these days check you out on facebook to see the 'real' you. because apparently its not good enough to be the model employee at work anymore, you have to be boring at home too :D
|
I would laugh if this job turned out to be at Hooters.
|
Pretty sure its either a old man pervert who runs some girls clothing shop or just some dumb feminist/lesbian running whatever shop.
Yea the asking for facebook page is a huge tipoff that they want to see what you look like. But I mean I can understand employers wanting to look at your page because people tend to fake it until they make it.

gender specific in some situations, esp retail isnt a huge deal imo. hell im pretty sure most women DONT want to go to a victoria's secret staffed by men and that seems perfectly reasonable to me.
the facebook part really made me o.O tho, i would never give my fbook to an employer. hell i hang out and have tons of fun and go drinking with my boss, and still he didnt get my fbook until i had left the job. its just not necessary imo. thats a totally different rant tho lol.
|
I think the primary reason to check Facebook would be to see if you're bitching about a current/old job and stuff...but in my opinion no employer should have the right to intrude there. Retail jobs, if it's a cleaner that would involve cleaning women's toilets because they already have the men's side covered, or if's going to be working around changing rooms or if it's a shop that people may be more comfortable with female staff (like Victoria's Secret etc) could have a million reasons to ask for a specific gender.
If there is no reason to, it's sexism. I'd be surprised if this isn't just you seeing sexism where it doesn't exist.

Actually.. some people look for it because, they want to know if they look okay, and if they were people who use bad language a lot, and stuff like that. They don't care about looks, but it's possible they are super sleezes. I learned from people at school that they do this. Guys, or girls, w.e.

the point is they are vague about what the position is and require female only while acting like they are looking for a serious person.

Lingerie store then?

I think in general women are better at selling stuff. In TV commercials, almost all the voices are done by females because sex sells. Women are attractive and they are just better at selling clothing.
I don't really have enough to go on to tell if the employer is just some scuzzy sleazebag though.

I don't really have enough to go on to tell if the employer is just some scuzzy sleazebag though. Sex does sell but that doesn't mean women are the best salespeople. Look at car dealerships or most tech stores. Majority of salespeople are salesmen.

Of course they're looking for a serious person for their position, or are you implying women cant be serious people? My point was that without knowing what the position was you have no basis to attack them for a gender specific employment spot. Further, that there is no basis to attack the concept of gender specific employment.
If this is just a generalised retailer with the job involving nothing that could be gender related, then yes there's a problem to be addressed, but I think it's unlikely that is the case here or in general.
Edit: Reworded first sentence.

I read the title as sexiest jobs...
I was thoroughly disappointed

Mhmmmm, I'd be interested in hearing what the actual position is. If it's a generic position that could be filled by anyone, then yes, it does seem discriminatory. However, if there's a reason for the job to be female-only, well then you're going to look silly. :p

Main point of the thread aside, the ad on its own is already kind of creepy and stupid. What sort of retail shop is this O_o

Oh, they can look you up on facebook if they want. But they shouldn't ask you for the url directly in my opinion.

Your interpretation seems way twisted. Nowhere does it say they are looking for women because they think only women can have those qualities (which is what you spend all this time addressing in your reply). They say they are looking for women, and someone who works hard. That doesn't mean they correlate those things. It's liking someone hiring for a warehouse saying-- we are looking for someone who can lift 75 lbs and who is honest. There's not a connection there, they are just looking for both qualities.
The only claim it seems you could have for sexism is the women only part, but like others have pointed out, it's really hard to know for sure until you know what kind of store it is. If you really feel like you would be a good fit for the store, you should walk in and ask to talk to the manager about it.

I don't think his interpretation is wrong, I think he's just trying to prove a point by matching the literal requirements with one that seems awfully arbitrary. If you'd replace female with male in the above ad, some feminist group would win a lawsuit over that shit.
Not sure what he's actually trying to achieve here though. The facebook requirements makes it seem like they just handpick their employees to be more like the ones they currently have so they have a "nice" work environment. Can be considered discrimination, but no point in trying to fight it.

They want women only, regardless, and they want them to have the qualities listed. The qualities you listed that were more likely to be found on men are there to make sure that the women they do hire have them, since as you said, it's less likely that women will possess them. The facebook profile thing gives them a picture to refer to, which is definitely a huge factor when the job is hiring only women.

That was a pretty funny blog. It could be argued that a lot of your arguments were sexist... but I do agree with you lol.

Private corporations should be able to run their businesses however they want. You don't know the specific reasons why they are looking for a female, but obviously there are reasons.

The Facebook thing is stupid what if I don't have one

OP, You apparently don't even care to ask why they only ask for females. Jobs don't need to employ everyone. Maybe they have a whole bunch of guys working there and want both genders working there equally? You seem to completely not care about the circumstances, and you went about it incredibly unprofessionally.
You surely aren't getting the job now >.>

My opinion is that it should be perfectly legal for imbeciles not to let black people in their store and it's obviously my right not to every shop there and to tell everyone not to go there. Basically, it's your business and you should be allowed to do whatever the hell you want with it, even if it's absolutely ridiculous. You should have that freedom.
However we're in a setting where we don't discriminate, and so in these times, we just shouldn't discriminate at all (or with a few exceptions i guess).

I like how all of the points you made are sexist rofl. I don't know if this was supposed to be irony or what.

1. Most of the points you made are more sexist than the ad. "Men built this world" "Men don't dilly-dally".
2. I think this is a disguised advert for prostitution. The details are vague and the personality requirements are more like someone looking for a partner than a job candidate. So they require females because the person writing the ad is male and straight (...)

BTW I can't believe they expect a link to your facebook page. That's pretty ridiculous. a lot of employers these days check you out on facebook to see the 'real' you. because apparently its not good enough to be the model employee at work anymore, you have to be boring at home too :D
What if you don't use facebook... I can see them thinking you're BSing and not hire you which would be kinda retarded.

facepalm there is saying the obvious and then there is misogyny. would be funny if they called you for an interview tho
|
lol so funny. Oh well, shit like this happens. Since it's sexist against men nothing will come of it. Welcome to America.
|
Did you stop and use your brain for a second? Maybe it's a women's bra store. Most women would rather ask another women for advice on clothing than another man. Are you looking to work in a bra store? Some women don't like asking a complete stranger male if their bra fits correctly.
Furthermore your email shows your own ignorance and pregidous. You are a complete hypocrit. I have included some quotes from your email to show how pregidous you are:
"There are guys with these traits, some might call them friendly, some might call them gay."
"Out of the 1000s of females I know, only 2 of them have ever showed this trait."
"obvious, considering most of the world is built by men."
"What facebook and text messaging? Sounds like a female problem."
TLDR: OP is a butthurt sexist who is angry because he can't get a job working in a bra store.
Yeh, you might want to watch what you say when you are calling someone else sexist.
|
I don't see the problem. There are plenty of places who hire only women or only men for customer service/retail.
This is usually because that is what will appeal to the customers who shop there. Business is business, companies will look to hire those who will maximize their sales.
It's not really a matter of sexism as it is a matter of maximizing business.
Try to use logic from a business perspective, in the future it can save you from making a fool of yourself by showing complete ignorance.
|
I think you are misreading the add. They want a female WITH those traits. As for whatever reason they want a female isn't really necessary but the other traits were more of if you aren't ______ then don't bother coming. so its not really sexist.
|
I feel a bit the same at the moment, but that's probably just me being bitter because all the jobs closest to my home right now seem to be at the YWCA xD. I feel like you did go a bit over the top in some places though :p, but since it's just right back at them stereotyping seems fine.
And I agree with micronesia, WTFBBQ facebook? O.o
|
So to fight sexism, you used reverse sexism? I would love to know what retail outlet this is. o;

This is a pretty good perspective to look at it from

Idk why, but a job requiring a link to your facebook page seems wrong on at least 7 levels.
Edit: Also, charlie, on the off chance that this was some elaborate rape ruse, well then their sexism helped you dodge a bullet now, didn't it? Silver lining.

Oh Charlie, you never cease to amuse and entertain, but it's never for the reasons you're trying to LOL.

Your first sentence is hypocritical with regards to your topic. But then, you're a retard, so that's not surprising.

I was expecting a blog about the pay discrepancies between male and female pornstars.

I feel like asking for a link to someone's facebook page violates several employment laws.
|
Ah, so what do we want here, equality?
I can almost assure you that if this job had exact same description and asked for "men over 21 years old", the feminists / woman's rights people would be enraged and go the distance to enforce this employer to "fix" it. Although I somewhat sympathize with the OP, I'm sick of hearing equal employer / employment crap - it's so blatantly obvious some jobs are suited for one sex over another.

Whenever you post haji your icon always relates to what you're saying. How do you do that shit.

Man, if someone asked for my FB link, I'd be fucked since I actually don't really go on FB.

Some people took this thread too seriously...

Hell, in America you could probably sue for these hiring requirements and immediately lose because you're taking shit too seriously. The problem is that if you're looking to hire young females, you're obviously not selecting your staff because they have the strongest work ethic you're looking for, or an intense drive to lead your business forward, you're hiring them because they're young attractive women. Don't bullshit around that.

When I was working at a startup, the engineer responsible for recruiting was literally checking the interviewee's facebook page while talking to him/her on the phone.
I think this is pretty much common practice these days, except that they don't state it explicitly. Mine is very private (un)fortunately

Pregidous? Prejudiced????? ????? ??????

How is this prejudiced? He doesn't explicitly say all guys who are bubbly and fun are gay. He may be insinuating bubbly and fun are purely gay traits but i think that's a bit of a stretch.
On August 29 2011 07:47 thepeonwhocould wrote: "Out of the 1000s of females I know, only 2 of them have ever showed this trait."
Again he's saying the majority of women he's met are not willing to clean. Prejudiced? Not really. Presumptuous? Probably.

A cold hard fact. Its actually true. That isn't prejudiced.
On August 29 2011 07:47 thepeonwhocould wrote: "What facebook and text messaging? Sounds like a female problem."
Probably the only line that seems to be prejudiced.

If i saw an advert for a job that was obviously sexist and wanted to see my facebook page and other unreasonable requests I'd just realise that I don't want to work for that company anyway.
Women get advantages in some ways, but they are also judged in ways men aren't, so it's really swings and roundabouts.
The OP main idea seems to be that you shouldn't use gender stereotypes to evaluate individuals, and this I can agree with.
|
My family is in the retail business. Males would obviously make more competent clerks, but people prefer dealing with females when it comes to customer service. My mother has mostly women working for her (which is a disaster, let me tell you), and my father only ever hired female clerks. That's just the practice.
Remember too that truly competent individuals all have better jobs anyways, so they wouldn't be applying to work in a retail store in the first place. You're going to get idiots no matter what gender you're looking for.
Also, if you want to know about a sexist job, look no further than bartending at a nightclub. Obviously it makes sense to have a couple hot male bartenders for the ladies present, but the majority are going to be females. At the nightclub where I worked, the first bartender you saw when you walked in was this hot, large-breasted blonde named Andrea, who very well knew how to show off her assets.
She made $1500 in tips every night.

Of course it is, Mr. Gavel. Let me show you via a baller-esque demonstration:
*insert graph here*
Above in this non-existant graph I almost made up, you can see the percentage of good male clerks compared to good female clerks. These results come from a poll done where we went up to male clerks and asked them "are you more competent than a female clerk". We then went up to female clerks and asked them "do you feel that perhaps your non-degree of competence is lesser than the quantitatively more lack in non-competence of your male counterparts"? The latter question was asked by our poll-makers, while drunk and eating mashmallows.
This flawless logic is an undeniable demonstration that male clerks are indeed more competent than female clerks.
Or does it have something to do with chest hair?
|
Okay they are discriminating. But you are obviously really sexist lol.
|
Well, to be fair they could have simply said "Must have boobs," but then I guess fat men would be qualified to apply too...
Seriously, go look at a bunch of men's magazines and then look at some women's magazines... In both of them you will see at least 90% of the ads feature women. There is a reason for that.
