I've been using VLC media player until last year.
At that point, I always watched a lot of .avi files and maybe some .wmv files. But then it turned out .avi was a terrible format. I didn't know why, but it was.
I met something. I wanted to watch some anime, but the media file was an .mkv, a Matroska Media Container. And at first, it was stupidly dumb. VLC lagged and stuttered. VLC crashed and burned. But I wanted to watch that .mkv file.
And so I began to search. It was not long I found, among other things, possibly the best media player out there.
There are a lot of media players other there. VLC, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, DivX Player, WinAmp. Unfortunately, like all super popular things, they tend to be really terrible.
That's when I found Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPCHC) with CCCP.
Of course, the only reason it is good, and the reason why some players are better than others, is because it supports external codecs, and there are huge anime communities around developing high quality (720p+) videos that the require good external codec support that VLC media player lacks.
So these communities released something called the Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP), which's recent version plays nearly everything you're going to encounter. There's also something called the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack which has every single codec that every exists.
The MPCHC with CCCP has a really retro style interface, but it works very well. There are a huge number of options available, too many to actually detail. If you want something, chances are it can do it
Oh, and apparently CCCP is a pun on the Russian name for the USSR. That's why the page is themed interestingly.
The CCCP only works for recent Windows releases, but something similar has been released for Macs called Perian, which uses Quicktime instead of Media Player Classic Home Cinema.
Not that I'm trying to be elitist or anything. Just throwing some knowledge out there to make people more aware. You don't really have to stop using VLC.
And since this is a blog, my DeathAdder has gotten the dreaded double click problem. It's been a good three years.

The KM player isn't too shabby either.
|
KMP is still good, though it seems like development has stopped and it's going to die sooner or later. But don't be afraid, the guy who initially did it made a new project, the PotPlayer. Very similar to KMP, but better :p

i go with k-lite codec pack and media player classic, wouldn't want anything else.

Added. Was deciding whether to put it in or not. Didn't see much of a need to, but it's also a great media player even though it's forum based.
Also should have mentioned K-Lite in there, but I think it's still on MPC while CCCP moved to MPCHC. Likely no difference though, and I haven't had much experience with it.

How about the GOM player?
|
I have used gom player for years now. It basically plays everything and I really enjoy the controls etc

avi is also just a container... it contains video and audio streams. XVID is what you're thinking of which is commonly associated with avi, but it doesn't have as good compression as h264 for the same quality. I still use XVID tho because it's what my mp3 player plays.
CCCP and MPC/zoom have been super standard for at least 5 years, but congratulations anyway. Most common video question on the internet "Why won't it play?" "Use MPC + CCCP". Although lately MPC and zoom have been not working properly for me despite much use of internet and tweeking setttings, so I use KMPlayer which works as well as MPC used to for me.

Most ppl hated VLC because of how it handles subtitles so fan subbers pushed people off using it ionno if it's still any issue anymore. So people moved around kmplayer mplayer wmp-hc potplayer etc.

Heh, deja vu, almost but in reverse.
I remember struggling to find a player for .mkv files way back (forgot what). I too stumbled upon CCCP and managed to get those files work.
I actually stumbled upon VLC after messing with CCCP. Nowadays, I just use VLC for most of my video viewing, as I have not had any problems with it thus far.

VLC glitching/pixelation during sudden transitions with 720p/1080p is a biiiiiiiiiitch though, not to mention being stuck at certain points in the video without being able to drag past them. I hate that shit. But I've heard mixed/half-hearted reviews about every other player so...

My only complaint about VLC is how poorly it handles ordered chapters. From what I understand it's to do with how VLC deals with all videos as a network stream and they probably won't ever support them.
That's the only time I ever have to use MPC though. For everything else VLC is much better.

I have much more trouble getting MPC to work with fansubs than VLC. I've never heard of anyone hating VLC for it's subtitle support before...
Not to mention MPC refuses to load subs at all from genuine Blu-Rays while VLC has no issues.

That sounds like a problem with your video files more than anything. I've never had an issue with any of my Blu-Rays or rips. Can't really blame VLC for not playing back corrupt data properly...

People used those players to use VSfilter/DirectVobSub + those players. VLC has problems not supporting things like colors and animated karaoke along with much sharper and cleaner subtitles. No one uses MPC's or ffdshows subtitle handlers because they come out too fuzzy. http://imouto.my/ffdshow-post-processing-high-resolution-soft-subs-for-anime-materials/ oh wow this has been updating haven't read this in a long time though like 2 years

Soft subs in VLC (ignore the JPG artifacts, imgur didn't like my massive png): http://i.imgur.com/2HYWe.jpg
Meanwhile in MPC... + Show Spoiler +
Don't get me wrong. I also like MPC a lot or I wouldn't have it installed. Saying VLC has bad subtitle support is just so wrong. The things you complain about might have been true 10 years ago (I can remember some subtitle timing issues a long time ago) but really...
