I got my paycheck recently and I decided to give the classic Brood War a shot. At first, I was reluctant into buying the game because my computer has problems reading discs and the boxed version of Starcraft's Battle Chest is kinda pricey. Maybe it has something to do with that Prima guide that goes with the game? :/
Anyways, I bought the game at Blizzard's store for basically half the price (as it should be) and I had to wait about 5 hours to get the game to finish up downloading. When I finally got to playing the campaign, I was just as blown away as I was when I watched my brother play.
I mentioned on my previous blogs that I never got a chance to play Brood War in it's entirety. For one, my brother hogs the game to himself and we were not willing to give online multiplayer a chance because of how expensive our internet bills would be (this was before we discovered broadband). So it's just him playing the campaign and the skirmishes.
Now I got my hands on it, I have to say that it was 15 dollars well spent. The game may look quite aged looking at it now, but I love a great deal about it in both story and gameplay.
I might give ladders a try, and I am thinking of playing Zerg there. But I wonder what build order should I start practicing on. Thinking of something a bit basic. Like the 9 Pool? Or is that considered cheese?

Good lad!
9 pool isn't cheese although it is an aggressive build in ZvP and ZvT. You'll need the build order to go past 9 supply though go to liquipedia and look up some matchup-specific builds like 3 hat muta in ZvT and 3 hat spire into 5 hat hydra for ZvP. It's best to find someone around your skill level that you can play with to improve.

Yeah definitely try laddering. You will lose a lot (it's an old game, most people are experienced), but it's a very rewarding experience if you get into it.
9 pool is not cheese. It is not as effective on the newer maps with long rush distance, but it is a very standard build. If you are just starting, I think you should go with 9 pool vs zerg and protoss, and 12 hatch vs terran. They are safe builds with very few hard counter.
Lastly, Liquipedia's your friend, like he^ said.

Yea, the builds Wohmfg suggested are pretty good for a beginner to learn. You have to also work on some of your mechanics while learning those BO's though.
For example hotkeying primarily hatcheries to hotkeys and using only a few hotkeys for units are good things to practice. Also box click attacking for large amounts of units is tough.
Can't expect to do well on the ladder without some significant practice though, so it's up to you whether or not you want to try to learn it because BO's alone will not cut it at all in BW. You have to execute them well and also be able to follow up on it.
Good luck!

Good choice playing the best game ever made and father to SC2.

Dont 9 pool zvt. Just 12 hatch.

congrats dude once you start watching pros while you play you'll be itching to get that shuttle play (or muta abuse) under your own fingers!! BW forever

Nice, hoping to see you on iCCup, maybe we can get a game going sometime

i would 12 hatch as well, but you won't be able to muta micro for a long time (there are maps to prac it on tho) so get builds other than that, even though it's the standard

Hehe, was about time! GL on your career in the most competitive game ever!

What you talking about? I won't play the multiplayer as much as I did with Brood War. XD

Question, how do I get Brood War to be on window mode? :/
|
Download ICCup Antihack Launcher, should have the option for window mode.

You should've bought the game at amazon.com. Always check other stores before buying it at the game maker's store. The maker usually charges more in my experience. I got mine for like $8.
Also, $15 is pricey? o.O Try looking at liquipedia for basic builds . Overpool is what most infested people I know use.

Hmm... the battlechest box here costs like 25-30 dollars. Kinda odd for a game as old as SC

Hmmm... didn't know they sell a downloadable version of SC on Amazon.
