what's so good about cyanogen that makes it better than other roms? its features don't really want me to sway away from cognition.

Its developers are just ridiculously consistent and timely with updates. Also, you really don't like its features? :O Their changelogs are amazingly long and it comes with an insane number of features, though~
Also, it is very stable and is generally considered the gold standard of rooted ROMs afaik
CM7 also has a theme changer application with which you can change basic theme elements almost instantaneously and without having to reboot etc
Get your phone rooted as soon as possible though! :D

I mean, it all comes down to how much you care. There are a lot of ridiculously awesome sites and you can very significantly mod your phone, but it does take a while.
|
im using lite'ning rom currently and is very satisfied with it. im very confused with all those roms kernel and modem stuff so i guess i'd better just stick with the current thing lol

I'm not sure if this qualifies as modding (I have not rooted my sgs2) but here's what my homescreens look like:
+ Show Spoiler [more screenshots] +
Apps used:
Launcher Pro Plus: best launcher out of all the ones I've tried for sgs2. Zero transition lag, very smooth and costumizable, nice looking widgets in the paid version (i.e. the calendar widget I use). It's also nice to be able to customize the dock, can also swipe between 3 different docks just like homescreens.
Custom Launcher Icons: Best icon modding app I could find. Used it to change all icons to the glowing white ones and to change or remove the app titles
BobClockD3: Clock widget on 1st homescreen, looks simple and elegant
SiMi Folder Pro: Used it to customize the folders to match my glowing white icons
On/off widgets: convenient widgets to quickly turn on/off stuff like wifi or change brightness on the fly
Uh and a lot of other apps to replace the standard ones. Most notably Quick Pic (gallery), Power Amp Pro (media player), Daum Maps (instead of google maps) and smart keyboard pro (awesome keyboard).

wow, launcher pro was so neat. i actually decided to buy it because it is damn good (and i wanted to use the calendar widget!)
as of my rom, still using cognition... only problem i find is that i can't find a rom that combines the features of the multiple ones out there.
|
GTR, Y U NO USE IU WALLPAPER? Galaxy S II is IU stuff!
Also, could anyone explain to me what the modding does to the Galaxy S II? Does it void any warranties because it's considered jailbreaking? I'm considering it for my next phone (IU + Stork (for the tablet) endorsement = WIN), and I'm considering whether to get it then have it modded.
|
You can usually flash your phone back to stock to avoid all that voiding warranty stuff.
|
currently im using Lite'ning Rom v6.0 XXKH1 for my GS2, works great so far

I compared both and launcher pro performed better imo on the sgs2, might have changed with recent version though don't know.

The above is a link to a script called "V6 Supercharger."
It essentially is a ram manager and replaces the need for any task killing (like ATK) and it will speed up your phone. It worked extremely well on my EVO, I was surprised o:
I can't speak for what roms would work on yours as I'm using an EVO specific rom ( EVOlvedROM r3chargeD)
However, my time on CM7 was fine, its a good AOSP rom/probably the best in terms of speed and stability. But again, different phone so who knows o:

Still waiting for a Samsung-made 4G LTE, 4.5" SAMOLED HD, dual-core 1.5 gHz or quad-core, 1GB+ DDR2 RAM phone wahaha.
|
I'm using a HTC Incredible (the first one) and recently moved over to CM7 and I love it. Their update rate is pretty impressive and they have a very full feature list. It also supported native themes which is really nice. (lets you change the general look and appearance of most system things quickly and all at once).
I also heard that Samsung hired the original developer of Cyanogen to work for them on their phone software. So that is an encouraging sign for those of you still on the original Samsung software.

yo quick question
i have samsung galaxy s2, unmodded, and found a small problem today.
so i go to contacts, then swipe left on one of my contacts to go to messaging. then i get the choice of using Messagine (SMS) or Whatsapp to message that contact. but choosing Whatsapp doesn't do anything at all, just jumps me back to the contact list. anyone else have this problem?
anyone have this problem ? : ( using litening now but still doesn't work (swpie left for whatsapp instaed of messaging)
also probably not gonna be bothered to try CM7 for SGS2 since its nightlies still and not stable yet
i'm interested in getting MIUI though, looks so nice :3

Dude, you should totally flash your phone with a nice rom, I got the HK version of the SGS2 and the default rom was horrible, had a lot of useless applications I couldn't remove, and battery was drained so fast.
I installed Lite'ning rom, it's super easy, super fast, and my battery lasts twice as long.
Then I added Go Launcher, and the phone is just perfect now.

Cyanogen mod is so hard to install compared to Litening. Took me a few hours to make it work properly on my wife Optimus 2x. Litening for SGS is the total opposite. 1. Download ROM and flashing tool 2. Plug cable and open the flashing tool. 3. Press OK. You have a new awesome ROM and the phone is automatically rooted.
|
is litening for all of the SGS? (captivate/fascinate/infuse etc). A quick google leads me to believe its only for the SGS2 that just came out.

^^^^ No I haven't. I don't know if it's my rom, but basically everytime I have to choose between applications to perform something, I have that "set as default" checkbox to make sure it never asks me again which application to use to perform the action. It looks that your messaging app doesn't work at all.
But seriously, flash your phone, it's safe, and it makes everything so much better. You won't regret it.

3 days, but I disable wifi as soon as I stop using it. I don't use any widget. The most energy consuming app is my SNES emulator. Playing a few hours uses half the battery.

If I don't play Chrono Trigger and only use the phone for calls / texts / emails it even lasts over 4 days. I'm using Litening 2.2 with XXKG1 kernel.

I've also just bought this phone. Im also looking for some tips and tricks for the phone. I have no experience in rooting and rom's. What does it actually do ?
Rooting is unlocking acces to everything on the phone right ? And after its rooted you can instal different roms ? A rom is like some kind of operating system ?
|
Hong Kong20321 Posts
taken from xda forums:
- "A ROM" is like "a car" nothing in specific but a body, wheels, engine, and paint. a general standard vehicle.
- "Each ROM" or each developer is like an auto maker. Each has their own style, options, focus and customer base. Some are luxury, others economy and some are fully loaded! Some are fully packed and heavy and others are base models and very light. You get to get to choose what you like or need, and for once "price is no object" (donating is appreciated) But you almost always get a whole car!
- "Framework" or "Build" - is like the frame of a car, you cant put SUV parts in a Honda. It just won't work unless you rebuild from scratch (and if you can do that, you would laugh at this analogy!) Parts / Kernels / Mods must be compatible with that framework and that framework must be compatible with your phone.
- "Rooting" or getting a "rooted ROM" is like getting the keys and permission to change ANYTHING in your car! But you dont have a warranty anymore!
- "The Kernel" is like the engine and power systems, it is the "software" engine, it does work and ties all the components together. And engines can be upgraded and tuned up for performance or down for economy!
- The theme is like the paint job. pure looks and enjoyment!
- Other dialers, meta-morphs, mods ect are all after market fun changes, once again only looks not usually any more function.
- The launcher (no rooting or romming needed) is alot like your interior, its the seat you sit in and the controls you touch 75% of the time, until you dig through your glove box or fuse box (back to rom)
tips for modding.. just remember to backup all your files and stuff before you do anything just in case there's a million guides on xda forums on how to do everything

So i'm looking at picking up a galaxy infused next week and i've been looking at XDA builds to flash onto it. Do any of you out there have a preference. I'm sitting on the fence between serendipity and infused right now but i'm paranoid about some gingerbread instabilities.
I also have a question regarding the kernal and flashing new ROMS. Upgrading and switching versions of ROMS. Does the data onboard the phone get wiped? (images, videos etc). I understand i'm supposed to reboot into recovery and flash a zip file, but the last time it seemed only the apps were deleted?
|
I only have Galaxy S I and I've been super lazy. I might come back to this thread to steal some ideas once I get inspired.

hmmh.. for litening ROM at least, it didn't require me to do a full data reset and cache wipe, but for CyanogenMod7 the instructions require you to. litening was really simple, just set Phone to USB Debug mode (remember to do this if you're flashing!), downloaded the files from Odin, then reboot and it was all done!
i've only been reading about SGS2 ROMs, so can't help you with choosing between them
btw, this is what my phone looks like first pic is when i first started really flashing roms and downloaded GOLauncher etc, so i went a bit overboard lol. then next day i decided to use a more minimalistic look. getting a bit obsessed with customizing my phone really.
Also, ran another overnight standby test. this time i disabled some of my facebook (friendcaster) periodic polling update settings, signed out of GTalk and the rest were the same. last night my battery went down about 1% per hour as opposed to 3% the previous night. not sure if its just the change of fb and gtalk settings or if the new kernel i installed really works that much better o_o
|
I just bought a HTC Inspire 4G.
I loaded Android Revolution 5.2.3 ROM, and shit went crazy. Rebooting like all the time for no reason, and bootloops one day. Scared the shit out of me, but the battery life was great LOL.
Just started using CoreDroid. Lets see how it goes.
|
My infused just came in today and it is honestly a beauty. The 4.5" AMOLED is really of its own class. Extremely light weight so its very comfortable when using it.
Currently running on the latest build of Serendipity7 with bedwa's custom kernal with voodoo sound and lagfix <3 (supercurio's too amazing). Overclocked to 1.6ghz and undervolted for battery performance~ also drugged up with samsung adrenaline shot (noticeable difference in responsiveness).

It works well on every chinese operator. I strongly recommend you to flash the ROM as it comes with shitty useless applications that you can't uninstall. That Samsung ROM modified by the chinese is garbage.
No idea if it works in the US but it should as it's using 3G.

I got a SGS2 from PCCW. Any clue what the hardware is like on these?
|
Really freaking fast?
I chose my infuse over the SGS2 because the SGS2 didn't offer much over the infuse to me for the extra 200$. It should be a dual core 1.2ghz processor. It uses the yamaha chip for its sound processing so its a downgrade from the wolfson DAC used on the captivate + infuse. The screen is 4.3? tiny tiny bit smaller than the infuse. for everyday tasks, it doesn't really offer much advantage unless you're doing a lot of word processing, or 3D heavy applications.
GTG/mikeymike have switched over the SGS2 for a week or two and started developping for it so you can expect some pretty sexy ROMS rolling out for it.

seems weird that CM7 would lock up on launcher pro. From what i gather, the MIUI port on the infuse that i'm running is using the same CM7 kernal from the GS2 development team but its fine over here. Granted i found the traditional launchers too boring so i opted for launcher7 <3

Wow that looks amazing. I just got My S2 recently and I have no idea how to mod it. How did you get that theme / screenshot?
Any info would be helpful. Thank you!

You have to install MIUI to get that. look into flashing instructions for the ROM

Is this "rooting" your phone? As I just got it, I'm a bit nervous about voiding my warranty. Thanks btw.

I'd like to ask one more question. I've reviewed a few guides on how to root my S2, but they all refer to downloading ROM's to the external Memory card. Unfortunately I don't have one at this time... should I purchase one before proceeding? Is it safe to "flash" a ROM that is installed in my phone's storage? Thanks x_x

MIUI is too iphonish for me : I have checkrom revolution 2.0 with the latest siyah kernel and it works like a charm.

I'm brand new to Android. All the Sprint crap on my S2 was bugging me so I decided to look into modding. After a few hours of work, I got the phone rooted, CWM manager installed, and Cognition flashed. BUT now my phone is really laggy, force closes everywhere, no phone service,etc.. My home button doesn't seem to work at all, so I can't select anything at CWM Recovery. The phone settings say kernel nim 2.1.3+ and Cognition S2 V1.6 are installed...
What have I done wrong? How can I fix this? Thanks.
LOL wow I've bricked my phone. I used to think I was a smart guy. Searching XDA gives me this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1334632&highlight=bricked So I'm out of luck. The phone is a day old, so Sprint may be able to help me. Otherwise I'm looking at a $50 repair from these people: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-epic-4g-touch-jtag-brick-repair/
Man I'm stupid.

For some reason, I tried using that Taeyeon pic for my wallpaper, but my Optimus always makes me scale it down/crop it instead of showing the whole pic. if i rescale it on the comp and lower dimensions, then its all blurry. (((((

It turns on... and it doesn't. The phone itself is definitely salvageable, but you need to right tools and software to take the phone apart and reprogram the IC's directly (which is what that mobiletech website is offering). I took it to an official repair place, and they said because the phone is so new, they'll just replace it. I just have to wait for the store to get more stock in. A few days at most.
Until then, I'll just eat this humble pie.

Install Cognition 1.5.1, I also had slowness problems with 1.6, but thankfully I backed up my old installation of 1.5.1.
Although that being said, a new release called Cognition 777 has been released.

Been a little bit of a flash-a-holic lately trying out lots of the JVT hellraiser based roms that got ported over from the captivate. While they're amazing and i thoroughly enjoy samsung based roms, i don't know why they can't sort out their music library core. It seems to constantly misread ID3 tags on my music which prompted me to return to CM7. Decided to go with traditional home screen setup compared to the WP7 setup i've been using over the past year, might go back to it at a later date when i'm bored again

Put CM7 on my SGS last weekend. I never cared about modding it before. How wrong I was, performance and battery life improvements alone are insane. I also used to think I had simply no data connection on the subway commute. Turns out it was just the stupid Samsung firmware that messed up with the spotty connection - with CM7 I have constant internet where the SGS used to fail before.
I am truly amazed what CM7 gets out of this device still.

Lucky that proleague app reminded me of this thread. I just more-or-less completed my new desktop. I'm not entirely happy with it, particularly this screen:
I quite like the style of the icon pack as a whole, but the specific icons suited to the music/movie aren't that great. I think it also looks a bit empty. Anyone got any ideas?
For ref/showing-off these as the default and leftmost screens: + Show Spoiler +
It's a pity that amazing aix weather widget doesn't really fit into the style either.

sigh, i think my mini-usb port on my phone is busted. will charge but won't recognise phone on my computer. tried everything from reinstalling drivers, kies to using a toothbrush to clean it.

my friend had that same problem, she ..exposed her phone to a lot of moisture /humidity and it was totally screwed for a while. i had never heard of this problem before ( it started spazzing and going into MTP mode and showing the dockscreen etc one day) and i thought it was just a software problem so i was like NP gimme ur phone for the night and ill fix it EZ. then turns out it was hardware lol . it still detected Odin though, so that was interesting. anyawy i had rooted it and everything but then since we couldn't fix it she wanted to bring it to the service centre to fix. so i had to unroot it etc , bought a USB jig.
a few days later, when she brought her phone to hte service centre.....
it worked perfectly again -_-
not sure whether your phone is having the same type of problem though , gtr.

Is there any sound when you plug it in to your computer?
edit: you should try these steps, worked for me when my computer don't recognise my phone.
1. Either install latest Kies OR just install compatible USB drivers 2. Before connecting the phone, open the keypad and dial *#7284# you will see a menu for UART and USB. 3. Under USB, select PDA. If PDA is already selected, select MODEM and then back to PDA 4. Don't worry about USB debugging or anything, just connect your phone to the PC Everything will work as it is intended to whether you use Kies, no Kies or just Mass storage

Just got a SGS2, couple questions.
Do I need to install a custom ROM to change the theme of the phone?
Is it 1 "theme" per ROM?
What is that windows phone 7 looking theme I saw earlier.
What are the benefits of rooting the phone?
Are there any better apps for music/video/camera in the market place? Or are the preinstalled ones the best?
Thanks fellas.

Thanks fellas. I have Go Launcher and it allows you to change themes, also other launchers will do, they also have a lot themes floating on Android Market. I'm not modded so I don't know about how it specifically works with ROMs but I'd still recommend a launcher on top if you like pretties (WP7 I have no idea) Rooting gives you permission to do stuff like overclock underclock modify stuff locked down by Samsung, install apps that require root, install custom ROMs and generally be a badass. Which I've also yet to do but I will when I get the time. There seems to be a ton of literature on it around the web. Music: Songbird, Winamp I've used, are good and offer more options and better syncing than default, apparently DoubleTwist is also good, and some good Chinese apps too like Kugou which allows you to download music, it's legal in China, sort of. Camera is good by default, Camera360 adds extras to make it more fun and artsy but I don't see any actual camera improvements.

In ICS, you hold volume down and power button to take a screenshot. With the Galaxy S2, you hold home button and power button to take a screenshot. For other phones, I have no clue.

you see next to the image there's a thing that says 'links to share this image' one of them gives a DIRECT LINK
so..
for example instead of ending in a / the link should end in .jpg. because we want to directly go to the image and not the imageshack image display site.

that's pretty sexy, which launcher are you using there? the iphone styled folder is appealing ._.

Rooted my phone, flashed CM, then realised the Chinese market is gimped and lots of good apps aren't there. Realised I don't have time on a Thursday to set a brand new ROM properly so flashed back to TouchWiz.
But I got a bunch of root-only apps and they are pretty great, also looks fine enough with Go Launcher. Will be trying again with MarketEnabler this weekend tho, I'm bored

Erm I followed the instructions on the CM wiki and there were no Maps or GMail in the package I downloaded, so that was that for attempt number 1.
Just tried it again, still no Maps or Gmail but with MarketEnabler but I can at least download them. So no problems there anymore.

The official ICS update has been deployed for SGS2 in Korea.
My first impression is that the new lock screen looks awesome but other than that I'm mostly annoyed by little things. The new font doesn't look pretty and distorts the look of some websites and I can't choose the old one anymore. Also scrolling feels weird with the new stock browser, I don't seem to be able to scroll vertically and horizontally at the same time anymore.
Also my trusty launcher pro doesn't work anymore Switched to GO Launcher for the time being. GO Launcher doesn't let me change my icons with Droidicon though for some reason, anyone know why?

Customization, longer battery life (downclock CPU, better ROMs, etc), better responsiveness / faster (since you don't have garbage Touchwiz), more memory / less apps (since you can delete the garbage that the carrier installs on the phone), and there's probably some other benefits I can't think of.
edit: oh I forgot the most important thing, you don't have to wait on stupid carriers to push an OS update.
