Hello, simple question I wonder if anyone can help.
I've started learning about stocks/finance recently and I've been looking at charts and statistics etc.
However, I wonder how I can access the financial statistics from the past. For example, If I want to look at the P/E of Amazon back in 2007 or something.
Thanks!

Err, don't invest any money yet! You're way too green!
Anyways, just check a site like yahoo finance and backtrack the stock as long as you'd like /as is applicable. With stocks like AMZN you can definitely find stats on the big sites.

Well on yahoo finance I can see historical prices but I don't know where to go to see historical other statistics.

Yahoo Finance and Google Finance
Or you can go on the official SEC site, look at financial reports, and calculate it yourself.

Yeah, google finance or yahoo finance work well for this. Usually have monthly, quarterly, bi, and annual stats on each stock with their charts... check out stockcharts.com for deeper analysis as well. And if your dealing with pink and OTC's be careful, they definitely require a fair share of due diligence. Hit up the forums on iHub as well and see what the investing community is saying...

Hey guys thanks for responding but could somebody just directly point out where to get the information? I've used yahoo finance before but I don't see where the info is (I could be blind though).
Like here is the website for amazon: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=AMZN If you click on key statistics tab, you get: http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=AMZN Key Statistics
What I'd like is to be able to view the key statistics page for different points of time, such as 2007. My general intent is to look at historical statistics for companies that would later be successful (or unsuccessful) to get some idea of how those stats play into growth. I know I can go look at the financial reports and do the calculations myself but it'd be preferable not to have to.
As for experience, I've only played with stocks for about a year (last year) and made a few thousand dollars. However mostly what I did was just think about good picks based on news/personal knowledge and didn't look at balance sheets very much.

Use morningstar.com, it gives you price and volume at specific dates. What other statistics are you looking for? http://quote.morningstar.com/stock/s.aspx?t=AMZN
Move around the scroll at the bottom of the chart to view other dates, also the zoom at the top.
If you want more in-depth analysis from a while back, I think you need a specialized program. I can access it work, but not on my home computer.

If you are a university student, you can probably access the better academic databases such as CRSP, datastream, and Compustat. Otherwise, yahoo finance and morningstar are the best resources out there.

@oneother well for example suppose I want to see the Profit Margin or the Operating Cash Flow.
like said before, I could dig into old financial reports and SEC filings but that'd be more tedious than just looking at a nice table. If anyone knows of programs that let me do this it'd be cool too.
