So after working like 8 hours I pleasantly came home and got on Ventrilo to hear my "guild" (friends from various places who play the same game together? Idk, met playing WoW, a couple of years later still buds) talking about plans for the 3 of them to fly down (2 live in Canada, one in New York) in October to attend MLG Orlando, only 2 hours away from my town.
After an hour or two of planning, we've decided that we're all going to be skipping college classes, spending tons of money we don't really have and going to live the weekend kinda by the seat of our pants. Honestly I cannot wait for it because I know that those events are the best; the times where we have a general idea of what's going to happen but mainly it will be figure-it-out-as-we-go.
I also decided that I can't pass up the opportunity - I'm going to compete. One of my "guildies" said something that stuck with me: "Dude, you'll be taking up a spot that maybe a pro player will need or something, don't be a dick now".
SCREW THAT
I may be a lowly diamond Zerg player who curses at any and all Protosses that I come across, but I have an equal right to compete in the Open bracket... that's why it's called what it is. I may bring my microsoft keyboard and mouse to the competition and lose 20 minutes later, but damn, my name is on that competitors list, my replays will be released and while I may get no recognition, I will be there and I will play.
ANYWAY
I guess I'm posting because I want advice. We're probably going to camp Friday night and get a cheap motel Saturday night, and because we live close enough we'll have transportation around the city. I'm from Florida so I know Orlando and stuff, so that's not really going to be a problem.
I guess I want to know some of the little things that people have learned from LANs that they didn't really know before. What are some essential things to bring? What should I be leaning towards doing first once I get there? What's the most cost effective way to go about the whole weekend?
I wanna hear some stories and such!

"SCREW THAT" made me LOL.
If I go to Orlando we can bitch about how us nobodies lost to somebodies in the open bracket. Well, I'm protoss, so you'll probably break my nose and make a rude comment about force fields, though.
Either way, that sounds like a great way to spend the weekend.

things i learned:
Camera flashes kinda distract you write down your mouse speeds if you use batteries for anything, bring extra batteries mouse, keyboard, mousepad, headphones dont put a drink on the table If you want a seat, get there early and dont pee bring a sharpie if you want something signed.

Ok heres what you do:
1. Buy a player pass ASAP 2. Wait for one of the aforementioned deserving Pros to not get one because they are lazy 3. Resell it for slightly higher 4. Profit.

I like your dedication . Good luck at the MLG!

Write down all your settings on a flash card or something.

And as long as you don't like, cannon rush me or mass void rays or just build all the sentries, your nose is fine But if you do go make sure to tell me, it'd be cool to hang out with some TLers!

Great advice, thanks! I'll make sure to keep these in mind

I'm gonna be competing at MLG Orlando as well! And I'm Protoss. Wanna practice together? Cause I suck vs zerg

I'm super excited to have an MLG so close to home! Wondering if I should buy the competitors pass or just the spectators. I could very well hit Platinum before the event, but that's cannon fodder compared to the level of players competing. $25 spectator is a steal and by the description, it only limits your ability to play at the event.
