Hi guys,

I'm sorry to dissapoint you but I don't claim to have the answer to that question. Although I must've been doing something right in the past couple of days. Seeing as i upped my APM from 75 to 110 already!

As I mentioned in my first post I made a race-switch and have loads of free time to practice. I don't want to mindlessly ladder and get to masters slow as hell. No. I wanna STOMP my way to masters.

Like a boss.

Because you only need 2 things to play starcraft: the special tactics and nimble fingers, there are only 2 things i need to focus on:

special tactics for now:
+ Show Spoiler +
PvZ

3 gate expand
1 gate expand => stargate
4 gate
DT expand

PvP

4 gate
3 gate robo

PvT

2 gate stalker pressure expand
1 gate expand
3 gate expand
2 gate robo expand
3 gate stargate all in

to do:

PvZ

FFE
7 gate blink stalker
2 gate pressure (I saw tyler doing a great zealot pressure build on shakuras, I definetely need to steal that one)

PvP

stargate + blink builds

PvT

DT builds

During daytime I play and at night I follow some streams to check out how the pro's do it.

To get my fingers more agile I do 3 things:
- stretch a little (need to get to ctrl + 8 more easily)
- play games and force myself to spam (every gamer is a bit lazy)
- open up notepad and start spamming away

I think the key to improving here is what do you spam. In notepad I started with making different kinds of buildings and now I mix in some combo's like making a collosus and chrono boosting it. When I play I make sure I use the same fingers as the ones I decided to use in notepad.

At the start of a game I repeatedly ctrl+1-7 my units in different order and double tap the numbers. It's a lot harder than 121212121212121212 and IMO a lot more useful. Being able to control group and build stuff faster frees up time to do other things, maybe... micro?

Doing this stuff right is double important: you'll be faster and you will make less mistakes. Binding stuff wrong messes everything up, a lot.

I also recently switched F1 with space and made F1 F2 F3 F4 binds for screens. Does anyone have a system i could borrow? I feel like they will come in handy later (proxy pylons etc) and changing things is always harder than learning it right from the beginning.

TL;DR notepadding my way to masters

Thats a great way to improve your apm.
That will help you a lot.
But you also have to make a colosus very fast at the right time.
So don't focus too much on the amount of time it takes you to make a colosus.
But more on when the colosus must be made.
BW pros training sc2 is like kiss making a dub step album.

haha just need some javagames to increase your mouse accuracy and you're set x)

Seriously, I don't believe in ultra fast improvement. From personal experiences I can say that improvement and the the overall betterment of ones play is a slow but steady process.

As someone who started out in gold and grinded trough a ton of laddergames on daily basis just to improve and slowly push up into masters it kinda annoys me that you think getting to masters is so easy that you can stomp your way there "like a boss" and with ease.

I admire you for the incentive to start taking SC2 serious enough and integrating serious practice but don't underestimate how complex of a game SC2 can be. Just "special tactics" and "nimble fingers" might bring you to high-Plat / low Diamond level but it ends there.

*1 It is good to have a variety of builds like you do, but I would advice you to actually train on of them as a "fall back" build that is save and can be applied against every opponent of a certain race, regardless of rank. For BoX it is important to mix up your play an become unpredictable but if you play ladder your safest way would be to stay with 1 or max. 2 builds (depends on map) that are safe and solid. (Surviving trough cheese/timings as well as long macro games)

*2 Playing during daytime and watching at night? I hope you do sleep sometimes and get fresh air. There is a limit on how much time spend is good for progress and what amount of it is detrimental for your health. The best way to go about it is to have a fixed schedule that also incorporates normal sleeptimes and going out of the house. To "stomp like a boss" is dependent on your condition and living an unhealthy life makes you play worse than you would think.

*3 Now to your nimble fingers... I do like the stretches and habits that make the access to keys far away from your typical hand position possible but just randomly open up notepad and spam like no tomorrow? There is a difference between senseless and useful APM. Even if you see some pros using 123123123 like crazy, thats to "hold" the fingers warm and make them "action ready". This doesn't apply to someone who has not trained the muscle memory of certain "keystrokes" enough. If you haven't grinded out the same key-combos for games on end than it does not matter if your fingers are "warm". (I feel like I lack the vocabulary to express myself...).

To make the advice a bit clearer :
- mechanics improve trough a shitload of games were you steadily try to make every action fast and precise without to much deadweight. There simply is no miraculous way to improve your mechanics superfast (certainly no secret korean training or a shady potion of skill). All you need is to play, play and play more. Eventually if you get every action precise enough you can start speed up the whole thing.

I guess what I try to say is that speed without precision or sense is useless. Darkforce once said a nice thing about that. (I can't recite it correctly but the gist of it was : APM is the result of experience and to know what you do, before you actually do it.) Again that means you need to grind a ton of games to gain the necessary experience to actually "predict" how the game will unfold and to move your fingers accordingly.

*4 Last advice for the night : Do not under any circumstance neglect your mouse accuracy. You fast keyboardstrokes won't win you the game. A lot depends on how fast and precise you can work with your mouse and often it can save you a lot of work and make time for other things.

What you need to improve to get into masters/grandmaster or whatever league you're aiming for is a good balanced package of Speed, Accuracy, experience, builds and decision making. All things that you cant get super fast but trough hard practice.

I guess I'm ranting... anyway good luck on your way to masters (:

Honestly, I think you're on the right path but just keep in mind that this is sc2 and nimble fingers don't really matter that much as it is not very APM intensive. Also the screen binds, I usually set them to my expos so I quickly can go to them (I'm terran so I all my CC:s on one hotkey for fast muling and such)
But don't listen to me when it comes to screen binds, I don't play sc2 much and the screen bindings I'm using are the ones I use in BW.
BW for life !

Sheesh, that guy nailed it.

There is no real fast track to Masters, nor should there be. You have to be a pretty solid player to get to that level, and there is more than A build or nimble fingers involved to get you there. APM is an alright place to start… I suppose, but I would encourage you to focus on macro first and foremost. Then I would focus on learning timings for your match ups (timings for both you and your opponent) and decision making, and then lastly on increasing speed and multitasking. You will find that your speed will naturally increase as you play more, so your time focusing on speed now is not necessary.

Your core fundamentals are going to create a better platform for improvement than speed.

I have found this true for me, and I hope it can help you out as well.
(I started SC2 a month after its release, and have gone from Bronze 98 to Diamond 25 [as of right now]. It's not quite Masters just yet, but give me another month or two and I am sure I'll have it ;D )

This. Scribbling notes on Raynor's face is fun, and I feel like a total boss doing it.

The "keybinding wrong messes it up" last like 50 games I can remember, I fucking lost every game I messed up to much with the keybindings. Specially the overseer, can't tell you how many times I thought I keybinded it and then sent it away on some mission, and when the banshee's flie in. The overseers is nowhere to be found at all.....

But nice that you are making progress. If you keep that attitude/spirit up and keep playing you'll reach masters really soon
