Games with weapons that level up?

I was testing out spiral knights today when I noticed that the gear you equip to your character can level up. It doesn't seem to interesting so far but I do remember having a lot of fun with the Secret of Mana and Ratchet and Clank weapon leveling systems.

Can anybody point me to some other games that use weapon leveling mechanics and maybe a brief idea of what made the game fun/interesting/not interesting?

Cave Story. Great 2d platformer/rpg, argued to be the best free game ever. you won't regret

This just reminds me about the horrible legendary weapons of lord of the rings online which gain experience with every kill, but other than that i can't think of the name of any other game with leveling weapons (though iirc i played a few of those)

It's imho a silly idea anyways as in reality weapons get worse by using them, not better. Also this game design often forces you to grind (depending on the game) to level up your weapons if you change them later.

Drakengard for Playstation 2. You need to kill enemies to do so, so it's a lot of grinding. It's a pretty cool game, you have a dragon as well which will level up too and so, killing is a lot easier. You can somewhat compare the game to Dynasty Warriors.

Hmm.

I remember Planescape Torment had a character, Dak'kon whose sword leveled as he did. Which was nifty cuz it was the only weapon he could wield. But Torment wasn't much about maximising character potential in battle, more the story elements, so perhaps not the best.

FFII and some FFs have the weapon levelling systems, e.g. you use a certain weapon or spell enough times and it levels up, becoming stronger (obviously).

For a non-RPG, Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory was an fps where you levelled up skills and your weapons got better. E.g. iirc there was a light weapon skill to level up, sensory, and probably 2 others.

I do remember playing drakengard now! That was worth playing just for the weird as all hell alternate endings. I though it was really neat how every weapon had a different magic you could cast if it was equipped and would change shape as you leveled it.

Secret of Mana has weapon leveling, basically when you leveled up a skill you get a new charge up attack. For instance, if you have a sword level 0 you have a standard slash, level 1 is a second long charge that is a lunge attack. Level 2 is a 2 second long charge that is an AoE attack, and it goes on and on up to level 8, for like 9 different weapons. Awesome game!
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

Disgaea for ps2/psp/ps3 has a cool item lvl system where you enter the actual item you want to level up and battle through floors until you're satisfied/can't go any further.

I (can barely) remember this game with Zero/Megaman in which the Z-saber/X-buster level up. I think it was on the GBA.

Although I didn't like the game very much. FF13's weapon system was extremely well done. the change in experience depending on what you used to upgrade the weapon was well thought out. Albeit a little bit random.

I don't recall borderlands having weapons themselves level. Wasn't it just a character based level of competency with weapon types?

Wasn't sure on FFXIII since I haven't heard the best impressions but since it's popped up twice I should have a look.

Ninja Gaiden is a very cool game but the weapon level up system there seems like it's just a gateway system for the higher grade combo's like the izuna drop.

Disgaea: The grindfest of all grindfests. I actually really like the series just because of how ridiculous it gets. If you are a perfectionist/completist, get ready to spend a lot of time on this game. To give you a frame of reference, I spent over 200 hours on Disgaea 2, and I was nowhere near close to having everything in the game.

FF2, as was mentioned, has a leveling system based on how much you use weapons/whatever, but I didn't think it was too great.

I know Dead Space has a weapon leveling/powering up system.

I realize these games may not have the same kind of "leveling up" as what you mentioned in the OP, but I think that there is enough emphasis on upgrading your weapons to make these relevant:

Final Fantasy 2 (stats on your characters - not your weapons - regarding weapon proficiency)
Some people already gave their reasons. I'm just going to add that it is still my favourite Final Fantasy of all time (tied with FF5). Great characters, cool stat system, decent story.

Final Fantasy 9
You can forge old weapons into new ones. Since there are opportunities for weapon/armor synthesis in almost every major city, I'd say that it's a main point of the game. My favourite thing about it is that it makes holding onto your old equipment worthwhile.

Tales of Symphonia
Of all the Tales games I've played, I think I did the most weapon customization in this one. Works similar to FF9. This is absolutely my favourite JRPG of all time. I think the best way to explain it is this: it's the FF7 of the Tales series.

Cave Story
Lovely free-to-play platformer/2D side-scroller. Very charming game with fun gameplay. Big emphasis on weapon upgrades, since that's really what will make or break it on the harder game paths.

Knights of the Old Republic
Let me start off by saying that even though this game is a dinosaur, I JUST started playing it this month and am really enjoying it. It took a little while to get used to the controls, even with my own custom hotkeys, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the game. Some great dialogues, decent item customization, and plenty of skills to choose from. The combat has a pretty steep learning curve though.

Dark Cloud 2 has only a pure leveling weapon effect. There is no level for the character, only the weapons that can change depending on what strengths (against certain types of monsters) you put into it and it evolves, changing its aesthetic form.

Really great game.

Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny

A sweet PS2 game. You kill enemies and collect their souls, which you can spend on leveling weapons. Each weapon had like 3 ranks if I remember correctly and changes every time you level (new moves, faster animations, better looks etc.)

I would highly recommend you check out Darksiders if you've got a system that can run it. It's a very fun, well made God-of-War style game. Your sword Chaoseater consumes the souls of enemies you kill and gains power over time (as well as your other two main weapons, mind you). You can also purchase different strikes and whatnot using more souls. Souls.

Souls.
