My thoughts regarding Duke Nukem Forever's so-called mediocrity would probably attribute back to the 3D Realms days of development. Broussard wanted to make the sequel to Duke the best game ever. In so doing, he forced down multiple ideas but lacked something to tie those ideas together and form a game of sheer quality. I would not blame Gearbox Software for releasing the game in that state all too much because all they did was finish it. Will I still buy DNF regardless of all the negative opinions of reviewers?
The answer to that question is: HELL YEAH! I may have seen my share of First Impressions and Reviews from multiple websites. Some say DNF is awesome, others say it's crap and other people say it's something in between. I expected as much regarding the game. I know that DNF will not live up to the hype by todays standards, especially with the format of shooters these days and all. Regardless, I made a promise to myself that I will buy Duke Nukem Forever, play it once and after I beaten the game, which will probably take 10 hours or less, the case and the disc shall be placed on a frame with the words: IT FINALLY HAPPENED!
The question is: which version should I take? I could go for the PC version however my computer couldn't even run the free access demo, and it will take me months before I can buy me a better PC. So, my only option for now has got to be the PS3 version.

The main thing above all else for me is the ego bar. Besides the crude humor and generally over the top atmosphere of the game, the number one reason I was interested was that this would go back to the 90s kill everything, guns blazing shooters.
the ego bar makes this a duck and cover. The two gun thing doesn't help either.
i think all the other shit ive seen/read about thus far is forgivable, but those two are sins.

Good attitude to have regarding an epic sequel. I don't think there was any format they could have had that would have appeased everybody. Just enjoy it. Laugh along. Then frame it. It did finally happen. Too bad its not so great tho.

With the format DNF has went through, I would hardly enjoy it at all. I always thought shooters like Halo and CoD were more fitting for something like that. I will buy the game just to say "I own it"

I actually just bought it today for the PS3 for Fathers Day. He used to play the original Duke Nukem games in the 90s, I have heard so many mixed reviews, alot of them calling it a pile of shit, some people who have played the old games say its a decent throwback to them. Oh well, guess I will find out if he likes it or not T_T

I played the game for half an hour, always thinking: "I hope this gets better soon.. I hope this gets better soon". It never did. I got bored to death and uninstalled.

I bought the PC version. Glad I did since I heard the console version struggles with lower framerate and looooong loading screens (up to 40 seconds while PC loads like 5 seconds tops).
In preparation of the game I played Duke3D and now that I've played DNF I'm not disappointed.
Sure there are things I don't really like about DNF: - Regenerating health - Can only carry 2 weapons at one time (apart from trip mines, pipe bombs) - Too many driving/turret sections for my taste
But I still love DNF and it just feels like a DN title.
Can't understand people who say the humor doesn't fit in modern times or the portrayal of women is bad.... I mean... what did those people expect?

I managed to get my hands on a copy and after playing the first few hours I will definitely be buying it this weekend. Despite all the terrible reviews it is getting, it is actually a really good game. It is obnoxiously stupid in a way that is very humorous to me (just like duke 3d), they graphics are very good (but dated) and most of all it is just plain fun. There is also a good mix of combat, puzzles, and platforming like in duke 3d though the levels don't give you as much freedom to explore. I was not too happy about the ego bar and the two weapon limit either as well, but it's still not that bad. The ego bar especially still allows plenty of run and gun because you can instantly refill it by getting an execution which encourages you to constantly be killing. I am playing on the hardest difficulty available (another one unlocks after you beat it I think) and I am doing run and gun the whole way. As someone who has little interest int he modern shooter, I am having a blast.
That said, I'm playing on PC and I've heard nothing but bad about the consoles versions. I believe the PS3 version is the better of the two but you will have to be prepared for some really long load times.

Hail to the king baby. =)
I actually liked DNF quite a lot. I spent a TON of time playing Duke3D and DukeDC though. The enemies/weapons/humor/environments/gameplay/bosses were spot on to the originals, in my opinion. I felt a taste of familiarity with each weapon/enemy especially. Felt just like I was fighting octobrains in Duke3D. =) There were even minor environmental details that were heeded to, like being able to turn random lightswitches on/off for no reason.
If they put a classic health system in, allowed me to carry more than 2 guns, and made the levels a little less linear (I prefer the old Duke style of openarea-->findkeycard-->openarea), It'd be an A+ for me. Other than those 3 things, I loved it.
edit: Also, in terms of all the load time complaints, I didn't really notice excessive loads on the PC version. I refuse to play FPS on consoles.

This game sucks, i got it and was hugely disappointed... extremely linear, long load times, 2 guns, flawed ego system... if you must buy it, get the pc version as it is slightly less awful

I am glad I have made the decision to not buy it. I would rather treasure the good memories I have of Duke Nukem 3d. Duke Nukem 3d was one of the first games I made a level in and played over the modem (FPS game). It is great they came out with a new one but, I just don't see it being as good as it would have been if I was younger.

Yeah, don't bother buying it if you think you will like it just because you liked the old ones. Duke is a shadow of its former self

Lulz, that and it's a first-person-shooter where you don't actually shoot that much.

People can't look at this for what it is... the gameplay is subpar, that's true. However, some review sites give it 3/10, which is disingenuous, IMO.
This game, while it isn't great, is very playable and cheesy as hell, which makes it funny. Might be worth 3/10 for a 12 year old who's used to good shooters and doesn't understand the jokes or all the references, but it's definitely worth 6 or 7 out of 10 - perhaps more if you're drunk.

Only reason why I'm not buying it. Or playing it. I think those systems should stay in Halo and it felt appropriate for games like CoD. But not this. It's like they didn't even think about the benefits of those systems and just shoehorned them in.
The execution system where it refills your health should have been developed more. It almost seems like that system would allow you to to continuously take on enemies.
I can think of way worse shooters though. DNF looks pretty average to me. Though from the videos I've seen, there some pretty amusing moments.

I think the reason it's graded so low is that it's not really...Dukey.
Duke Nukem in a nutshell:- Guns. Crazy guns
- One-liners
- Aliens
- Tits
GOAT, lawl.
Anyhow.
previous Duke games weren't so...objective gameplay based. I want to load up Duke Nukem, throw money at strippers, and just go from point a to point b, all the while blasting the fuck outta aliens all the way there. There wasn't really a whole lot to do otherwise, and I think that's why it was good. It totally did what it was supposed to - encompass all action heroes all at once into a total alien ass-kicking machine. With lots of tits.
I think when you buy a Duke title, you expect this - and this game is probably the least similar to the other Duke games. Which is why it's getting the most flak.
Is it the worst game ever? No, certainly not. However, I don't think it's nearly as good as the other Duke games.
Also someone mentioned people being upset about the game's portrayal of women? LOL. That's like going to a strip club and being upset about the club's portrayal of women. Hahaha, that's the funniest thing I've heard all day...why buy Duke if you are going to be upset by the chicks?

Can't argue with that Torenhire

There's nothing wrong with regenerating health and limited guns (read: ammo) that isn't caused by the stipulation that "Halo did it, and Halo was a console game, and I don't like how limited console controls keep making PC game controls simpler, so therefore I don't like regenerating health and limited guns/ammo".
They're good mechanics. Regenerating health keeps you playing the game, rather than scurrying around like a rat looking for cheese (health packs) when you do something a little bit stupid. And if you do do something stupid, you die and have to try again. In the case of limited guns/ammo, shit, back in the 90s, I just ran around with my favourite weapon until I ran out of ammo, anyway. And whatever it was usually had scarce ammo around the place. Plus, you get to hold Trip Mines and Pipe Bombs in addition to your regular arsenal; two of the signature weapons of DN3D in the first place.
Half the reason FPS developers feel comfortable removing your ability to hold so many guns, thereby forcing you into having to conserve your ammunition (aim better = playing better = saving more ammo = less problems. I thought we hardcore gamers liked that in our games?), is because nobody used the damn things! Everyone picked one or two weapons they really liked, and the rest of the weapons were sitting at 100/100 ammo, collecting dust. Another thing people tend to forget is that in the 90s, even though you had a bunch of guns, there were usually only 3-4 types of ammo between them. Using one often meant precluding the use of another. (Machine Gun vs Bigger Machine Gun, Plasma Rifle vs Super Laser, Rocket Launcher vs Grenade Launcher, etc etc.)
|
The regen health thing is something I can tolerate to an extent. Though in general it makes the difficult significantly easy unless they can compensate for it if the enemy has really amazing AI.
As for the limitations in terms of what weapons I can hold, that is something I have little to no tolerance for unless it's on multiplayer. Limiting weapons in single player for me is insanely lame. Which is why I still consider the Half Life games to be my favorite shooters of all time. :D

The game is awesome and a big boot to the face of anyone who takes games too seriously (starcraft not withstanding)
