Recently, there has been a lot of talk about how brutal the GSL Code A is. Implied in these conversation are that there are many talented players in relegated in Code A or lower that can dominate if they scaled the climb into the Code S. The GSL Super Tournament, as the first of its kind, pit together a mesh of 64 Code S, A, and former Code A players, making it the perfect battleground to testing this hypothesis.

Trivia

  • 32 current Code S and 15 current Code A players are participant of the GSL Super Tournament. (P)Nuts is the only player in the current Code S/A lineup that fails to obtain sufficient points to qualify for the GSL ST. Of the 17 players not in either Code currently, 6 were former Code S players. In total, 47 of the 64 players participating are or have been a member of the Code S.
    + Show Spoiler +

    Original Code S - 10 of 17 remain.
MVP, anypro, Inca, MarineKingPrime, Tester, Hongun, Genius, FruitDealer, Ensnare, MC, Clide, Polt, Nestea, Nada, Kyrix, Zenio, Rain
    Promoted to Code S - 10 of 15 remain.
SuperNova, Keen, Violet, July, sC, LosiRa, Byun, HuK, Alicia, Alive, Top Killer, Virus, Bomber, CoCa
    Demoted from Code S - 5 of 15 remain.
Lyn, Check, TheWind, jookTo, Boxer, TheBest, san, Rainbow, Hyperdub, Leenock, Maka, LegalMind, Jinro, Choya, Vanvan.
    Non-Code S - 7 of 17 remain.
MMA, Yugioh, Ganzi, Squirtle, August, ButterflyEffect, ACE, Ryung, Moon, Revival, Cezanne, JJUN, Junwi, Creator, Min, Noblesse, Line

  • 17 of the current 32 Code S players were part of the original Code S lineup from the beginning of the year (MVP and Rain have dropped briefly into Code A). 7 of these 17 players (whom I label collectively as S - original Code S) exited the tournament in the ro64. As a group, they have a map record of 23 - 20.

MVP, MarineKingPrime, Tester, HongUn, Genius, Clide, Polt, Nestea, NaDa, Kyrix

  • Remaining 15 of the current 32 Code S players are promoted from Code A this year. Only 5 of the 15 players (whom I labeled collectively as P - promoted into Code S) dropped out at ro64. As a group, they have a map record of 23 - 13.

    July, Losira, Alive, Killer, CoCa

SuperNova, Keen, Violet, sC, Byun, Huk, Alicia, Top, Virus, BomBer

  • Corresponding to the promoted players, 15 players have been demoted from Code S, including (T)Lyn whom was promoted in January but dropped out this May. 10 members of this group (whom I labeled collectively as D) fell at ro64. As a group, they have a map record of 12 - 22.

Lyn, Check, TheWind, Boxer, san, Rainbow, Hyperdub, LegalMind, Jinro, Vanvan

  • 17 of the players participating in the Super Tournament never made it into Code S (collectively I label them as A). 10 of them have dropped out of ro64 with a group record of 18 - 21.

  • Of the four classifications of players identified above (Code S, Promoted Code S, Demoted Code S, Non-Code S), the Promoted Code S players performed the best by both numbers advanced and overall map record. On the other hand, non-Code S players suffer the most loses in their ranks, while demoted players had the worse map record.

  • Promoted Code S players have a winning record against all other classifications. Especially against demoted Code S players, whom they are 5-1 (10-3) against.

  • A special note about the current Code A players, 9 of which were demoted from Code S. Of this group, none of them made it out of ro64. In contrast, the other 5 Code A players in the Super Tournament have a 3-3 (7-6) record.

Inferences

  • Code S players whom advanced through the up-and-down matches perform slightly better than the original Code S players and significantly better than former Code S players. That means as a whole, the Code S skill level have increased.
  • The current Code S players are performing only slightly better than the non-Code S players. The worst performing group are demoted Code S players whom are still in Code A, so expect them to quickly drop off from GSL all together.
  • Code A players whom has yet to break into Code S performs surprisingly well, indicating there are certainly talent blocked by the up-and-down system.

Thank God and gunrun.

Yeah, I've always thought that the system really slows down those who are stuck in Code A, out of reach of the more lucrative prizes, but now you've provided some evidence for it.

Just found this; totally awesome. I know digging through the numbers to get an overall view like this can be a pain. Thanks for doing it for us
