There's an exchange going on between my friend and I where some advice is needed.
He has a job bussing at a restaurant in my city where all the rich people eat. He's going out of town for most of the month of June for a yearly visit to his relatives on the west coast. He's hooking me up with a part-time summer job there and I'm making sure the place is staffed (he's not too good at planning). Circumstances or not, he IS getting me a sweet job for somebody my age (I also lifeguard for minimum wage).
My family only has two cars, one of which my dad uses for work all day. So while my friend is gone, I want to rent his car so my family can have one. It's an old piece of crap mitsubishi which doesn't have AC or radio we call the red dragon.
I'd obv take care of gas. My question is, how much should I reimburse him for letting me borrow his car? Maybe not money, maybe take him out to dinner or something. I'm thinking gas, insurance, and a little more since I'm basically using it for a month. I just don't know how much a little more should be.
Second thing, I've never worked in the food service industry before. I've got a perfect crocodile smile and I know how to talk like I'm a big cat, so my minimal interactions with patrons is covered...unless you have warnings or experiences otherwise. I heard sore feet is a problem, what kind of shoes should I get?

You pay for gas and the insurance for the month. Treating him to a dinner when he gets back seems about right, it's not like he's lending you a Lambo so nothing too huge.

But I'm the kind of person who would first talk to him and be open about it. Make it really clear for him that you're really grateful and honestly willing to make it up to him. Usually people will just say "nah np". But depending on how you're relationship is and what type of person he is, maybe he'll actually come up with something viable that would make both of you happy. Maybe not at the time, but later.
And of course. You know him better than we do. So maybe think up of the things he does and could possibly help him. Maybe after a few days of casually pondering you come up with something cool.

You should cover other maintenance on the car too, maybe an oil change when you take it and when you return it. That + insurance and gas sounds fair to me.
Don't neglect socks when you're thinking about shoes for the restaurant job. Something that's thick but keeps your feet dry, like good hiking socks, can make a huge difference compared to some generic dress socks.

Honestly just talk to him about it, its better to just give him a set amount then try to guess and hope is he happy with it. I would say cover insurance gas and ask him if an extra 40 dollars would be fine or if he would rather have a dinner etc... I always find when people dance around the bush about certain things especially money, it never ends up that well.

Oil change is over the top IMO. Just hook him up with a few beers when he gets back.

Beers! I forgot lol that would be best and yeah oil change is over the top, it's not like its a car that needs heavy maintenance so driving like 2000km wouldn't really warrant an oil change.
