How did I achieve this minor miracle you ask? Quite simply really. I was going to buy it two weeks ago and then my car died. I parked it after doing some shopping and was going to run back out for one last thing but it refused to turn on. After cursing and poking around in the engine I figured out that my starter was bad. As getting it towed from my house to the Garage and getting it fixed their would have cost $400 minimum, I had the brilliant idea to buy the part and do the work myself, potentially saving myself a boatload.
Finding a bit of time on Sunday I thought I'd knock it out quickly and got all the tools I'd need. One hour and a bloody knuckle later and I loosened the three bolts holding the starter in and emerged triumphant, the starter in my hand. I got the replacement part after a short walk to my local parts shop and came back home to put it back in. How hard could it be, right? You just put the bolts back in the holes you took them out of, right? I wish.
Seven hours of laying on gravel, scraping up my forearms and hands and getting a terrific sunburn on my legs and elbows later I still had not managed to get it back in. It wasn't until the next day that I found out there was a forth bolt that had to be loosened in order for everything to line up correctly... Needless to say, me and my Jetta have a love-hate relationship.
However, I saved myself a couple bucks which means I can get my mic! I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a stand/boom of some sort, but we'll see one I actually have the microphone. Has anyone ever built a boom before? Any ideas for a cheap way to do it well?
Hopefully I'll have a picture of my setup to post soon.
