This time: Animal Crossing
The other day I heard about an Animal Crossing anime movie. I ended up downloading the movie on impulse and just got around to watching it earlier today. Honestly, going in I expected it to be shit. But boy was I wrong. It ended up being awesome.
The movie, based on the video game series of the same name, stars Horie Yui and Kobayashi Yuu as the female and male leads respectively. The movie basically follows the “plot” of the games, starting with the main character, a girl named Ai supposed to represent the player characters from the games, riding in Cap’n’s taxi to Animal Village, ready to start her life on her own.
Many adventures wait ahead of you, young traveler!
Ai then goes to the town hall, and meets Pelly and the Mayor, and is told to go to Tom Nook’s shop to get the key to her house. She then ends up running deliveries for Tom Nook to random residents of Animal Village, just like in the games. Eventually Ai finds a series of messages in bottles washed up on the beach, telling her to plant pine trees in very specific locations throughout the village for a “miracle during the winter festival.” What will the aforementioned miracle be?
The movie as actually very well-animated, and had a nice cast, something I didn’t expect. All the background music (BGM) was remixes of BGM from the games, and K.K. Slider even makes a cameo appearance for a wonderful rendition of K.K. Rhythm! The movie also has a simple and innocent art style that catches you off guard with its cuteness.

The movie is very much a slice of life (as the games themselves are pretty much slice of life: the game). The animators did a wonderful job of including all the side characters from the game (such as Mr. Resetti, that walrus guy who always shakes you down for food, and Redd the Crazy Fox). It also includes all the staple characters, such as Tom Nook, the owls in the museum, and the Mayor. It also does a great job of including a wide range of unique village residents.
I think to fully enjoy the movie, playing the games is a prerequisite. I personally found the movie hilarious, but that was because most of the humor was making fun of things that happen in the games, such as one resident fishing up a boot, or one particularly funny scene where two characters planted a bunch of pitfalls in the ground, causing many more residents to fall into them and become stuck, squirming to try and escape. Because of this, I feel that while still enjoyable to those who have not played the games, most of the jokes would probably go over your head if you have not played them.
We all know this feeling. "Maybe it's a fossil! I'll be rich!" Then you get trolled with that stupid gyroid that you already have a dozen of.
Well, at least it wasn't another damn sea bass.
Overall I loved this movie, and it was a great use of eighty-seven minutes. If you liked the games, you’ll like the movie. I score it at Tier A.
Your guide to Ferrose's rating system:
God Tier: 11/10. Very few shows can attain this tier. These are the best of the best. Make sure to watch them.
Tier S: 10/10. Shows that are once in a lifetime. Watch them before you die.
Tier A: 9/10. Wonderful shows, but they have a fatal flaw that won't let them get Tier S.
Tier B: 8/10. Still good and an auto-recommend.
Tier C: 7/10. Pretty average. Watch it if you're a fan of the genre.
Tier D: 6/10. Shows I didn't really like. A lot of these get dropped. Don't bother with them.
Shit Tier: <6/10. I hate these shows. They are a disgrace to anime. Perfect example: Code Geass R2.
