Disclaimer: Yep, this is pretty much just a rant, so stop here if you couldn't care less.
I have telus for my home internet as well as mobile phone service provider. Here is basically a list of why they fucking suck. I'm not even going to include typical shitty Canadian internet problems like low speeds and high rates. There's much to list aside from that.
I call telus after receiving my modem in the mail because nothing is working when I follow the directions on setting it up. I can't even understand the lady in tech support through her thick foreign accent. She tells me nothing I already don't know and ends up saying I have a 2 year contract with them. I signed up on a month-by-month basis. I'm positive of this. She says it's too late to change anything and I'm fucked and will have to pay a huge cancellation fee after I move away when my co-op term is over. I go in to the telus branch the following day and talk to the lady I signed up with. She says she knows I did a month-by-month basis contract too. She gives me a number to call. I call the number, tell them everything, and they finally make a note of it in my file or something so I won't get a cancellation fee.
Modem still wasn't working though, not that I expected it to work after fixing the contract problem though. I call technical support again, and they say they will send a technician out to see what's up the following day. I tell them I work 8-4:30pm and won't be able to answer my phone; they say that is okay. They will send a technician at 5pm. The next day, no technician comes by 6pm. I call in and complain and the person who answers the phone basically says "well I tried to call and there was no answer for confirmation for me to come today". He then says "so what do you want me to do about it?". I told you motherfuckers I was going to be at work, are you stupid? I want you to get your bitch ass down here and fix it now. I tell him that in a more polite manner of course, and he heads over. After about an hour of no success, he leaves down the street to look at their network console for the neighbourhood. Turns out my line wasn't connected properly and he fixes it.
My first bill is larger than it was supposed to be. I check where that price is coming from online and they pretty much charged me incorrectly, adding another 10$ or so. Based on the fact that every time I call telus I get dropped 2 or 3 times and spend an hour on hold I say "fuck it" and decide it's not even worth trying to fix.
Today I get home from work and I get that stupid page in my web browser directing me to telus to register my device and log in before I can continue. I've been keeping track of everything they give me, and I haven't even been given a username yet. I call telus, the stupid machine directs me to mobile phone tech support even though I'm sure I pressed the right key for home internet technical support. They answers and says he'll transfer me to the internet technical support. I'm on hold for half an hour and then my call gets dropped. Sick! I connect my phone to my laptop and enable USB tethering so I have a temporary internet connection on my laptop. I go to telus' online help chat and submit my problem. Estimated wait time: 13 minutes... 16 minutes... it's going up? grrr... Eventually someone responds and gives me a username + password to use. That was about 10 minutes ago, and she said wait 5 minutes, so I'm gonna try this again to see if it's fixed. I'm still using the tethered connection from my phone while writing this.
I'm not even going to go in to problems I have for my cell phone with telus. This is long enough already.
Basically, in summary, telus fucking sucks. There is no other option for internet here; I'd switch to something else in a heartbeat if I could.

I feel your pain. I'm in SK and we get Sasktel or Shaw. Both blow balls
|
shaw isn't much better, especially with all the bullshit going around with usage based billing
telco's in canada = supreme stacks of epic fucking bullshit. i'd be hard pressed to find another product that i'm more dissatisfied with but the market in canada blows all around

service providers in canada =

good God and I thought Verizon was bad. These companies really have to get their acts together. Stronger anti trust laws would force better products through competition, right? Oh well, good luck getting everything fixed.

canadian internet sounds so much awful compared to even australia.
|
That was hilarious. The whole thing is just a giant: "Fuck off" and "Oh God". So sorry to hear about it man, I don't have your patience, could never hold my tongue to those kinds of service people.
By the way, you're entitled to a refund.
And yeah, Canadian Internet is terrible. I'm with Videotron; high-rates, low speeds is right on the dot.
|
If UBB or any of the demented offshoots manage to take hold I think I'll switch to a quiet life of knitting and start actually saving some money. Yes, our ISP's are terrible. Every time I think of it I boil with rage and start throwing things.
|
Telus is still the lesser of the evils though, in my area, Shaw is even worse.
|
Never heard of the company "telus". It's kinda interesting looking at such a word totally unbiased though. I was convinced it was some food I didn't know about - and something really healty! Telus could totally be one of those pop healthy foods women love so much.
Anyways, sad to hear man. You guys in America are so behind with your internet connections. Google may stir up some shit soon, but that's certainly about time! Hopefully for the benefit of Canada aswell! ^^
|
I really hope google comes to Canada with gigabit connections soon. I just want to see our current ISP's squirm one last time before they suffocate on their own lard and die.
|
Shaw >> Telus, really high speeds and it helps that I live right beside Shaw for stability purposes lol.

Yeah I'm really wanting to fucking drive by the telus branch and whip a huge rock at the window.
So I was able to log in the with username + password the person gave me, which took me to a page asking me to register my devices with their MAC addresses, and I can't continue from here. There's nowhere on the fucking page that lets me register a device. I never had to do this the first time I set it up. What the fuck is this shit? Back on stupid chat support again -_-

18:42:52 : Edsel: Thank you for choosing TELUS and welcome to the TELUS Support Centre. My name is Edsel and I am here to help you today. May I have your phone or account number?
18:43:48 : Skylar: the account number is
18:44:07 : Skylar: **********
18:44:54 : Skylar: I don't see anywhere on the page to register a device's MAC address. It simply lists the MAC address of the modem router and that is all.
18:45:00 : Edsel: Ok I will need to transfer you over to our Internet department for more help. I better not get dropped or something or there will be hell to pay.
|
where are you at? i find it hard to believe telus can be the ONLY provider
|
Salmon Arm, B.C.
Telus is the only internet provider in the area. I guarantee it, I've asked around.
|
Ah yes, I remember having to register mac addresses with Telus! That was always such a wonderful experience. Every time I had upgraded a mobo or switched something around I had to manually fool around with their tech support. God damnit, the flashbacks. I remember having phoned them not once but twice because they would remove the wrong mac addresses and nuke internet access on one machine. Then I'd have them fix that, but they'd remove the NEW mac addresses instead and nuke the new one. Christ, it was such a hassle.
I loathed mobo upgrades just because of Telus.

Damn that sucks

why is it that my brain processed this as "Why I hate Lemonwalrus"??
anyways, wow Canadian Internet is more butt hurt than Indian Internet.

Telus keeps saying I'm downloading Nickelback songs onto my phone. I don't like Nickelback in the slightest, so why would I do that? It's also charging me $10 per month for a game fee, yet I have no games on my phone.
It's been doing this for a couple years. Contract's almost up. Definitely should switch.
I'm really glad I've never had them for internet.
We had them for our home phone service for a while, and it was terrible. It wasn't even a decent connection most of the time: static, dropped calls, and the like.
I feel for you, man.

2nd tech support guy was useless as expected. He said my devices are registered on his end. It's clearly still not working. He then gave me a different username and password to try, and I got an error with that. He told me to hardwire my laptop instead, and I've tried that. Then my conversation disconnection.
Still not working...

Still not working... Get a refund or ask to not be charged this month for all these issues.
|
Another 36 minutes wait time for a new support rep who probably will end up transferring me to someone else.
I don't even get how this happened. I know I don't owe anything on my account balance (paid last week or something), and the internet was working fine this morning before I left for work. Hopefully it'll fix itself overnight or something -_-
|
I honestly would start standing my ground and start demanding some form of compensation. I did it with Dell and they kept sending me upgraded replacements of my laptop until I got one I liked (which I didn't and got a refund of 1700$ + I get to keep my original old laptop and they forgot the other two laptops they sent me as replacements).
But that's just me ;x
|
Yeah that's a good idea. I can't believe how loaded you got off Dell ahahah. Whether the problem gets fixed anytime soon or not, I'm going to fucking rage at them. I don't want the dude who ends up receiving my complains to take it personally, but this is bullshit. Rage incoming.
edit: 32 minutes... down 4 minutes after 10 actual minutes. sadfsdfsbwrtuyilkjhgfdrawtythg

All their laptops were terrible overheating garbage. I even got one that was missing 2 gigs of ram (maybe it shorted out, I dunno).
Speaker died on another one quite shortly after, so yeah. I got 2 free laptops (one I had to send back to get my refund), but they're terrible!
Good luck and tell them as a customer these were below your expectations, talk about your history with the company, the barrage of problems you've had and you are expecting bla bla bla.

The longer this goes on, the more it sounds like Kafka's "The Trial", with you being pulled around by a faceless bureaucracy over a long period of time for no apparent reason. The operators are kind of like the various lower judges that constantly block any progress you try to make. Let's just hope you don't end up in a quarry with a knife in your chest

Did they overheat to the point of crashing, overheat with no provocation, or what? I'm a little worried cause I've got a Dell as well.

My 1530 (this was back in 2008 I believe) would overheat when just running Windows, it was meant to be for gaming (8600 Nvidia, 4 gigs of Ram, nothing amazing or great) and it would overheat doing nothing.
Then I got the 17 Studio ones (they were designed for more studio-oriented applications and work) and the sound was great, just the ram was shorted out and never was activated.
Then they sent me another, keyboards were not very responsive (it is now working after a few bangs) and it would crash after about 2 hours of general uses (word, music + internet and chatting).
They sent me one last one and I just lied and told them it was terrible just so I can get a refund (took two weeks for Purolator to deliver it to me and by 2 weeks, I mean they either kept skipping my condo or didn't bother ringing the buzzer so I can let them in [I had security record video footage of them reaching the door with the Dell box for my laptop, try and pull the door open, then just wrote their note and left).

Holy shit these guys are stupid. Finally got a hold of another guy. Here's the conversation: 20:06:27 : Rocky: Welcome to TELUS support Center, my name is Rocky. 'Least you don't have to deal with Shaw. My experiences with Telus are favourable compared to the bullshit I've been putting-up with at my current place. Wish I had the Telus option here.

telus is great cause they cave to anything
me and my friends have free pretty much everything from them just by complaining about their shit and threatening to switch to another company, they'll do ANYTHING to keep a customer
but yeah they're a pile of garbage in general

I began fucking around with this piece of shit router I have to use and renews my public IP address on the router, fixing it. I don't know why I didn't try that before. I unplugged the DSL line and power cycled it earlier, which I thought would get it to renews its IP, but I guess not.
4 fucking hours of wasted time and they could have just told me to renew the IP. Incompetent jackasses.

In my opinion, they should hire people that actually know what they're talking about. I hate it when I have a problem and I know more than the person I'm talking too. At least you finally figured it out. Now you know what steps to take the next time you have a problem.

It sucks no matter who you're gona be with in Canada, be it internet or mobile phone.
|
lol, thats ridiculous. I've had similar experiences with Bell. They're absolutely fucking terrible. Dont have any experience with Rogers, but I've heard some bad things... Shaw is pretty decent down here in Kelowna, though.
|
Seems like all providers over there are terrible. I live in a freakin post-comunistic Czech republic and my 30Mb/s connection works fine, got one outage over last year that was fixed in no more than 3 hours. I suggest sit in a car and drive over to Telus to manage things properly Good luck with that man, hopefully you will get it fixed soon.
|
Eastlink is probably the best ISP in Canada at the moment. I can't get it where I live now, so hurp de durp Rogers
|
In Terrace, Telus was better than CityWest, which I believe used/uses a Shaw back-bone. In the two places I've used Shaw down here (Burnaby-Metro area) it's been utter garbage, one place of which I switched to Telus in and felt almost no more hiccups. Not saying Telus is perfect -- I've had my share of problems with them, too -- but they've been infinitely better for me.
So many things about Shaw other than their actual connectivity has been horrible -- I actually hate whoever is responsible for their business structure. Hate. That's coming from someone who reminds himself regularly that he is bitching about A) a luxury service, and B) people who're in the same position as he's been in at their jobs, and are not at fault. I finally called them about cancelling my service since I'm moving soon, and said along the lines of, "I know this isn't your fault, and I'm sorry you have to be the one to relay it, but please, relay it: you service is FUCKING TERRIBLE." Proceeded to tell him everything that was fucking horrid about their procedures, practice and pricing on-top of this lack of support.

Complain time motherfuckers. Currently chatting with someone who is going to have one hell of a shitty day now, especially if he doesn't remedy me somehow. Will update with results.

I can back this up. I have a 60 gig cap with Shaw for my internet. I know i've gone over this month (Borderlands + Bioshock DLed from Steam plus HD GSL streaming) but I warned my dad that we should get a better plan with a bigger cap or it cost us more in the long run. Sasktel's internet is good (no caps) but their TV service is complete garbage. If it was better we would have Sasktel instead of Shaw. We've been with Shaw for 15+ years and they won't give my dad any deals if we change our plans or even do anything to keep our business. If I had to choose, we'd already be with Sasktel, but then again, I probably wouldn't have TV and instead get a better internet connection and Netflix.
I actually did have a good experience with Sasktel Mobility when a glitch happened in the system and my phone couldn't text. I was on hold under a minute and the person on the other end fixed it personally and I was done in under 5 minutes. It was impressive. And They upgraded my mobile internet for free since I was one of the first customers in the province to get a 3G phone (Galaxy S, it's okay.). I'm really glad I didn't go with Telus. I was going to because they have better phones but after hearing so many stories of how bad their customer service is, I decided not to.
Don't even get me started on Rogers. I have 3 friends on their phone plans and it is easily one of the worst.
|
The telus guy from chat basically just apologized and I said it wasn't good enough. Compensation or I'm making a switch. He said he will have someone contact me via phone to discuss it further.
I don't know why no one I talked to has ever mentioned the existence of them. If telus doesn't offer me something good I might look in to these guys.
|
Might as well get out now. Getting my cell cancelled with them was an absolute nightmare. Basically I was told that my account was closed, I wasn't receiving any bills, my phone didn't work and I had a receipt for the cancellation fee. 3 months later they send me a bill for the past 3 months+ next month and when I called into customer service I was told that I had never cancelled my account and they honestly expected me to pay the cancellation fee again. I had the receipt/bill thing I was given when I cancelled and they told me I should bring it into a store to get the situation resolved.
I had to go into one of the retail outlets, where I had to demand a manager. She was all pissy with me because apparently I disturbed her solitaire session in the backroom. Had the bill/receipt thing with and was curious as to why there was a $240 charge for a cancellation fee. She tried to tell me that I had to call into client care to get my account cancelled and that she couldn't help me.
I was furious. SO MAD. I've never been that mad in my life. I end up going rage mode on her and force her to call into client care and get it cancelled for me. I had to stand there for an hour while she got tossed around by loyalty/supervisors because no one can do anything when all the departments are outsourced. Man, I was so pissed. I can feel the rage building just thinking about it. End of the story is me standing there for 45 fucking minutes before she gets hold of someone that is actually in a company office.
|
Fucking hell. A manager calls me while I'm in the middle of taking a shit LOL
I asked for a better internet plan for compensation, but apparently the line doesn't support anything greater than 6Mbps. Damn Canadian internet. He asked what else he can give me so I asked for money compensation in the form of my internet bills. He only offered one months worth of free service; I didn't want to feel greedy, so I just accepted that.
|
There's Shaw, Rogers, and Telus here in Calgary ... they all suck just like Grobyc says but Shaw just sucks a little less than Telus and Rogers just sucks balls. I feel your pain man, I hate dealing with their so called Customer Support.

Better than nothing I guess!

I prefer Telus over Shaw since they don't cap your internet usage really badly, and I don't really care about the internet speed differences that much. Tech support for Telus is terrible though esp. the online one
|
loltelus. I know that the call centers for Shaw support for BC are in province and sometimes you get one in the GVRD which is really nice. Sucks that you have to call them at all though lol.
|
I use Shaw and I find it to be the best thing available in Western Canada, not saying a whole lot but they used to have local support here in town. They recently moved them all to the Calgary office which is still a lot more local than some companies.
Canadian internet will never change because our telecom's are way too greedy and powerful now.

Ask for cable; Telus only supports ADSL as far as I know and the phone line doesn't support as much mbps as cable. As long as you have a cable tv jack, it should be possible.
|
Also, you are not guarenteed max speed with ADSL. Especially if you are in a 'remote' area, you will most definitely not see advertised speeds due to the distance to the nearest co office. cable is your best friend. give sunwave a call.
|
I suppose I could switch since I already got a months free, I wouldn't be losing anytthing now ;D
|
I used to have Telus then I switched to Shaw and I find it better than Telus....Not better, much better imo I have Shaw Extreme 15 Mbps, no complaints so far :D
|
5 stars for you, I know your feel
If it helps, here in Spain we have one of the worse internet market in Europe. We're way poorer than Canada so it makes sense, but still it is freakin ridiculous in comparison to any other European country. I've been attached to the same company for like 8 years because I KNOW that if ever try to change companies/speed/etc. I'm gonna have a fuckload of trouble to get into the internet ever again.
|
I just hate the pricing on internet here. I have Roger's Express, which has a bandwidth limit of 60 gb. I pass it all the time because my sister is watching her 5 hours of t.v. on her comp every night. I want to upgrade but holy shit, for a 20 GB bump to 80 GB total I have to pay 13 more dollars. $47 dollars is what I'm paying now, if I want to get another 20 GB I have to pay $60. That's expensive data, I can get data on my cellphone for $10. Fuck this shit, I'm switching to techsavvy next month.
|
I got into a 3-year plan with Telus telephone internet and I moved to a place where they didn't have any service. They put a $3,400 collections against me and for 6 years it's screwed my credit rating and then cbv collections put another $3,400 collections against me so they reported it twice for $3,400. if I got a life terminal illness tomorrow I take a gun with 700 f****** rounds a minute and I blow every c*********** f****** person away in that organization
