In all seriousness, that's a pretty low thing to do in my opinion. When I was 17 I scratched someone's bumper (wrecking my passenger door in the process), left them a note and immediately went into the nearby stores to find the person. Ended up putting me back about $900 (the bumper - my door is still screwed up), so I had to work my ass off the last couple weeks of summer. Take responsibility, even if you can't pay now I can guarantee that the person would be thrilled even if you had to pay them over time.

leave a note or ask inside; your father probably should have not advised you that way, cameras or no cameras. It's just not a good habit to have. If you're possibly strapped on cash, I get it, and this ain't a moral judgement, but its not good to have that kind of reaction; next time when it is serious and you don't spot a camera and there is one, and you remember what you're dad said and just bolt, then you're fucked. Sometimes, small or big, things like this, you just need to take care of properly or attempt to. Again, no judgement on you or your father, and you did post, just don't make a habit of it.

Exactly. This is my only qualm with the whole situation. For some people money is really hard to come by, and if somebody did enough damage to your vehicle in a hit and run that rendered it unable to get an inspection sticker, you HAVE to fork out the cash to get that fixed or constantly be worried about getting pulled over and fucked (been there, done that, the paranoia is AWFUL). This may be a bad analogy, but the way I look at it is almost like you withdrawing $400 from the atm and then getting mugged immediately after. That money is gone, you feel like shit, you lose some faith in humanity, and you'll have spiteful feelings of having been wronged that will affect other avenues of your life. The only difference there is malicious intent. While the mugger intends to be malicious, you clearly didn't, at least initially. However, knowing what you did is wrong and not owning up to it almost puts you at that malicious level (or does).

Hit and run is a pretty common thing. It happened to me once where the driver almost drove off but an eye witness made her give her information. I was pretty lucky and i'm thankful for the person that forced the woman to give her information. We resolved it easily but I was still angry over the fact she would have driven away if nobody would have stopped her.

I was out playing warhammer one day, and parked my car in the usual lot. I get back to my car after a game or two, and bam, the front's smashed. No note, no nothing. Just my hood is bent, bumper scratched to hell, lights are broken, and hood ornament missing. I start the engine, and the "check engine" light is on and flashing angrily. According to the manual it means, "don't drive anywhere lol". Fortunately it was all covered by warranty and such, but I still had to get towed, spend 6 or so hours at the dealership while they fixed it, etc. So... again, fuck you, lol

Put up a notice in that area right now with an e-mail address and offer to pay the damages.

However, there always is the chance the guy does not notice and doesn't retrace his steps to the Hospital.

Maybe it's more complicated than this but I really don't think cosmetics is as important as most people I guess.

I do agree with this though. It's not a healthy reaction to have to this kind of situation.
