So I just played a game on ICCup and I will be darned if the last 4 opponents I played in "D level" games were not all C- and above in previous seasons. I finally stopped playing after I met a B level korean. Now all of this makes me wonder what a legit D level player is. For all the hate on WC3's AMM system, this would not happen after 10 games or so. But that's another story.

I enjoyed playing BW as a challenge, but after playing for a year, I'm starting to get tired of getting roflstomped by players that have played for years longer than I have. This just becomes a grindfest where I'm playing and watching replays trying to make better decisions and increasing apm to keep up with multitask. Is this fun? Well I've said "no" in the past many times and kept playing, but what is the point, really. Nobody I know in real life even plays BW any more. I'm probably not going to get solid D+ for another year or so at least. There's not much enjoyment in following builds over and over again. It starts to feel like actual work rather than a game.

So.. what is the reason that lets you keep on gaming?

oh yeah. my crappy account: http://www.iccup.com/starcraft/matchlist/1680580/1x1.html

P.S. I play T except for vs. T, where I play PvT. It's really quite interesting since I can beat C- terrans sometimes yet I still lose to 30% D tosses.

My suggestion would be to find some buddies here on this site to play regular pickup games with and give you feedback.

I remember getting roflstoped by intrigue about 50 times in a row back in 2006.

The return of the B- smurfes damn.

btw i got rolled last week by a D- Korean Terran with 220 apm fml. Sometimes i feel that ranks don't mean anything. That guy seemed at least C level >.<

ranks dont mean a thing, i got to C-/C at my peak (around tsl2 time, a little into beta as i didnt have a key for a long while lol) and there were some times i could beat B- players yet lose to D+ players in the same day...confused the hell out of me hahaha but really ranks are just a meter of a general skill range of what to expect oh and if its a korean...ignore the D- he could have just gotten a string of other koreans who were also high level, ive seen ppl at D- before who just had a string against really strong opponents early in the season but were in the B rank skill level

If something isn't enjoyable, don't let yoruself be convinced by anyone, not even yourself, to prusue doing it. If it isn't something you enjoy take a break for a while and come back and see if it is at all refershing to you. We're only human afterall and and souldnt be slave driven, not even by ourselves. Take a break, relax, and come back to practice and play again when you are good in ready. Because a lot of people get burnt out if the time they spend practicing is mindless, isolated, grinding hours of games alone. You said nobody you knew in person plays anymore so I guess it isn't as viable as an option anymore to invite friends over to play with or even have chill and watch, which would defiantely give a nice fresh feeling to the practice you put it. So all I can really say si either take a break and come back with a different outlook, or try to find a way to make practice fun by sugarcoating it in some way or adding a fun aspect to it (like friends, family, your girl if you're extremely lucky, etc.)

Best of wishes to you man!

Oh wow I am the exact same. I'm a T user and when the other guy goes T I go P and I easily own the other guy. I think its a mix of knowing alot of terrans weaknesses and P being easier at the lower levels :p.

Sometimes I don't know why I game, then other times it's like, what else would I do? I wouldn't be a very interesting person.

I don't know because I get a lot of shit when I play FPS games like CS:S or TF2, and because I am horrid at SC2..
But the rest of the time, it's because it is really fun. I have made so many good friends. =] I love meeting people and talking to them and just generally being social while I'm at home as well. Not saying i'm not social, but, when you get home, usually it's just like.. you+family+facebook, right? xD

Point is: I gave because I get to meet new people, because I love to, and because it is, to a degree, fulfilling. =]

Yeah, that is the same reason I'm not laddering and playing the game just for what it is, a game. I just hate that feeling on ICCup when playing a game feels like a chore, something you have to do but don't feel like it (like taking out the trash). I'd much rather play 50 games in a row with a friend, without the extra pressure of earning that 130 points, or reaching that shiny yellow icon.

But not everyone is like this. Some people absolutely love that rush of getting points for their games (or losing them -.-). You just gotta find what floats your boat the best. For some people it's laddering, for some it's playing 1v1 with their friends and some like to BGH it up

I also know that feeling having picked up ICCup and serious BW not that long ago. My reason for gaming actually is to try to get good at something that is fun to me and pit myself against competition. I also don't like to get roflstomped, that's why I tried to find some people to practice with. Try op teamliquid or op sGs channels. So, yeah, I like to actually get good at things, but doing this with people you actually like (by playing them or skype while laddering) is much more fun imho.

BroodWar is hard, man. No matter how well you play, there is always a way you could have done better. That's what's intriguing about it for most people.

Just try to find some people on the forums and play with them. Some people play ladder forever and never really get much better. It's when you play with the same players over and over that you start to figure things out and have an opportunity to grow. That growth is what's fun.

At the same time, it's a game. It's not an investment in your future, you don't need to get good at it... If you're not having fun you should just stop playing it. With my internet it's hard to find people I don't lag with. When it lags it just isn't fun for me. So even me, a guy who loves BroodWar, doesn't necessarily have to play it. I can watch the progames and play once in a blue moon just the same.

Tips for enjoying BroodWar:

-Don't obsess about your record
-Play friends (even if you have to make new ones )
-Appreciate the content of the game, not just the result of the game
-Come up with your own strategies
-Don't copy other players endlessly

I think it looks like you're doing all right, just keep it up. My first iccup-session I went like 13-80 or something, and I just tried to improve that number all the time. I practiced muta-micro and different strategies. What I did was focusing on one race (and often one map) at the time, so when I felt strong in ZvP, I started to practice ZvT, and lastly ZvZ. I think I reached D+ in each matchup before I played against the other races (even though I did play against other races sometimes as well).

If you don't find it fun at times you should quit. I enjoyed becoming better, which do take time and effort, so it's not like I was surprised at becoming angry at the game (like I do now at Super Street Fighter 4 >_<). I swear and shout, but I still find fun stuff in the games I play (and I guess that's why I don't play sc2 as much). If you don't find anything fun with it, change!
