Note: This blog may not have a purpose or mean a thing.

My boyfriend recently came to the conclusion that I am one of the biggest fans of Starcraft 2 without ever having actually played the game.

He's taking a nap as I'm thinking about this and I realize that I think he's right. At least, he's right in part.

His reasons make a lot of sense. I've dreamt about Tasteless, Day9, Artosis, and IdrA on more than one occasion. I used to lurk this forum and then decided to get an account on here to post stuff. Hell, I've even made Tasteless and Artosis on the Sims 3 and report back to him every so often about it. I watch videos relating to Starcraft out of boredom and I don't play. I'm learning to understand what everything means. I'm following at least 10 people related to Starcraft and am definitely developing an interest in it.

I think it might be good for me to learn how to play. Does anyone have any suggestions whatsoever?

He knows I do and what it's about and I'm sure he probably does.

Well, I don't think he knows I had a dream about IdrA.

If you want to learn the best way to start is to just play and learn from your boyfriend, it may seem a lot harder than playing singleplayer and laddering by yourself, but if you teach yourself it is easy to gain bad playing habits.

It's a video game not rocket science, a good first step would be double clicking on the desktop icon to launch it

HERESY!
Starcraft>all!!
Besides, if he likes Starcraft, and she likes Starcraft, and they can both play it together; that beats the fuck out of a lame massage orsome "nice clothes" any day of the week.

You don't need to like Starcraft to have dreamed about those guys.

It's fully possible to appreciate Starcraft without ever playing the game. The same logic can be applied to any sport.

But, once you have first hand experience with the game, you will likely appreciate it more. The same logic can be applied to any sport.

Move an Archon around and make it kill 2 Zerglings, and a connectedness can be established between you and the virtual unit. You don't need to ladder or anything. Just go beat the computer. After that, you can use SC2 to play very casual custom games like Nexus War and stick to watching SC2 on youtube.

Just dive in, if you have watched starcraft games you know more than enough to get started.

StarCraft 2 has a big spectator aspect to it, every so often when I cast I'll notice my mom peering over my shoulder to see what's going on because it sounds very interesting.

Being a fan of SC2 is nothing bad, and you're not alone in what you think.

Yeah I'd say just go for it, start playing. Maybe a game or two against a medium AI and then do your placement matches. If you need any help improving, consult Ver's How to Improve guide in the Brood War forum and you'll be on your way to mid or upper diamond in no time at all.

It is going to be tough when you just first start playing. You will be bad. You will lose a lot of games. It will take a lot of time to get better. However, if you can tough it out for a while, the game can be very rewarding and fun. This isn't to say that the lower levels can't be fun either though. My brother just started playing, and he gets frustrated very easily so I don't think that he'll be playing very much in the future.

Basically you just have to keep playing. If you lose, don't get down, but rather, try to learn from it and improve so that you will never lose in the same fashion again.

You've got a long road ahead of you.

You do not have to play to enjoy Starcraft. Depending on how competitive you are, playing the game can be pretty depressing at times. Nothing makes me rage like losing 5 games in a row. Watching games can make me rage too (like Jaedong losing to Flash in game 2 of the msl last year... oooh that one stung like a bitch), but you get the same enjoyment without all the extra effort.
