So yeah, any suggestions? I don't know exactly how much I want to spend on it. I just know $170 is too damn high.

It's very important that you know the knife laws of your district, city, and state. It can vary at each level and that difference can lead to a fine or worse. - Pardon, should have just left off tactical, even if it was meant in a derisive sense.

Easy to hide, carry around as an office tool, always stay sharp both edge and head. After the crime happen you could simply break it apart easily and throw each part at a random location. Edit: requires TONS of practice to be deadly, not for amauter to use it on the street. If you want a knife for decoration, on the other hand, try to look into the japansese ones. They are both used in kitchen and by Yakuza xD... Not as handy as western swiss type but they are sharp and last longerrrrr. http://korin.com/Learn/About-Japanese-Knives If you need a jungle/travel knife, get a cheap mutil purpose swiss one unless you are going to the army....

let us know a little more about your preferences, do you want something big, a utility knife for everyday carry, should it be extremely tough or just used for light cutting, do you want something that looks stabby and scary or just elegant... i also recommend you inform yourself about knife laws in your state if you plan on carrying a knife around with you before purchasing one that might get you into trouble. one suggestion i can throw out is a benchmade mini griptilian (BM555HG or BM556) - a general purpose knife with similar size as the hk knife but the same quality as the osborne. if you want more information, you will have to give us some more details

I also recommend staying away from knives branded with a specific name but yet have nothing to do with said brand (e.g. Smith & Wesson cutlery). In my country it's illegal to carry around a knife bigger than a few centimeters so I really have no idea. Can't see myself having much use of one if I'm not going backpacking etc. Also, if you plan to kill someone, knives are a bit messy and not for the inexperienced. Better to buy a sniper rifle or something if you think that you may get a weak stomach.

Anyway, I've never had any problems with any of the Gerber knives I've had, and I'm quite happy with my current one. I've heard good things about Benchmade, but never used one.

This knife will probably be for everyday carry, just for general use. Seems like a pretty useful thing to have.

You might want to converse with a lawyer just so you can get specific ordinances that aren't made too well known. Example, Texas statewide allows for a blade length of 5 1/2 inches, but the city, Corpus Christi, has a city ordinance allowing only a max length of 3 inches. Generally these nuances aren't really enforced, but there is always a police officer who is not having a good day. On March 13 2011 03:00 dogabutila wrote: anything by Emerson. Is a good suggestion, the waving feature is a pretty slick idea. They carry a premium price, but you can get some models for $140-150. Problem is the factory is no longer selling to your state, so you definitely should speak to lawyer to make sure you know what is allowable. Kershaw has pretty good introductory priced knifes. Leek (3 inches) is pretty popular. Spyderco Endura (3 3/4 inches), Delica(2 7/8 inches), and Tenacious (3 3/8 inches) are also the go-to introductory knives, probably 10 dollars or so more than the Leek. I'd suggest the Boker Subcom (1 7/8 inches), midget knife so no one will be likely to give you the stink eye if you pull it out and you'll easily forget that you have it in your pocket. Also you can buy wood scales for it: http://blog.cuscadi.de/?page_id=253 and make it look classy as fuck.

I'm in college in NYC, and I'm from the MD/VA/DC area. For concealed and open carry, all four places are fine with it. The only restriction on blade length is in DC, where it's a 3" limit. Larger than 3" is allowed if you have no intent to harm, but the catch is that the burden of proof is now on the carrier instead of the law.

If you want something for everyday urban use, you cant beat a multitool. A lot of straight up knives are great, especially outdoors or for other, more shady circumstances. But in an urban setting where you just want a useful tool to have on you at all times, the multitool is the way to go. Generally Leatherman brand is a safe bet. http://www.fitsmybudget.com/images/T/premier-multitool.jpg The best thing about this is that the multitool is not a threatening device, but it has the same utility as a knife. I would say it has much more utility, the pliers alone are worth more than a knife in my opinion. I carry one that fits into the tiny pocket in my jeans for easy access, and a much bigger one for hiking/traveling.

I decided the Osborne 930, 940, and such were all a bit pricey. I'm currently looking at knives that are less than $100, in the $60 to $80 range. I am mainly looking at these two: http://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-551-Griptillian-Pardue-Design/dp/B000NZPFMK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1300792397&sr=8-2 and http://www.amazon.com/Benchmade-Pardue-Design-Griptillian-Coated/dp/B001BAAM2Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300792397&sr=8-1 The difference in cost is only about $1.50, so I'm only considering the two based on their quality. Does the BK1 coating help a lot? I'm leaning towards the first one. And does anyone else have suggestions of knives that are arguably "better" within this price range?
