...but first off, an introduction. skip down below if you'd like! + Show Spoiler +Hello TeamLiquid! I joined a while ago, but I've still been a bit on the lurking side of things. Not having much of any BW experience and only a couple of months of SC2 experience (and I'm still gold), I didn't feel like I had anything worthwhile to contribute...but I figure as long as I stay out of the SC2 or BW strategy board I should be fine! Let's see, anything else... I'm a high school student at one of the top (public) schools in the USA, and I'm starting to hate the fact that I actually have to apply myself and actually study I'm the only female at my school's StarCraft club, but that doesn't really bother me. I don't bring attention to it, and no one else does. Except for when they tell me to make a sandwich. That's about all I got, so kudos to you if you actually read this!
Rant incoming.
When I started playing MMOs about three years ago, I had no idea what I was in for. My first MMO was Ragnarok Online, which is one of the most bot-filled places I've ever seen xD Anyway, when you signed up for an account, it would ask for your gender. I clicked female, since I knew that I did, in fact, have two X chromosomes.
I kept on getting all this free stuff - money, items; I'd ask if someone had a warp and someone would just give me 30k :/ I was like "wtf that's not a warp D:" I didn't make the connection that they were giving me all this free stuff simply because I had clicked 'female' when I made my account. It kind of weirds me out, since I think I need to give them something in return for their generosity, but then they just walk off with no friend request or anything that could be used to find me again - or give me a chance to repay them.
About a year after all that mess, I became good friends with a handful of guildmates. One of them came out and just blatantly asked me and a RL friend if we were really female - apparently a lot of people choose to make female characters just for the sake of getting items. I guess I didn't grasp the concept that one could completely change their identity on the internet like that haha. That kind of shocked me, and I've always wondered how many people are what they appear to be on the internet. Though I always base people on their personalities - do some people go further than just picking up a different sprite to actually changing their personalities when they pick up that cloak of anonymity...?
TL;DR: My question to you TL - have you ever made a female character in an MMO? If so, why? Do you enjoy getting the free items or does it bother you? Also, have you ever changed to a different personality when you're on the internet? Why?

Well, if I have to stare at either a dudes ass, or a chicks ass for hours..... id rather stare at a females. But thats just me.
|
I innocently chose female in MMO's when I was younger, because I didn't like boy characters. (I'm female as well.) I did get lots of free things. It confused me. O_O I got older, and I started checking out MMO's again(about a year or two ago), and I would play a few geared towards younger audiences with a few of my older friends, because they were cute and the player base wasn't very large. I would honestly get lots of young boys(don't take this the wrong way) giving me free items, asking to be my friend, and all that. I stopped playing them, because it felt incredibly wrong. LOL.
When I started playing Counterstrike, I would constantly get people adding me to their friends, talking to me, or being rude, because I was female. I didn't mind them adding me to their friends, but when I started getting rude comments, I started to hide my female-ness a bit. But I stopped caring, made more "friends"(whether they were friends or not, but I knew I had real friends in a few people -shrug-), and enjoyed playing~ For the past year, I've had guys randomly buy me games on steam. I have not purchased a single game I own on steam. .__.;; It bothers me. xP

Basically what DyEnasTy said, female characters tend to be hotter unless its a tauren. Also, no one present day would give you free items just for having a female character. Only thing I've ever done to change personality is to try to be a little bit cooler than I actually am.
Edit: I stand corrected, apparently there are sad souls out there that'll give a girl free stuff just for existing >.>
|
I actually know an irl girl ingame and shes the one who keeps buying me stuff :/ im like the complete opposite to the rule haha. But no i wouldnt make a female char for free stuff, i made a female human when i faction changed because i prefered the casting animations and i wanted the racial.
|
Ussually my mains are males, and some alts females, i ussually like the female "models" more.... i've tried to change my personality ingame.. i cant
|
@DyEnasTy & Kakera & nekuodah & Inzek: That makes sense. I've heard some RL friends justify it by saying that the animations or form of the characters were better, or something along those lines.

I've stayed away from MMOs lately - or played male characters - because they've gone from just giving items to flat out flirting. internet flirting is awkward :/ especially when they might be iunno ten or something D:

None of my RL friends, male of female, buy me anything. They either tell me to hack/crack it or man up and level without [insert cash shop item here] xP
Edit: people reply fast Dx

Ah, I go back to Counterstrike constantly. Even that was bought for me X_X Counterstrike is my homey-feeling game. Haha. Otherwise I add games to my wishlist strictly for my own reminder, and then people are like /BUY and i'm like "Wow I hate you. |:" and they get confused. p_q

My main character in any of the few MMOs I've played was a male (provided I have the option). Since it's the one I play with the most, that's what I'd like to be seen as by my in-game friends
I usually have a couple of female alts though. Funny thing is, people in general tend to treat me better (not noticeably better but better nevertheless) with a female alt than my male main, even if I make it clear that I'm a guy in real life :/
|
When I've made female characters in the past, the extra attention bothered me. I don't want to be treated differently because of the gender of my character.

People hit on females in every single game I've played. Even if theyh weren't sure it was actually a female.
This one guy in Counterstrike sounded like a 12 year old boy. People were unsure if it was male or female. And I remember one clan member banning some kid for making inappropriate comments to a girl on the clan. It's kind of gross. There was also one really talkative female that people always talked to. She just annoyed me, so I don't know if they liked her personality, or that she was a girl.

I don't talk very often anymore, and usually just talk to the few people I know, otherwise I just play. There was a girl that came onto a server I was playing on, and I finally said something to one of my friends out loud on mic, and she was so vicious and hostile because I was another girl playing on the same server as her. I don't even understand why she was still playing; Guys were making fun of her and making her get mad so often. I was so confused, I just wanted to play. *_*
Edit: Oh yeah, I bolded what you said for a reason. I see a lot of girls who talk very often. I can't understand for the life of me why people are interested though. She'll sit there screaming and yelling and OMGAWDDDDDD LAWLAWLAWLing and i'm like o_O /embarrassed to be a girl.

That's the way I feel, too. I couldn't change my gender on RO, but if I could I would. It seems wrong to have them give me stuff simply because of the difference in gender

^my toon!
When I first started wow i picked a male but then realized that the female animations were much smoother. Seriously, the male animations make it look like the character is on LSD.
I've also been pretty much running around with gladiator/retarded pvp gear so nobody gives me anything.
But yeah, i mean... really it's the same in real life if you think about. Guys typically get girls free stuff for whatever reason ( it's most likely to get in your pants) like dinner/jewely/tickets whatever.
Actually now that I think about, men LOVE to GIVE to women for absolutely nothing in return. Probably some kind of evolutionary biological thing from when we helped you scrubs stay alive in the wild!

I think people in general can get territorial. If they perceive a threat to their security, they'll get jealous. I've seen it happen plenty of times.

This literally summed up my thoughts on it, though as someone who played Ragnarok Online quite a bit. I would only make Female Whitesmiths because they were the coolest looking character in the game.
Though, Pokemon games on the other hand I always have to be the male character the sprite is usually cooler.

I always make female characters, free stuff and people are generally friendlier to you. I never actually pretend to be female though, for some reason people rarely ask.

I'd rather spend that money on something practical or something fun like a game or a book or something.
