Well for us in Hong Kong, the easiest way is to create some type of brand, and do OEM in China (the factories are all near the Guangdong area and whole supply chain is there, thanks to all the US outsourcing).
We were talking about making a gaming gear brand, with the famous e-sport player as the core of each series of products. Its kinda like the Nike's "Live strong" brand inspired by Lance Armstrong; you get the meaning...
In Starcraft terms, the easiest example will be with the famous player Idra:
We can create the "Respect" series, with different products like the "Rage mouse", "Manner Keyboard" and "Self Respect Headphones". You can even add macro function to help quick and painless rage-quit where you can type about the imba race and quit with one single button. You can also make T-shirts with famous quotes.
Of course for this type of model to be successful, you will need to have new products and new series every so often. A safer bet will be sponsoring a few players, in case one of them have set backs in their gaming career. A lot of the local Chinese brand use foreign athletes as their endorser (NBA, european soccer stars...etc); I bet hiring an e-sport player will be much cheaper. Other marketing methods local use are using is sending products to famous blogger for free, and they will write about it in their blog. The same can be applied if you send them to Day9, just by having a chance of being seen in the dailies once in a while would be helpful.
The key to all these is to be cheap, as the target customer base is not that huge yet. Marketing and production must both be cheap. You probably need to one-man team the whole thing to keep cost under control. Of course it will still be extremely hard to make money until you got through the MOQ.
Well... too much day dreaming... back to work!
