I last played WoW just before the release of burning crusade, when I had a fleeting month or two of disloyalty to my current game of choice, which was Guild Wars, and by the way, GW was epic and anyone thats says otherwise is a charlatan.
(Yet another game Koreans where pretty fucking gosu at)
I played then on a PvP role playing server, it was one of the worst experiences of my game playing life, next to trying complete the brick flung high challenge on TS1.
No one really ever talked to anyone, and I certainly didn't, a bad time was had by all.
So that was nearly 4 years ago. Thanks to a little booze, some indecent sleep walking and my Uni friends playing it, I was persuaded to make a new account. Anyways its been ten days now, and I'm already bored out of my mind, playing a healer at lvl25. I'm pretty sure I'm going to quit and uninstall, I've already cancelled my subscription, so to the fans of WoW, see this a challenge, try and persuade me that I should stay, and to anyone else, you can persuade me that I actually spend the time laddering on SC2, which I've done none of since I started playing WoW.
Why should I persuade you to keep playing? If you don't wanna play, don't, and you won't be missed. I got roped into Cataclysm again by my siblings but I'm gonna give it a month or so and then I'm getting the fuck out again because that game is still boring as shit.

People keep telling me "It gets better".
I kinda want to know why.
It really doesnt. The game itself is pretty boring. The only thing that keeps me playing are friends, and dicking around with friends can be alot of fun.

It doesn't get better. While you're leveling, you're doing these crazy quests, traveling around and discovering new zones. All-in-all, a decent experience. Once you get to the max level however, you're stuck in grinding out repetitive tasks and basically doing the same stuff over and over. The only thing that would improve is your gear. People might say that playing SC2 is the same, but the amount of improvement of execution (that I find rewarding) you get in WoW is rather minimal when compared to the SC series. If you didn't even like the leveling phase, I wouldn't recommend playing on.
You should've spent that time playing SC2 instead, and getting better. I really find the feeling that you're doing better very rewarding, and is a great way to spend your free time.

I really don't understand how people expect to persuade you with that. Personally, the less games for me, the better. It's not like games are a job or anything... what the hell is the point of busting hours in that you don't even enjoy for the hopes of enjoying a game that you PAY to play?
that's just dumb
See, my uni friends are all level 40, and I'm level 20ish, I kinda laboured under the idea that it would be better when I can play with them, but getting there just doesn't really seem worth it. I blogged it because I kinda knew it was the right thing to do in my mind, but I had like 23 days left to play, and some demented part of my brain screamed "its going to waste!".
Anyways I uninstalled and I already feel better for it.

Yeah one of my friends said that almost instantly when i told him I was thinking of quiting, but for me the difference is that with SC, less so SC2, I actually feel something, the adrenaline rush of a win, and I don't feel like I need to play it all the time. With WoW I feel like I'm just scratching a compulsive part of brain, which isn't particularly difficult, or enjoyable.
90% of gameplay in WoW at all levels is grinding something. I played WoTLK and went into cataclysm hoping there would be less grinding. I quit after realizing that was not the case. If you want to PvP you have to grind battlegrounds with random unranked people for hours, then once you get that gear you are just better at playing those same BGs. It's the same in PvE too, you just treadmill for gear every dungeon. once you get a decent piece its obsolete next month and so on. Don't worry i recently unsubbed to focus on SC2 your not missing anything big.

The reason it gets better is because the game doesn't even start (true for most people) until you hit max level and start rocking some heroics/raids/arena/bg's/achievement whoring etc
The leveling grind is pretty awful in virtually every MMO, some are more fun than others but as far as leveling goes, WoW is pretty low on the fun-meter. Believe me, I know! It took me an incredibly long time to go from 1-70 after i picked up TBC, mostly because I hated leveling so much and I didn't have much free time those days. Once I hit 70 the game opened up and was a lot of fun.
The cycle persists, I hated the 70-80 grind, the 80-85 grind, I just plain hate leveling, period. The end game/end result is worth the time though in my opinion.
In the long run it really boils down to what YOU want out of any game that makes it fun or not fun. We can give you recommendations and our own experiences but they can only do so much. Another huge factor for WoW is who you're playing with. The folks in the Team Liquid guild on Horde-Ner'zhul have a blast and guild chat is always very active. We sit around and watch GSL and various streams together while playing lol
If you wanted you are very welcome to join us and see what the fuss is all about for yourself
Ill put it this way. Max level is a different game 100%. Not all people like it, *cough cough* SCRUBS*cough cough* but PvP at max lvl with some gear (even without if you're realllly good) is fucking amazing. Raids are also at this point much less of stupid full time job type endeavors.
10 man raids give the same gear as 25 man raids, (be glad 40 mans don't exist any more xD) Basically if you are good at the game, you will have a very good time. If you suck at video games, you'll probably never quite see it the same as me n people like me.
from my experience, wow is only as fun as the people you play with. if you're not playing with friends it's not really that fun. after all of my friends quit the game i found the game incredibly boring and time consuming, but before that, i wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
My wife started playing about 4 months ago and is addicted now. She really enjoys playing with random people and doing all of the quests. For me the game is all about the end game content. The game is actually somewhat challenging now so it can be rewarding. Definitely more fun than ladder sometimes.
I stopped playing before Cata so I have no idea how things work atm.
In WotLK though one big plus was that it was a game that you could do while doing other things. Basically anything but PvP was so boring that you can just study, read for leisure, watch TV, watch anime, or browse Teamliquid while playing. Obviously in Arena you needed to concentrate to succeed, and most raid encounters also demanded a modicum of attention.
But like if you try to reach max level in WoW without doing something else simultaneously... if your brain has any kind of desire for stimulation at all, you will literally die of boredom. Your nervous system will shut down entirely due to disuse.
Well a big thing in WoW is the community and socializing. It would be the most horrible game ever created if it was offline. To make WoW worth it, one needs a really cool guild to raid or PvP with or a group of RL friends to play with. That is why leveling is so horrible, because you're mostly alone. Blizzard did make the leveling process one hundred times easier and faster though with the new talents. If you have a lot of free time and have a good group of friends to play with at 85, it isn't that bad.
Also, Blizzard made Cataclysm harder. You cannot just deck yourself out in epics anymore from heroics. Heroics only drop blue quality items. Epics can only be crafted, obtained through Valor points (can only get 70 a day; the gear costs like 1.2k-2k Valor Points), or through actually raiding. So that makes the game a little harder.
Healers need to watch their mana now. In WotLK, healers literally never needed to worry about mana after getting some decent gear. I think it is the same for DPS.
The heroics are much more harder now. Depending on the gear level of your group, you'll actually need to CC the mobs. Although not outlandishly hard, the bosses now require the group to know what they're doing instead of just bursting the fuck out of the boss. A few bosses are still faceroll easy (usually through exploited mechanics), but some bosses are pretty fun and unique. A lot of this is gear dependent though. If you're all just hitting the item level to enter heroics, the instances will be pretty hard, but once the group is fully decked out in the gear from heroics, it is just a matter of knowing the fights.
Never tried raiding yet. I'm still waiting for a few of my friends to get geared. If I were you, I would play if you have some cool RL friends to play with at 85. If you don't, then you would be taking a risk because you may find some really cool players, or you might just be stuck alone or with uninteresting personalities.
anyways, I quit WoW forever after playing WotLK for 1-2 months. it didn't have anything to do with what Blizzard did or did not do with WoW. I just stopped having fun playing WoW.

What Whole said is 100% right. I played WoW for about 3 years (vanilla, BC, WOTLK, quit in Oct 2009). I started out casual, and eventually got into hardcore raiding (6 hour Brutallus marathons in Sunwell, ugh) and arenaing. Eventually, all of that gets boring. You get gladiator or get the gear you want or w/e and the only reason I kept playing was because of the awesome people I met, some of whom I still talk to once in a while.
Its difficult to suggest what to do in your situation. If you meet people who you have fun playing with, the game will be much more enjoyable. Maybe try joining a casual or leveling guild, or just try talking to people who you meet while questing.
As any MMO the game is only as good as the people you play it with. In this sense WoW remains arguably not terrible because it has the largest community and thus your chances of finding cool dudes to play with remain decent despite the incredible masses of idiots. If you have good friends that you enjoy playing with, doing whatever random thing, whether casual arenas or old content or whatever, can be amazing. If you don't have any real friends, even high-end raiding will be a chore.
My advice would be to get some good friends, I know TL has a guild that's open to anyone so that would be a decent place to start.
It's fun when you want to be playing that type of game, but eventually the leveling gets boring. All the quests start to look the same.
During WotLK, the only rewarding aspect of playing was knowing that I was in terrible gear yet could out-DPS hunters who should've been able to destroy me on the damage meters.
Eventually, there wasn't much of a reward anymore. :\

Dont listen to them, it was the best before burning crusade came out when good items were actually worth something... I dont play that shit any more but I could see how it's getting worse, they keep adding too much shit!
To me, the most unappealing thing about WoW is the grind once you hit max level - the gear grind.
Gear in WoW is solidified into two groups, Raids and PvP. Back when I was playing, people would optimize their gear by mixing and matching pieces of both Raids and PvP. It was stupid because if you only wanted to PvP, you would still have to go to raids to get some gear which would sometimes drop, only to be contested between other members of your raid group.
And gear is constantly updated. If you don't keep up with the most up-to-date gear, you'll be completely dominated. And if you think the SC2 balance team is bad, oh man...
So whenever I get tempted to start WoW again, I just remind myself of all these things.
