Hello!

If you do not know what all of this is about, and you are wondering what is going on, please read this

So I decided to give blogging about my progress a shot, and I ask you to have patience, as I am not 100% sure about the format of this, and how I am going to write this - I will improve these blogs in the future! Here goes!

General thoughts:

I thought that I would start off by giving you guys my profile link!

I am also currently a bit confused by what is the most efficient way to practice, in the ladder, everyone just plays to win(I even find myself doing this from time to time, even tho I try not to), this is problematic since I don't feel I can learn so much from it. A lot of people is also very BM, so I can't really discuss what I did wrong with them.

I like practicing against practice partners in custom games, as I feel it gives me a lot more help and there's nothing on the line like in the ladder. However, I could use a few more practice partners - good thing there's the practice partner thread here on TL.net, I will see if I can find some there, the one problem there tho is that everyone seems so obsessed with ratings, so I feel like I kinda have to advance in the ladder for the better players to be wanting to play with me.

One way I thought about practicing was to get 2 players(both of the same race) that are pretty close to my skill level to team up in one team where one is doing the micro and the other is doing the macro. I think this could be a good way to practice, since it would force me to play my absolute best since any misstakes will be punished. I also think this might be a good way to learn multitasking, since the microing player is probably always going to be poking at you/harassing you. I would like to know you guys thought about this, is this a good way to practice?

I would also like to know your thoughts on practice in general, what do you feel is the best way to practice? Is it to make your room into a freezer and try to be ready for everything, even if you have to go to the north pole and play polar bears - or is it to just grind ladder all day long? Any tips are welcome!

Ladder:

Since I only have had 2 days, I've only played about 11 or so ladder games (kinda hoping to do more than this in just one day in the future) but it still went really good, only one loss and I advanced from my previous ranking which I think was about 1129 or something to 1379, but it doesn't quite feel like I learned a whole lot from it.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Custom games(against practice partners)

Since I feel my TvP and TvT are my weakest matchups(I'm really happy with my TvZ actually) I thought I would focus primarily on those for now. I am starting off with TvP, so far my practice partner has been SystemKMP(much thanks to him!) - a 1550 rated protoss, and I feel I am starting to understand the matchup a bit better, especially since I stopped being so stubborn about building tanks!

Do you want to practice with me? PM me here on TL.net!

Replays:

This is a part that I am unsure of, because I know that at least I usually don't download random players replay packs, so I do not know how popular this will be.

For this week I just threw in all the games I played, and made them into a .rar (I wouldn't give you guys viruses, I promise! )

You can find the replays here!

I think I need a poll to know what to do with this section, please vote!

Poll: Replays?

Your vote: Replays?

Ask SunTzu!

Okay, so this section, the idea is you ask me anything, it can be about absolutely anything, doesn't even have to be related to my project(but ofcourse it can be!), I just thought this would be a fun thing, and would help add some personality to my blog updates! I do not even know if anyone will even ask anything, but if nobody likes this section, then I will just remove it and come up with something else!

and lastly, I would like to ask if there is anything you are missing in this post? Any section you feel would be awesome to have in future blogs? Post here and let me know!

I think it's an awesome idea, though.

Happened to me several times, I even told them just give me 2 minutes, they said "ok" and then unpaused while I was filling up a printer at work.

Power to chill.

Lol, I guess I could, I don't really see the point of getting poor people spammed tho. Maybe I'll show a screenshot of the worst BMers sometime, but I doubt I will have a section with it :D I want to encourage people to try go pro, not make them realize what a horrible dating place the SC2 ladder is! =)

Idk no offense but when I read your blog it makes me absolutely NOT want to go pro, if simply because there are clearly so many aspiring pros that to rise to the top will take more work than any one of them individually, and we already know there are some obsessive insane people out there. Just realized this might put a damper on things for you, sorry about that. Anyways, we don't actually have to PM them, I just took the idea and ran with it. I think posting bmer ids is beneficial though because then you know who to avoid/squelch.

Hi! Im interested in your project though I would like clarification on what you mean by going pro. Do you just want a high ladder rank or you actually want to compete at big events/get sponsored?

I'm about 2300 on NA right now and float around the 60-100 spots on blizzards top200. I play maybe 10 ladder games a week and go days at a time without playing but I have years and years of hardcore brood war experience. Just wanted to get some credentials or whatever out there before I give my philosophy on training as an amateur/hobby player.

You can play less than other players and do more in less time by practicing with a ton of critical thought and aim for maximizing long term value in your builds. for example, in ZvP right now Protoss is favored in a very long match but also has huge potential for ending the game early with all-in or countering a zerg going hatchery first with cannon rush or something similar. If you are planning a build for ladder and just playing games to get a sort of personal account of what you encounter you will see that P players are attempting to all-in early or do a standard timing push like the 4gate the majority of games. Using this sort of data you can say "Its too risky to hatchery first, as i will outright lose to XYZ." From there you can say "well I like to 14pool->15hatch if i see them making a core, if they fast expand or are making 2gates ill go for fast roach and attempt to end the game" and then play using that simple initial plan and use your small pool of games to further develop your gameplay in more unique situations.

I don't think doing anything special in terms of having two people Team melee vs you(especially in sc2 where playing strongly on a technical level is so much easier than in bw) will be that beneficial. Play against the best people you can and fairly often, if you lose just watch the replay and think about where you can expose them via timings. If you are losing battles regularly in straight up games you will probably need to either think about different unit compositions or learn to control your units more effectively(which is an entire realm of RTS theoretics in itself imo).

Last word of advice: It takes a while for most people to get very good unless they have a certain aptitude and unlimited time. I think with time absolutely anyone can be a monster at these games but just don't be hard on yourself if you arent "getting it" in a short period of time. Good luck.

Hey, thanks for this long and helpful post!

By going pro I simply mean that I want to become as good as I possibly can get, and to see if anyone can become a proffesional. As a first objective I just want to see if I can get a really high ladder rank, and then we will see what I think is possible from there.
