im whining and kind of ranting in this post; if you don't want to read any of that, you can skip this. but i really just wanna let some frustration out... anyways...
I can't run sc 2 on my computer and havent kept up with anything regarding it at all. I hadn't realized how many people left behind bw for sc2 until this week after my first batch of midterms were over, leaving me a lot of free time to play bw on iccup for the past few days.
as someone whos been c- for about 2 years, i find it really sad that im 6-18 in d+ games for the last 24 matches ive played. ive been stuck at mid d+ for like the past 50 games, and its just pretty fucking ridiculous how every other "d+" is like a b rank korean. recently, ive been playing a lot better.... i somehow jumped from my usual 180 apm to as high as 220+ apm without consciously trying to up my apm due to better harass and steadier macro than when i last got to play bw a lot... but its kinda sad and annoying to me that this obvious "progress" is manifested by a demotion to d+.
for the last 2 or so years, hitting C rank has been a goal ive really wanted to hit, because when i first played on iccup, i remembered how badly C's would kick my ass... and even when I hit d+ and then c-, the skill gap to C just seemed huge to me. I've come really close - last season i hit 3900s twice before getting knocked down. I feel that C/C+ rank is the transition rank from "noob" to "experienced". it just pisses me off that all this hard work and obvious improvement on my part from when i was first c- is actually backtracking in progress at this point.... i do realize that all these rankings are relative to whoever is playing, but ive just had my eye on C for such a long time that i want it the same regardless of what the situation is.
i played a ridiculous number of 39 games on sunday cuz i had absolutely no work and hadnt played sc in lieu of midterms... now i just feel i wasted a huge chunk of my time that could be dedicated to other things to further my life cuz im not even getting anywhere with all that effort. as a berkeley student, i question myself on how much time i wouldve had to be productive if i stopped playing starcraft.

well then stop playing starcraft....you aren't doing it for anyone except yourself.

I kinda know what you're saying. While I actually improved a lot so that I went up the ranks into D+, I feel like the D ranks are a lot more of a challenge than they should be. If I play like I used to, which still let me keep D rank, I would probably drop to E. To be honest, I also kinda 'slump' a lot of the times after D+, but sometimes I feel totally outplayed. But more often than not, I think that I could do better. I stopped playing temporarily because I honestly don't feel like suiciding into mech and wondering why I play like shit every game. Glad to know it's not just me who's suffering from the iccups.
|
I hit C- a few seasons ago, and I'm struggling in low D+ ranks atm... I feel you pain. The fact I moved to China and thus playing at Korean hours doesn't help, but yeah the level dramatically increased on iccup.
|
Your D+? THATS DAMN GOOD LOL SERSLY.

I find Iccup is the same skill level before sc2 or even easier. It's all about who you play or how you play it. Now with lesser player base to choose from I understand it's harder to find games at same rank but I don't feel like iccup's ranks are any harder than they used to be, just too few people play bw nowdays and thus it's harder/slower for high lvl players to reach higher levels, so you might run into them more often now.
*I do like the new change they made about tranfer/clear stats tho. I feel it did impact smurfing on ladder and all ranks are more balanced now.
I was C- 2-3 seasons ago with awful stats ~3300 points and more than 200 games played just one on one, now Im C- again with 22-9 with ~100 games played.
*you need to wait for 3 weeks to clear/transfer stats

^ you can but it's easier to tell smurfs now, like if he have 1260 pts that means 2-0 new acc probably some good player...etc
and if he loses 1 and let's say he's 20-1 now he wants to clearstat it he will but he will lose interest now more often, or at least I hope

I just raped a D+ player and got raped by a D player, I love ICCUP! <33

switch your goal to get C in 2v2 i guarantee much easier and easier on yourself too
|
It's a letter that represents your skill according to the players wins and losses on iccup.
The western players have crossed over to sc2, therefore the skill inflation will work downwards instead of upwards.
Your skills are'nt different, it's irrational to hate on something u have no control over (western players switching to sc2).
(In my opinion)

My goal is to somehow reach B- this season. I need to play more this week since Tau Cross is one of my favorite maps and its motw right now.
|
My winrate vs foreigners: 60%, winrate vs koreans: 25%. And since a lot of foreigners switched to sc2...
|
stop playing koreans? thats what i do hahah
|
I think that's really funny, op. If you are concerned about your rank, you should drop the cash for the hardware to play sc2. You'll be high diamond in no time.
|
One of my clanmates just hit C- for the first time ever just a few days ago (non-cheese). It doesn't seem particularly more difficult than previous seasons.
|
since SC2 the D ranks got harder. All the previous D players left for that game so there really isn't any easy competition left on ICCUP
|
I was C- in previous seasons, got SC2 and played tons of SC2. When I go back to ICCUP, I'm UTTER TRASH and I also do joke builds (TvZ 1 base BC, TvP nuke rush, PvT Scout/dragoon). I haven't played that much but so far the D ranks have been pretty easy. I doubt the jump from D to D+ is gonna be ridiculous as that has never been the case
|
Dunno It feels the same or maybe easier to me. My max rank is B and I hit C- yesterday with random on all my games.
If you wanna play better SC then you need to be active. My apm dropped like 140-150 from 180-200 when i was really active. Now i just play for fun every now and then. Dunno why ppl still care about iccup rank... just play the game and have fun . If you dont have fun then stop playing .
Oh yea stop playing koreans is a good advice . I lag with koreans so i almost never play with them.
|
That's a clear example why SC2 Ladder is better than iCCup although neither is perfect. Plus, no dodge.
|
Don't worry be happy! Don't give a shit about your rank.

Honestly, it doesn't matter what rank is more or less difficult. The point is whether or not you're finding worthwhile opponents to play against - for me, it used to be that I generally couldn't find anyone in the D/D+ level that could challenge me, but wouldn't stomp me either. Since I was about C-, I'd have to ladder up all the way there (not far, I know) before I could really "start playing".
so think of it this way: you're finding more challenging opponents even earlier, which is even better, no need to grind up in ranks before you find worthwhile games.

As others have said already, it's true that it will be a lot harder if you play anyone you can, since you'll get a larger proportion of koreans. But if you only pick foreigners (or "people who don't lag", however you want to spin it) you won't notice much difference except maybe it takes longer to find a game.
|
recently, ive been playing a lot better.... i somehow jumped from my usual 180 apm to as high as 220+ apm
That sentence kind of makes me think you're thinking APM is too important. Just play well, don't even check your apm.

yea man, with so little players on iccup now, pay more attention to your win ratio rather than the letter rank.
|
Yeah that would be very stressful (to the OP). The cool thing is though that you are getting really good I'd just have fun with it.

cuz i knew someone would say something like this, i made sure to add a justification instead of just throwing a number out there... i agree that apm isnt always an indicator of skill or progress, but in these particular games i physically felt i was more on top of making sure i have steady rounds pumping, multi-front harassing, not forgetting supplies, positioning my defense while harassing, making sure he doesn't get to expand without harassment, keeping up scv production and sending scvs to work consistently. regardless of what my apm is, i know im playing cleaner games than i was before, but im still getting my ass beat by people who are several ranks ahead of me.... like i ran into 3 D+ koreans on the same night who had A- previous ranks in their iccup profiles... like wtf
|
The point of playing is to get better; if you are getting better (which you claim you are) then who cares? If you just want to have fun, then make new accts and bash D.
|
played only 1 Korean and i lost to him cause dragoon AI is terrible. ive been D+ at max and im aiming for D+ again with a rec of 8-5. so far so good

The idea that ICCUP could be even more torturous than before confuses and terrifies me.

I cant speak much for the D+ ranks because i havent really tried them yet but saying the D ranks got harder is total BS. i got D+ with terran and protoss and am currently working on it with zerg, its the exact same as ever.

Well you're actually just proving what people have been saying: http://www.iccup.com/starcraft/matchlist/682113/1x1.html
Not playing koreans = same as ever.

EDIT : also is there still like 1000~ people on iccup now? or is it less

You don't need to stop playing completely, just take a break for a couple days then see how you do.

1116 on right now.

I played 3-4 games a few weeks ago... I got a couple of cheap PvZ because they were dumb about protecting against DTs (I'm pretty sure this was the first few games where I've used corsair/DT and won). It seemed like the skill level was about the same, but I wasn't anywhere near Korean times. I wasn't super motivated to play more than that though, because I very low level D+ back when there was a ton of people playing. >_<
I wish my SC buddy hadn't stopped playing. -.-
