So I'm one of those people that joined TL during the whole SC2 influx (inorite, stone me), I've never really played bw besides maybe 5 or so games in total at an internet cafe.. And the campaign.

I'm just sick of SC2 for now (I feel as if Terran just roflstomps everyone) and I kind of want to try playing bw just to see what it's like to try and get good at it. Can anyone help me out? Or should I not bother at all.

People in BW are even better man. You will likely get roflstomped even more hard. I suggest just play something else then come back to sc2 when you're ready cause bw isn't going to make you feel any better if you are frustrated by losing in SC2

The UMS is certainly better than SC2s so id recommend you take breaks by going on pub servers of BW

If you feel Terran is too strong to overcome in SC2, then you will lose even harder when you try to switch to Brood War as it will take more practice to get good than it would take practice to beat Terrans in SC2.

BLASPHEMY

dont listen to these fuckers talking about how you'll get stomped. It'd be just like starting anything else where there's a really high skill ceiling. Play for the heart of the game! But it is reaaaally hard to get good at so have fun with that

but DO IT

since it's so cheap now there's really no reason not to do it. just play on bnet first (dont immediately try iccup, i guarantee you will be computer rank).

If you're feeling committed, you can try picking up the ICCUP version of the game over at their site. You will lose, a lot, but it won't be because of balance and if you do overcome it is a very rewarding experience. Just seriously be ready for a -lot- of demoralizing losses. You will feel excitement every time you do win.

Call it naivety but I can't see myself struggling THAT hard at the bottom (aside from any smurfs), I mean bw can't be that different from SC2...
Can it?

I'm sick of SC2 because any idiot can play Terran with no skill while I need to play really well to hold them off.

A D/D+ player in ICCUP is roughly equivalent to a 1200-1400 diamond player. And that's a pretty conservative estimate. So idk you tell us, can it be that different?

I'd have to ask, is your problem with SC2 that you're always losing, or that you're always losing to the same thing. If it's the former, BW might not be the best place to go because it takes A LOT of work early on to master the basics. If it's the latter, try out BW. You'll lose a lot as you get started, but it won't be to the same thing every game.

well what is your apm?

also if you do start in bw i recommend you start with protoss, most people consider it the easiest race to learn at lower ranks.

Staying at D takes months of effort, and thats only the rank you start at. Getting to D+ nowadays, especially with all the scrubs at SC2 and only koreans left, is really going to take much dedication.

You are really underestimating BW. It is very hard.

And I would say D+ is easily atleast 1600+ at starcraft before SC2 came out.
WeMade FOX would be a deadly SC2 team.

I quit playing Blood War long time ago. Albeit I believe it to be amazing spectator effort, I know it's not worth the effort considering my skill level and time investment necessary to increase that skill ceiling.

But being hard and having so many more things to do makes it so much more involved and fun.

I have great fun in BW microing my units and running around.

SC2? A click, they auto surround for me. *cue yawning*

If you play in Asia times you're pretty much going to lose 50% of your games to D koreans that were B last season. The upside is that 'real' D players are going to get their skulls caved in by you, which leads to hilarity when you have the time to play during US hours. Your mirror match is also going to rape because you can copy stuff off A~ players that beat you.

I got to C- on my second season (after playing 20-30 games in the first one), so it's really not that hard to move up. Just get comfortable with the mechanics and get solid build orders, which will take you to D+ by itself. Also, learn to deflect early aggression (you play SC2, you know about this), and you'll win a ton of games.

BW is ridiculously hard to master in every aspect. I got to C- and don't think I've ever done a perfect split at the beginning.

you're going to get raped lol

not counting like 0-91092310 D players, or any rank lower than D

because those people are obviously lacking a real brain.

i should add especially if you're going to play T/Z if you play p it's not that bad for the D ranks, but even then lolol

I usually play Koreans because of my play hours and I my highest was only at a D+ because of that. I honestly think I could've hit C- or even C....but you never know....especially with an inconsistent player like me.

But you should try it out. Sure you're gonna get whupped the first few times, but I think things will get better if you practice.

Also, I hate how people who got here in the "SC2" phase have like...over 1000 posts.

I only have around 600/700.

I say try it, but you will in all likelihood get dominated. I don't mean like SC2 "I'm on a 5 losing streak" kind of owned, I mean "I've played for a week straight and I'm 2-30." I also suggest studying up if you can. Read some of the guides in the BW strategy forum and check out Day9's earlier Dailies. Not only are you taking a huge step up mechanics wise, but understanding the game at a D+/C- level takes a lonnnng time.

If you give it a shot, obviously play on ICCUP and not B.net, and I suggest playing Protoss.

i tried this as well.

but i found it very difficult going from sc2 to sc1.

I know that im wrong about this, so don't flame me, but i just felt sc1 was far more clunky and not nearly as smooth. the control is very difficult. i know the control is actually supposedly better in bw, but im obv not pro bw so it just didnt feel as smooth to me and the AI pathing etc obv isnt as good.

It's just very, very different, and its frustrating when things don't work the same way you're used to.

Also, yeah, you'll get stomped on ICCUP. I was, lol.

You're not wrong, the controls are definitely more clunks and definitely a lot worse. That's part of the skill challenge, though. Once you understand them, you can make the units do what you want most of the time (besides reavers) but doing it in game while macroing is another issue.

I played BW and I don't think I'd want to go back from SC2. I can live without MBS (zerg anyways) and larger groups, but the automining is ingrained in my head now. :|

I'm probably going to use Protoss since I use it in SC2, a nice bonus that it's easier to use :D

What I mainly want out of this is to know what playing bw is like, getting my multitasking/macro up and improving my micro. In SC2 basically all I do is 2a (2 is my army) but I've seen other people micro so efficiently who came from bw.

Will update blog showing how I do.

Good luck, the hardest part about BW is probably that you're going to need 5+ control group armies which need to be constantly replenished

hehe yeah thats kinda what i mean. its like trying to drive a formula 1 car. its difficult, way too sensitive, and you probably won't be able to get the thing to move after 100 tries. but once you've mastered it... its great.

I had no idea what I was doing but my opponent seemed pretty shit too... Then he came with Lurkers (totally forgot they existed) and roflstomped me. The pathing is hilarious.

Oh protoss. You'll get c- in a week
Kidding but major differences if you really haven't played brood war.

Units are stupid as hell. Grab 12 dragoons, right click down a ramp, and you'll see what I mean.
Constant worker production is soooooo much harder.
4gate is actually an all-in.

You need to pick a race, find a good build on liquipedia for each matchup, practice it a few times solo, THEN try a D- game on iccup.

I'm interesting to see how it goes if you actually do it, getting higher than D/D- on Iccup is reaaaaally a lot of work and if you have no BW experience you are going to find it quite hard

Go to channel op teamliquid on ICCUP, there are a decent number of people D- and higher hanging in there who will play or let you obs.

I don't suggest starting BW with a really competitive attitude, but rather just keep exploring builds that you like because even though the game has been fairly mapped out the execution is always extremely complex. Mid/late game Broodwar is incomparable to SC2.

after you play for a long time, you'll know when your dragoons are about to act stupid (you develop a
"sense", I think it's your brain subconsciously picking up patterns) and you can sort of circumvent it.

Lol I'm the same way, I just deny the heck out of any other expos and make them have to try and come out across the bridges, they usually leave once they are out of resources.

Yeah, coming from sc2 the pathing has to be one hell of shock, its bad yes, but it really makes the game a bit more interesting and dyanamic, and makes controlling key areas such as ramps, chokes, and bridges alot more important and effective. You do get used to it though, and as cambrium said you start to just know when your units are about to act completely retarted.

At least it isn't like 4 gate every game.

I just lost a PvP where I had like 4 bases and my opponent had 2 (I think)

At least it isn't like 4 gate every game.

in PvP you have to be really careful about when and where to take expansions, I think that cost youthe game ^^

Good luck mate. BW is extremely hard, but some people thrive on challenge, and thus find success in BW quite fulfilling. I think any BW player, when he plays well (for a given value of well), feels like a veritable god of hand and mind control. Especially when playing Terran. I wear the "Fuck Yeah" face whenever I win a good TvP.

And of course a few skills and ideas are transferable to SC2.

And yes, path-finding, while annoying sometimes, becomes predictable in the face of experience and understanding. After all, all path-finding engines are built from algorithms, formulas, and ultimately logic that originated from a human brain contemplating the problem of creating path-finding.

If you hold a solid D+ and go back to SC2 I guarantee you'll be like, "Wtf is this easy game I'm playing?"
