Now before I went on vacation, I had to move out from my old apartment, and just as I finished moving my stuff, I had my plane next day, so I didn't unpack and the apartment had barely anything to let you live your normal day to day life, but it was fine for me as I would take care of it as I get back.
So as I got back to Egypt, I had tons of things to do besides unpacking and getting stuff for the apartment to make it livable in. Unpacking took about half a day, shopping for the missing stuff took another half a day and some cleaning and fixing took another day and I got most of the issues for my new apartment ready, except for the most important thing: Internet.
My new landowner is a god damn annoying prick who just wants to suck money from you in any possible way he can, when I asked him for the papers for the phone line so I can get ADSL connection to my apartment, he said they already have wireless connection for the building that I can connect to for some monthly payment, he said proudly that the connection is 4MBps and that I have to pay "per computer". I was surprised that the price he asked for was about half what I used to pay back when I lived in my previous apartment for a 2MBps connection, so I told him politely to fuck off and just give me the papers and the stalling began.
Now what's more annoying is that I've been on vacation for more than a month, so my Starcraft 2 on my desktop needs to be reactivated if I want to play offline mode, and my friends are still on vacation, so killing time with them or visiting them to get Internet time was not an option, so I had to improvise.
I turned on my laptop to search for unprotected wireless networks but didn't find any. After killing some more time, I decided to try to search for networks again, i found about 6 in the area but all with passwords, tried connecting to the one called "Jasmin" with password "Jasmin", and BAM, I'm connected! Despite it being very slow and with tons of packet loss, I was able to get online again! So my next goal was to activate my Starcraft 2 on my desktop so I can at least stay in shape while I get Internet connection to the apartment.
And here I face 3 problems:
1. My desktop has no wireless receiver.
2. My Laptop has Ubuntu and with ATI card
3. I'm not really a computer geek, so I don't know how to set up a network with 2 different operating systems with one of them being part of another network and still being a server to give internet to the other one.
I had decided to get the game working on my laptop with Ubuntu then copy it to my Windows machine so I can play. The first obstacle was finding the newest graphics driver, then finding the proper WINE version that runs the game smoothly, then dealing with the crashes and access violation errors, but after 3 days of trying and reading over 150 pages of Ubuntu related articles/instructions, and updating the game while under WINE I DID IT. I managed to run Starcraft 2 on Ubuntu and made it to login page.
Then that said connection stopped working. It was so anti-climatic that I yelled at the top of my lungs "FUCK YOU!!!!!". It was so frustrating that after so much work, the connection would be lost.
I had to go to a cafe with my laptop so I can connect again, I managed to log in and I was so happy. I played one custom game despite everything being on super low graphics and the game whining at me to "lower" my settings, I defeated a "very easy" computer with my super duper 12apm and headed back home to start practicing again against insane computer on my Desktop.
Copied the game to my desktop, ran it and clicked "Play offline". It didn't work.
But the good part is, I found that connection again and I think I will survive the following days on just chatting with friends and reading stuff on TL.net
Happy patch 1.1 Everyone!
