RL first name is "Hajime" (Japanese name which means something like, "first", "to create", "to start" etc), and I was a dumb 7th grader when this account name was made for posterity.
I ended up having the largest army ever in said game (up to that point), and as a result, could never leave the computer for more than 4-6 hours at a time ><

I majored in Electrical Engineering, and quit a minor in Bioengineering after having most of the requirements done. Regret not focusing more on software though .
Greatest lament about the site is that we couldn't reign in the stampede that is the sc2 forum I'm proud to have gotten in shape
Hot_bid easily. Even though we've fought so many times in the past, I have a great deal of respect for him.

I played Ryu/Ken/Yun/Dudley/Alex/Gouki. I'm so bad at the game now that I can't even say which I'm best with. Probably Ken since he's OP .
I don't even know the teams for SBO! Okay I'm goign to go check the site now!
Holy shit htere are some STACKED teams this year. I'll go with 1) Kuroda/Nitto/MOV 2) Rikimaru/Momochi/Boss 3) KO/Ochibi/Tokido 4) Kokujin/Haitani/Nuki in this order
After your retirement from TL duties, on numerous occasions you've been posting like a dick. It will take me too long to list all the threads, NeverGG's "Jaedong fancafe" comes on top of my head but I'm sure there is more.

I sometimes get spurts of anime watchign sprees (2003, 2008, 2010).
There are series that I like, then there are series that I think are quite well done, but aren't really my taste.
ie: Gurenragan I thought was very well done and the VA was good too, but it wasn't really my taste.
So if I had to list the ones I both "like" and think are well made, it would be
Macross Plus Giant Robot OVA Cowboy Bebop Full Metal Panic (Seasons 1 and 2) Code Geass S1 (S2 had major issues but was better than the average anime imo)

If TL loses it's standards of posting, then I would have no reason to post here anymore. The older characters will fade away, and the newer faces will perhaps stay. That's okay with me if things happen to turn out that way.

I'm talking about the moderation in our site. Whats your opinion about it and how things have changed in the last couple of years ?

ohh right, thanks for the reminder.
Quality of posting has gone down, but this is probably a function of dilution rather than the absolute amount of "great posts" going down. It's just harder to spot great efforts by users, so we're left with the impression that things are going downhill. (particularly to us old geezers of the site X_X)
I don't think posts have to be long to be great, but fwiw PGR21 has some ridiculous post length minimum, plus new users cannot post for 30 days iirc.
I remember back in 2006, I was deathly afraid to post at all b/c I knew jack shit about broodwar. IMO the moderation is really lenient now compared to the past. If we had the sc2 forum style posting going on in the broodwar section back in 2005/2006, I'm sure the banning sprees would have been epic. But I guess things can't be the same when the site is becoming so much more public, and once again has a sponsored team and the like.
You know it's bad when many veterans and staff members (to be unnamed) openly admit to ignoring the sc2 forum because it is so painful to read.

I think my favorite shakespearean character would be from "A Winter's Tale". I thought that story was quite good :O.
Thanks for the encouragement
I watch sc2 quite a lot actually. I'm disappointed at how unexciting a lot of the games turn out to be I'm not sure if it's b/c it's hard to tell wtf is going on under all the graphical jizz, or if the gameflow just doesn't lend itself to epicness.
That being said, I enjoyed PoltPrime's builds in the ro64, and the ro32 games have been pretty solid in the GSL.
I'd still watch a Pro Broodwar match TvZ over sc2 any day of the week though.

Gameboy: tetris, zelda - link's awakening (I actually like the japanese title better, which translates to "the island that dreams"), SaGa2 and SaGa3. SNES: FF4-6, CT, bahamut Lagoon, Seiken Densetsu 3, Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time PS1: FF7, Wild Arms, Arc the Lad II, Popoloclois PC: Diablo II, War3, C&C Red Alert (first RTS I played I think), Myst (man I was like 4 years old and didn't understand a thing), Some Indiana Jones game for the mac back in 1990, The Amazing Machine (god this game was so sick back when I was like 8 lol)

=p how do i figure out what i love
Hmm, I think if you encounter something that you want to spend your time pursuing further and further, without someone telling you you HAVE to do it (ie you read a book b/c it's an assignment, rather than b/c you want to learn about what it says), then you're on your way.
For instance, I knew I always wanted to go into high tech business. In order to prepare myself for this, I majored in engineering. However, when I worked as an engineer, I found that I really was not interested in the science itself, but rather, what the science could do for people and customers. Hence my interests shifted rapidly towards product marketing, which is midway between engineering and pure cosumer marketing.
Hmm hopefully this helps.
What I can tell you though, is that if you try to make a living at something you dont have a passion for, you will never be happy with what you spend the majority of your waking hours doing, AND because you wont want to voluntarily put in the extra out of office hours into your discipline, you will never be good enough to excel in the field, which compounds your problem by making it impossible for you to rise up to a position where you can take on responsibility and carry out truly meaningful tasks and decisions.

You go to one of the top ivy league schools Princeton and did a degree in engineering. So my question is as soon as you graduated, were u able to find a job in engineering right away earning a ton of money yearly? I'd try hard to get internships at such companies during the summer. (Mightyatom's blogs are a good place to look for reference in being productive with your time)
What I can tell you is, if you use on-campus recruiting, then it's 10x easier than trying to squeeze your way into the job market after you're "on your own" so to speak. Take advantage of career fairs, your college career services, etc. Also, it's so much easier finding work at a company that is located near your school than otherwise (this is why studying abroad makes things complicated...)

I'd do it if not for my conscience... X_X. If there's demand for this I guess I could arrange for it (btw I stopped storing vods after like early 2009 or something fyi)
Ok, iirc there are a few music school guys on TL (I distinctly remember someone who played the Sax?). I don't know how hard it is to make a living from music, other than that it must be fucking hard ><. I had some music theory major friends at princeton but they've gone on to do other things in their lives. Only guy I can think of from my school who went on to have a career was David Carpenter, but then again he's like the #1 Violist in the world... X_X.
One thing you could consider, is going to a "normal" 4 year program, BUT one that has a strong music program in both performance and composition. This would allow you to further your music while also exploring other areas.
If you can make a living from music though, that'd be really sick. I know some pple in Japan who are able to subsist through their recordings and sales at Events ><

Pretty fullblown. Cause was frustration at my lack of ability to carry out necessary duties, and a feeling of hopelessness towards the situation I was in at the time.
I've cried now and then over the years, but most of the time it's because of frustration over my inadequacies / shortcomings rather than say, sadness.

On September 21 2010 14:14 Yukidasu wrote: Which is the nicer place to live, Japan or the US?
First, this depends a LOT on your situation. Are you a student, are you asian, are you SE asian, are you white, are you black, are you old, are you young, are you wealthy, are you poor, do you work in Japan, do you work for a foreign firm, do you work for a Japanese firm.
All these factors will heavily influence whether Japan will be "nice" to live in.
The simple answer is, nice to live if you aren't working. Bad to live there if you're working. Amenities are nice, everything is clean. Service is #1 in the world imo. Expensive though and pple suck at english.
If you're a foreigner a lot of places ban you. The sex industry bans you. If you're SE asian pple will look down on you. If you're korean or chinese, people will probably look down on you behind your back. If you're white, you're god. If you're black, girls in sluttown, Tokyo love you.

The flavors in Japanese food are much more subtle and reserved. You taste the ingredients themselves more than the flavors that are given to them post-mortem.
Nop never had raw spicy crab
I assume you mean japanese food. Japanese food excels in the quality of the ingredients and making that the main character of its dishes. I would avoid anything complex and go for the simple things. That is why sushi will never be matched outside of Japan.
Anyways, I think going to a proper Tempura bar (one where they make the food right in front of you) would be a good experience for most people, and should be edible to most. (since many people would frown upon raw ingredients)

I think I was originally good at numbers/math b/c I attended 6 days of school (5 days of US, 1 day of Japanese school) and was taking double math courses. In both schools I was fortunate to have friends/classmates to compete with in one way or another.
I wasn't a particularly spectacular student till 7th grade, when I got a B in math for the first time ever. It was a wake up call that I needed to figure out how to study (also I think I got 79.6 in History and narrowly missed a C). My friends were getting 4.0's so i KNEW I could do it as well. I somehow figured out how to study for tests and from there on it was basically figuring out "the system" teachers placed on us, and operating within its rules. (btw back in 5th grade I got like 36 on a take home open book history test lol)
To this day I don't think I'm naturally brighter than the average person. I do however work 2-3x as hard as the average person usually. (though I have periodic burnouts...)
I did academic work after athletics for something like 6 hours a day during HS. NONE of my friends in College worked like this - most of them just shot the breeze.
Also I was blessed to have some Great teachers along the way. 5th and 6th grade Math teacher, 7th and 8th grade Grammar teacher, etcetc.
Hmm... well, hope this answers the question somewhat. Good Environment + Competitive nature I guess is the short answer.

I'm currently taking Japanese at the intermediate level (4 semesters of language required) and I'm contemplating whether or not to take 2 more semesters to acquire a minor in it. I'm wondering if it's worth my time at all since I don't know when that minor would ever come in handy.
On the other hand, I'm really all for learning more Japanese because I'm really interested in Japanese culture due to excessive anime and manga exposure. Should I just pursue the minor or continue learning at my own casual pace?

imo the minor is only useful if you're going to actually use it for something / need the "officalness" of it.
Although it could conceivably motivate you to continue your studies, if you are the type to find it difficult to self-motivate yourself to study languages. I can definitely tell you that college is the least expensive place to learn a language.

Not having ample moderation when we first started the sc2 forums remains the biggest mistake to date. We needed 20 moderators, not 2. The place is a shithole and many respected longtime TL members refrain from reading its contents. I myself have all the sc2 tabs closed.

Probably agnostic... I have largely Christian morals.
I have a distaste for people who push their religion onto others (i.e. try to convert them). I had a long time TL member directly tell me that I would be going to hell b/c I was not Christian. I wonder if that kind of behavior makes them happy... ~_~
I, for one, relish at the opportunity to save my fellow humans from the pain and agony of everlasting hellfire. Any Christian (who believes in heaven and hell) who doesn't actively seek to help his fellow man find salvation is a selfish sicko, IMHO. Of course the effort can be less obvious than going door-to-door, such as causing life crises to foster conversion or kidnapping atheist/Jewish/Muslim/Buddhist/Hindu/Sikh/etc babies.
Anyway, questions: You mentioned "weird Western endings" in your Japanese, can you give some examples?
Do you regularly browse any Japanese sites? I know you did some funny 2ch translations, I'm curious if there are any other sites worth going to for entertainment.
Can you describe your Christian morals? How do your morals look when compared to the ideas of secular humanism?
A bit more private/ignorable: I dunno if you answered this before, but what kind of work do you do now? Do you enjoy it? Bachelors in Electrical Engineering Masters in Technology Entrepreneurship
Resigned from my previous position as an R&D Engineer last year. Wanted to transition to a more market oriented role rather than a pure technical role. Starting soon as a Marketing/Engineering role at a startup in Silicon Valley. Definitely no longer interested in doing development/design work.
One of my biggest regrets is that I was SO convinced that I knew what I wanted to do for the next 15 years, back when I was like 16 years old. Because of this I feel that I didn't explore my interests and other fields of academia as much as I could have back when I was in college. The roadmap that "looks great on paper" can quickly turn to the worst idea ever, if the criteria just don't mesh well with who you are and what your desires are.
Do what you love, or at least "like", because you need this in order to put in the work that will make you great at it, and in turn that will lead you to success or money or whatever you're looking for.

Unfortunately no, I did not pick up the Queen's English while I was in England. A shame really, since it would have surely helped me in the bar scene.

I was going to ask where you got your ridiculous work ethic from but this might answer that question, if it doesn't I'd like to hear any elaborations.
If you could learn a language (assuming you'd have lots of time etc) what would it be and if you had to recommend a language to someone else would it be a different one?
I think work ethic naturally arises when you're able to work on things that you truly believe in or are interested in. During HS, I had an incredible work ethic because I would do everything in my power to get into the best university I could (which in turn, I believed was in my long term best interests). However, during college I felt massive burnout because I didn't have a particular concrete "goal" to strive towards.
Currently I find myself without necessary such a concrete goal, but I instead pursue intellectual interests. These include finance, marketing, data visualization, programming, self reflective writing, design, and reading, among others. I average something like 3 hours of "productive time use" outside of my "job". I think we can all develop great work ethic in areas that we identify with personally.
At this immediate moment, I spend the most time reading online (hacker news is a great aggregator), reading books (god bless amazon), and writing blogs. I don't always update my TL.net blog, but I write something new for my personal blog (link in sig) every day.

As for language, I believe that anyone in business who aspires to be on the world stage should learn Mandarin Chinese. Even if you can't use it "at a business level", being able to speak the language casually will go to great lengths in forging a bond with people from China. Now keep in mind that if you do business in China, you MUST have a Chinese native on your team. However, knowing the language, I believe, will be invaluable.
This being said, the most important language in the world for the foreseeable future will remain to be English. Anyone who is not a native speaker of English should constantly strive to improve their English. Whether you like it or not, it is the world's language.

Found a great explanation online.
That is why the mainstream press and the general population has talked so much about Steve Jobs' death and comparatively so little about Dennis Ritchie's: Steve's influence was at a layer that most people could see, while Dennis' was much deeper. On the one hand, I can imagine where the computing world would be without the work that Jobs did and the people he inspired: probably a bit less shiny, a bit more beige, a bit more square. Deep inside, though, our devices would still work the same way and do the same things. On the other hand, I literally can't imagine where the computing world would be without the work that Ritchie did and the people he inspired. By the mid 80s, Ritchie's influence had taken over, and even back then very little remained of the pre-Ritchie world.

On October 16 2011 13:13 ghrur wrote: Which dining club did you join at Princeton? And what are your opinions about having those clubs in general?
I was in Charter Club for my Junior year.
I have mixed feelings about them. They're a part of the college culture and history there, but they undeniably perpetuate the class and social divide on campus.
Their main benefit is that it contains the debauchery to one location, which means that there are no drunk driving accidents and any emergencies can be tended to very quickly. On the other hand, they cost high 4 figures (or more) per year, which many students cannot afford. It is dominated by a partying and promiscuous culture, which again, many students do not identify with.
If you're the partying type, it serves its purpose very well. I'm sure the institutions are a well oiled machine for churning out one night stands. If you're more reserved, then applying to Spellman with a group of friends will serve you better. (which I did for my Senior year).
The adventurous and irresponsible side of me sometimes wishes that I had "taken advantage" of the opportunities that were there at these eating clubs. But had I actually leveraged my position, perhaps I would be regretting that fact now. Hard to say.
It's surely better to make alcoholic or sexual mistakes during your college life than your post-college life, but whatever you choose to do, do it because you believe in it, and it's what you want to do.

I think life is meant to be enjoyed. The specifics of that enjoyment depends on the person though. I think many of us are forced into norms and acts that "society at large" pressures us into, without ever asking what we truly wish to do, which is a shame.
I really don't know, because I don't know any good browser games. (I'm sure there are some out there, but I've never played them).
I'm not entirely sure where to draw the line between electronics and electrics. I will certainly read a lot of books though.

3) A meteor hits the earth (oh wait, was that supposed to be yesterday?)
