Actually it happened to me once when I was younger too. It started with a girl asking to use my mobile phone. When I gave it to her she started walking away and when I grabbed her shoulder, she shouted “rape!” and a big back guy stepped up and hit me in the face. I was really lucky that my friend was there too. He is a very small and thin guy who also was uncontrollably drunk at the time, but he grabbed the guy who attacked me around the waist so I could run after the girl. I’m still proud of how my friend reacted to the whole thing. | ||

Here's a bit of surreal realism: I once got kind of mugged on the 7 train coming home from work. It was late night at the office, around 10pm -- the train wasn't crowded, but there was enough people that all the seats were taken. I hadn't eaten dinner yet, so I had grabbed a sandwich at one of those overpriced Metro Cafes (god damn I hate eating there cuz everything is 2x more expensive than it should be). Anyway, I'm so hungry I can't wait to get home to eat, so I bust out my chicken sandwich and start chowing down in the subway car. Next thing I know, I hear this deep voice say to my immediate left, "Hey ... that looks really good." I glance over and I see this gigantic black guy ... it's hard to tell how big he is 'cuz he's sitting, but he's at least a head taller than everyone else sitting down, and he barely fit in his seat. The next words out of his mouth was a calm order: "Give me a bite of that." I do a double-take, look at my sandwich that's already 1/2 eaten, then look back at him. "Uh .... No? It's my sandwich???" I'm really confused at this point, I'm glancing around to see if anybody else is catching this, cuz this is really bizarre. I see a few people looking at us, but typical New Yorkers that we all are, nobody says anything and most aren't even paying attention. Then the guy leans in real close to me, gives me this really intense look (not intimidating, more like a really sincere look) and says quietly, "If you do, I'll spare you your life." Now I'm sizing him up again, and decide he's at least 2x my weight and could probably squat 4 of me no problem. His jacket is also really poofy, and could be concealing any kind of weapon. I figure to myself, "Ok look, even if it's a total bluff, it's just a $8 sandwich, it's just not worth the risk." I wordlessly hand him the sandwich, take the rest of my stuff, and move to another subway car. Seriously, wtf? Who does this? And how do you get to the mentality that it's ok to take someone's dinner??? lol. One of the more bizarre NYC experiences I've had. | ||
