so I was in a college camp few days ago, a guy decides to break some ice with a hand game.
He holds out his hand(s), and hold some gesture, then asks "Open, or close?"; repeat over and over with new gesture.

I was clueless but I was able to guess right 2/3 of the time. He said he wasn't trolling, and there was a clue I have to look at.

Anyone know this game? help me out.

Games like this aren't so intelligent sometimes, they require recognition of patterns...

hmm...

is the picture above open?

If he's doing what I think he's doing then what he's doing with his hands is only meant to throw you off.
this is my quote.

This kind of game always has some sort of catch to it. We used to play a game called "is this a pen". You just keep rotating saying "This is a pen, and this is a pen and this is a pen....is this a pen?"

The catch to the game was before that happened the person would say "Listen". If he said listen, then the answer was yes, if he didn't say that phrase before he started then it was not.

The game itself is a distraction, try to listen for clues other than the game itself.

This sounds suspiciously like the "bang bang bang who's dead" game or "how many sheep jumped over the fence", where the hand movements have absolutely nothing to do with the game.

I have no idea what the answer is, but my best GUESS is that it's something to do with what he says. For example, if the number of words he says beforehand is an even number then the gesture is closed and if the number of words is odd then it is open, or vice versa.
Don't hate the player, hate the game

if it's not the hand gesture, it's the words but I doubt that..:D since it seems that he's only asking if Open or close..

nope, it has a pattern depending on the hand gestures or on how he worded the question...

but it's gotta be the hand gesture because the question is always just "open or close?" right? unless the pattern has something to do with how you answered the previous questions.

Here's a hint, the one in the pic is ambiguous. What you need isn't visible from the pic.

Check all of his body signs. Open/closed mouth, crossed fingers, crossed legs, open/closed legs, palm up/down, whether he says "ok so" before open and not before closed. It really could be anything. The key is to be observant of everything besides the hand gesture, since that is most likely irrelevant to the real answer.

yeah it's probably one of those "clue" games.

like Black Magic.
you ask questions to someone who knows the clue and the other people try to get the clue or 'rule'.
Rule for Black Magic is that the thing you're talking about has to be the color black.

"can this tv be used in black magic?" yes
"can obama be used in black magic?" yes
"can a giraffe be used in black magic?" no

another one is the picnic game. you ask whether you can bring something to the picnic.
the rule is, it has to have double letters.

"can I bring strawbeRRies to the picnic?" yes
"can I bring eGGs to the picnic?" yes
"can I bring chocolate to the picnic?" no

People play this for fun? If some dude started just randomly telling me I'm allowed to have eggs at my picnic, but not chocolate or bananas or whatever the hell else they'll say, I'd probably just walk away. And check for my wallet.

We used to do some bullshit game like this, where if you coughed before you asked it was true, otherwise false or some bullshit like that. See if he's coughing...

The only similar game I know comes from Monkey Island 2. To prove you are part of this secret club you need to answer questions correctly three times in a row. The questions are all

If this is X... (holds up a certain amount of fingers from one hand)
What is this (holds up a different amount of fingers from one hand)

Your only clues is when he tells you whether you were right or wrong. Since you need to guess it 3 times in a row, you need to figure out the pattern from the few that you accidentally guess right.

The answer is kinda silly :D

+ Show Spoiler +
The number of fingers he's actually holding up when he says "If this is 4 (or whatever)..." is the answer.

aha noooooooo not one of theeeese T.T

I remember a game where we used materials from other people and we would create pictures and whatever structures we could get from each others belongings. The person that is creating the structure would then ask

"Now who is this?" and they would imitate another person sitting at the table so the point is to keep looking at the person making the object instead of the object being made. aha

fuck these games
troi oi thang map nai!!!

This is probably it. I've played a ton of these games and this is how they usually go.

We were also drinking beer at the campground around the fire all day. I think that added to the fun.

Most likely has nothing to do with the hands. I've played a bunch of games like this and im guessing the hands are probably just a distraction and the open or close is probably referring to something else like his mouth being open or closed.

I think he's trying to tell you "your kungfu is weak".

I've played the black magic one. Icebreakers always felt dumb at the moment, but if they help people relax and have fun, whatever.
