For my summer literature assignment, I had to read a couple of personal essays and then write couple of my own informal responses based on some prompts. For one of my prompts, I had a strong feeling that I could write about professional gaming and how the part of society not involved with it frowns upon it. This is the prompt and what I wrote:

prompt:

+ Show Spoiler +
Take an activity that “may be as highly laudable and exemplary a
thing as it is held by those who practise it” and examine a
primary shortfall of those who practice this activity without
question. Do not take a strictly oppositional viewpoint—provide
a thoughtful connection between yourself and those others.

response:
+ Show Spoiler +
The act of professionally playing a game is not something commonly heard of in one’s every day life; unless one follows that scene. To be able to play a game professionally requires a lot of dedication to practice as well as the ability to perform at a level beyond what is considered normal. In order to do these two things would is considered quite the feat amongst normal, also known as casual, players. Within the professional scene of a certain game, the professional players are considered the highest tier of players for that game, and have the respect of those below them, namely the casual players. However, the praise and respect that comes with professional gaming is only exclusive to that small community, as those outside the community generally frown upon the professional gaming scene.
The negative viewpoint towards professional gaming that is so commonly shared amongst the rest of society is a bit of a misconception that views the dedication and ability to perform beyond the normal as an addiction. Likewise, the fans who follow these professional gamers do it merely as a hobby, but this is viewed as wasting time. This misconceived notion puts a bit of a social limitation on professional gamers, and stereotypes those who follow them, myself included. The gamers are then viewed as the addicts who cannot let go of a mere game, and the followers are then viewed as people who waste their time following them. These gamers, however, are already aware of the social limitations and stereotypes that are intrinsic with what they do, but they practice what they do regardless, making it a bit of a shortcoming. These gamers are willing to deal with these shortcomings, as they are certain that what they do is who they are. These gamers are willing to admit that professional gaming is what they do, and it is them, whereas the followers are willing to admit that following these gamers is their hobby and they are not ashamed, and I am no different.

Another part of my summer assignment is to take one of the informal responses and develop it into a personal essay, and I plan on using this essay and developing it to include the professional Starcraft BW/2 scene.

some thoughts and comments would be appreciated =)

I tried reading it but I got so caught up on this sentence I honestly couldn't focus on the rest of it.

"In order to do these two things would is considered quite the feat amongst normal, also known as casual, players. "

What does it mean?

In the beginning of your post you say "professional gaming" ... I assume you mean video games?

In my opinion, you need to clarify this at least once in your response. "professional video gaming" works... or you could introduce the concept of e-sports and continue to use that term throughout the essay.

It seems like your stance is very biased towards gaming in the first paragraph, but you become more ambivale where you start talking about shortcomings in the second paragraph. I was reading it, and then I got confused by the different POV.

If I was writing this, I'd definitely throw in some comparisons and make the thesis much clearer. It seems like you want to show that gaming is misinterpreted by the public as an addiction and that it's actually a characteristic? Maybe characteristic is the wrong word, but something along those lines.

When the prompt says "do not take a strictly oppositional POV", that means your thesis must be ambivalent. The proof itself can be on the extremes of both sides. Generalizations are very weak when used as proof. The 2nd paragraph is pretty guilty of that, right when you start mentioning "shortcomings." Specificity and analysis > generalization and inference.

I like how you start the paragraphs though. The middle and the ending of your paragraphs need to go in the same direction though.
