POSSIBLE SPOILER! This is a guide to a minigame in the campaign which has no relation whatsoever to the storyline, but some people might not want to see this anyway.
+ Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_JXIN77mGI3Q/TE9iamgRp4I/AAAAAAAAAC0/x0CkcY50CM0/s1600/lost+viking+finish.bmp) So once you start playing the campaign missions, you'll get access to the Cantina and be able to play "The Lost Viking" minigame. It's a scrolling space shooter, reminiscent of similar games made in the 90s. In case you're wondering why you should play it at all, it's a nice distraction and there are achievements to be won. You get an achievement for scoring 125,000, 250,000, and 500,000 points in it. You also get an achievement for killing the final boss, but since that happens every 3 levels and you need to play about 9 waves to get 500k points, that will happen regardless of what you do. The game itself is somewhat fun, albeit very repetitive. I got 500,000 points on my first try and it takes about an hour and a half. It got pretty difficult to fight the boredom near the end, but I knew what I was getting myself into. You can't check achievements in game, so either memorize the score benchmarks or pause the minigame and alt-tab to look up the score levels. Quick guide: The best weapon loadout I could find is the double plasma + double drones. Plasma is way better at killing bosses and keeping drones alive allows you to deal with normal enemies. Your main weapon is either the dinky default gun, the side missiles, or the plasma. Both of those can be upgraded once by picking up the same upgrade again. For example, pick up the "side missiles", then pick it up one more time to have the upgraded version. Future pickups don't do anything. If you're using the side missiles and pick up the plasma, you will switch to level 1 plasma. Same thing if you have plasma and switch to the side missiles. Item drops are random, and rotate over time in a set sequence. The order is: side missile, drone, plasma, bomb. You can hold two drones at any time. More drone pickups do not do anything. If you get hit by most weapons (some boss attacks instantly kill you), it will destroy one of your drones. If you have no drones left when you are hit, you die. If you die, you drop your main weapon upgrades as pickups. Bombs clear most of the screen of enemies and projectiles and give you a short duration of invincibility. Almost always use a bomb instead of risking a hit. Losing drones drastically hurts your ability to deal damage, ESPECIALLY in boss fights. Boss guide The carrier (first boss) is very straightforward. The interceptors don't do anything for most of their life, but fire a few projectiles before they retreat. Then the carrier fires a constant rotating beam. Start out in the middle, then pick a side and move that way when it starts firing. The corruptor (2nd boss) has tendrils that instantly kill you. Using a bomb will destroy tendrils headed towards you and make you invincible. Strafing away from the first tendril almost always is safe. It also will rush you with an instant kill ability. The last boss has several difficult to dodge projectile attacks, and on harder difficulties fires a bouncing blade. I'd make sure I have bombs going into this boss fight- usually only 2 or 3 is necessary for a pretty easy win. Just blow the bombs before projectiles hit you.

lol i stumbled onto the arcade by mistake and found myself wasting a little too much time playing the lost viking. It reminded me of a few games i used to play, it was funny and im sure it won't be the last time i play it
Only got to lvl 2 though
|
I wana play this and compare it to touhou :D
|
my brother is doing it atm, has taken about 40 minutes to get to level 9, with 550k points. One thing you can do is farm points at the minibosses due to the respawning wraiths at the battlecrusiers and the respawning scourge at the swarm guardians
|
Got to 425k on my first try, great writeup about the power up pattern and such! =)

I don't know how you guys are doing it, I just cannot get past the zerg waves. I can get past the first playthrough, but I just lose all my lives on the parts with the zergs that explode and then those big guys that shoot big lines of stuff at you. Every time im at that part I lose 2+ lives The farthest I've gotten was about 300k
|
why the hell does this look so freaking difficult lol. taking THAT LONG just for one achievement? lol im come around to it sometime in the future...

2x drones makes that level really easy. 2x plasma makes it even easier because you can kill the corrupters and swarm guardians pretty much instantly.

+ Show Spoiler +
Finally got the 500k Achievement after 2 closte to 500k stupid loses.
Got to 600k quite eazy, (had 7 lives and about 25 bombs with 2 Plasma and 2 drones when I strated the 5. Zerglevel.... a stupid mistake made me lose a drone, and by tring to recover it is dived into a missle and died. Once your out of drones and you only have plasma... your pretty much fucked in the zerg level, because you can´t really move without using bombs, so you can´t kill the scourge, soe u can´t move even less...
Whatever you do try to always keep your drones up even if it means leting a special pass. Once you got 2 drones and 2 plasma you only need to grab bombs.
If the terran level ist too hard for you with plasma swith to side cannon and take the last 2 boni to switch back to double plasma.( after the 2 battlecruisers ther should be 3 boni left till the boss).
Edit: Oh yeah running into a wraith laser salve and lose 2 drones, while picking up a side missle on the last wave before the thor is extremly stupid, facing the zerg or terran boss without plasma + drones is just pain in the ass.. don´t do it. Well thats why i have 7 bombs left...

Yeah double drone is a must for zerg level, if you have 2 drones the best thing you can do is stay in the mid and move as little as possible.. just let your drones do the work. when you stand still normaly all scourge missles miss you. The only missles that can hit you come from abouve.. so its extremly eazy to dodge.
Don´t rush to any boni.. try to get the bombs, but only if its save.
And well kill the corrupters with plasma.. everything else can be handled by the drones till the 4th playthrough where you need to kill some corrupters.
For the zergboss, just nuke whatever you have, every time he tentacles you dodge the first then bomb and keep nuking. When he does his ram attack just move to the side and when he backs up again start shooting again. 2-4 bombs is all you need and your 95% save. (%5 stupid mistake^^)

This was really challenging for me at first. First few times couldn't make it out of the protoss level, then next few tries couldn't make it out of the zerg level, and then failed a couple of times at the terran level and then terratron. Then I realized I didn't have to pick up the powerups right away and I could be selective and wait for them to change. And the first time I beat the terratron I continued and went all the way to 500k beating the terratron for the third time.
For the whole game I only focused on getting double shot and two point defense drones and then stockpiling bombs. By the time I was done I had like 20 bombs because I was worried it would get really hard.
For the zerg level I pretty must just spammed my attack as always and didn't even pay attention to where the scourge were because the double shot spray and point defense takes care of them. I just focused on dodging the slow moving green attacks. If I was going for a power up I would let up a little on the fire so I wouldn't be overrun with their attacks. If I got stuck I'd just use a bomb.
I didn't really need to use bombs for the protoss and zerg bosses, but for terratron I had to use a few bombs to help with dodging his attacks. For the protoss boss, just fire under it and then when he's charging his attack move to the side slowly to dodge it. For the zerg boss it's pretty much the same, his tentacles move pretty slow and you can see them coming and just stay close to the bottom and move between the green dots. And just go to the side when you see he's about to ram.
|
Quick tip I found REALLY helped me:
DO NOT get plasma for the Protoss level. Get the side cannons and aim so that the Carrier is inbetween your front cannon and your side cannon. Farm the interceptors for points. Doing that allowed me to not fight the Terratron for a third time, which is what killed me every time.
|
Got 470 on my second try and an hour and died -_-.
Almost cried lol. Not gonna try this any time soon.
|
tip: pressing spacebar repeatedly fires faster than just holding it down.
|
What if you just don't kill the battlecruisers/swarm guardians/carrier and farm for points? Seem easier that way.
|
On August 05 2010 14:29 a176 wrote: tip: pressing spacebar repeatedly fires faster than just holding it down.
This is what made it easy for me. First time i tried it i died at carrier. Then I learned about the powerups and drones absorbing hits. Then i came to the levitihain and died there. Then I learned that spamming space makes you shoot faster than just holding it down and got to levitihan level 2, but couldnt try anymore because my fingers were tired of spamming space =P But I realized i could just set up a macro to constantly spam space (through g11keyboard, but im sure you can just find a normal program to do it for you also.) So i did that and got 500k points without losing a single life and had like 30~ish bombs and decided to just quit there.
|
I found that it was easier to switch to the double sidecannons for the 3rd level but switch back to the double plasma for the boss. It's quite risky though since you might get stuck with the level 1 weapon upgrade.
For the zerg level it was much easier once i realised I didnt have to kill the scourge all the time. Basically the scourge will only patrol from top to bottom, only attack while the scourge are in the top half of the screen, this way you will have plenty of time and space to evade their projectiles when they die. All shotting them on the bottom half of the screen does is make it a lot harder for yourself.

Is the game easier on "hard" than on "brutal"?
|
No it doesn't matter. I just did it with a macro, it makes it SOO much easier. 2nd try ~560.000 points.
(didn't lose a single life until lvl 9 and then kinda choked and made it barely to 500.000 xD)

yea after u get so far u really really don't wanna do it again -_- I've waited a few days and im gonna try for the gold this time
aaaargh soo close :S 465 that last lvl just gets so insane and I keep loosing my drones at leviathan so getting them back is nearly impossible without using tons of bombs and dying in the process -_-

I love minigames like this =] games in a game..
yo dawg......

This is getting frustrating. I'm going to get the 500,000 points achievement but so far after about an hour of play I haven't even been able to get past the Leviathan. Seems like he's telepathic and sends his crawlers right in front of me all the time. This is gonna take all day.
EDIT: Managed to get to 401k but then I died.
|
BTW i reached 1 Million but nothing special so ppl dont try it died at 1.224 lol

LV is the biggest waste of time. 30 achievement points for brainlessness.

40 , 125, 250, 500, and kill terratron

I recommend getting 2x Drones and then 2x Plasma Guns immediately, just get bombs for the rest. Switch to Side Rockets at the end of levels 5 and 8 (the 2nd and 3rd Zerg levels) because it's much easier to deal with the mass Wraiths + the laser lines. Then switch back to Plasma Guns right before the Terra-tron. I ended up with like 510k points, 7 lives, two Drones, 2x Plasma Guns, and about 18 Bombs when I finished level 9.
|
I got double cannons, double drones and then just got to around 700k before I had to eat dinner. Never lost a life.
The trick, get multishot cannons, 2 drones and just spam fire. Use bombs when you are going to get hit by projectiles you cant avoid. After the first time through its just rinse and repeat.
I never used plasma. I hate the non side fireing.

I used to hate that too untill I noticed that with double plasma bosses just die so much faster and u don't have to take tons of attack waves from them before killing them and risking your lives.
and with the 2x drones I found I had enough side firing from them.

I noticed that when I use a bomb just when the leviathan has fired his first tentacle all the other tentacles will pull back and u only have to dodge the first one which is too easy. and u'll kill him really fast, try that

plasma + drones will take care of 90% of waves. when you cant kill all, you can use the bajillion bombs you've collected through the levels
|
I lost around 430k... Blah! I made a mistake and died to the Zerg boss the third time around, and got plopped down in the third Terran stage (with a bazillion Wraiths) with no plasma, no rockets, and no drones. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU-

Just got 1.1 million pts, at which point I had to go, so I quit at the ending of lvl 18 instead of hitting continue. (it had been over an hour and a half or something rediculous...)
Here's my guide:
Priority: Multishot 2 drone 2 BOMBS
The reasoning here is that once you get to the later levels, you cannot rely on the drones to kill things, and you also cannot rely on being directly below something to kill it. This becomes essential on the later terran levels, where the entire top of the screen fills with wraiths that take 2+ shots to kill, and if you don't kill em quick, you'll be forced to bomb out of the mass of red lasers they fire. By level 18 I had over 30 bombs, and my deaths up until that point were almost all preventable by a bomb if I'd been willing to spend it. always use a bomb if you think you're gonna die, you get enough of them...
Protoss level never gets harder, it's just ezmode rest time, and a place to stock up on bombs
Zerg gets harder on it's 2nd time, but doesn't seem to change after that, it's overall easy if you understand that you don't have to spam spacebar the whole time. When the scourge scream and sit in formation on the top of the screen, burst down half of them, then dodge, then spam again before they fly down at you. If you get overwhelmed, don't be afraid to use a bomb, this level gives you fucktonnes of them. The leviathan is the most annoying fuck of a boss. His tentacle attack will rape you. Do NOT be afraid to bomb every time he uses it when there are already swarms of green all over the screen. Use the bomb right as he is firing the first one and invicibility will allow you to fly through the tentacles to safety very easily no matter where they are.
Terran is easy at the start, and ramps to insanity later on. on it's second itteration and onwards there are the red side-lasers you gotta avoid. these start very spread out, but get closer together every itteration after the 2nd, until level 18 where you have 3-4 on the screen at once. The battlecruisers also get extremely harder as you go on, because they and their seeker missiles get more and more hp, until you've actually gotta dodge around the lines of seeker missiles in a circle to survive. The number of wraiths and the wraith hp also seem to go up, to the point where they were at least 2 shots to kill the wraiths in lvl 18, and my kill total was over 750 wraiths
Terratron stays the same after he starts up throwing his blue blade, he just gets more and more hp. Once you get the dodgeing of his different abilities down pat he's actually pretty easy, just be ready to bomb if you're caught out of position when he does the combo of orange hand cannons + spiral red from the drones, as it is the hardest thing he has to dodge.
If anyone has seen the later levels I'm really curious how hellish the terran levels get. For all those saying plasma is great, please please tell me how far you get on terran levels with it, as I just don't see you being able to get past lvl 12 or so...

glad to see somebody else with a lot of side-cannon success, I think a lot of these people failnig to get 500k are stuck on the plasma idea because it kills bosses faster. Just learn to survive those bosses longer and stick with side-shot, a lot of the time you can't be in-line with a boss anyways, so side shot probably ends with higher overall damage on them...
|
side cannon>>>plasma cannon for regular level parts, if you have a chance to grab a plasma cannon right before a boss do it, but other than that, you should be just fine to complete bosses with side cannon.
the drawback of not having side cannon for regular levels is really alot worse than the drawback of not having plasma cannon for bosses.
pretty much drone>side cannon/plasma>bomb at all times,
got >500k first try with 3 lives and 10 bombs remaining. use bombs frequently, dont worry about wasting them too much (a good estimate of what can be used:you would probably need 1ish per second boss, 1-2 for 3rd boss, maybe 2 per second stage, and 1 per last stage, first stage should be super easy with no bombs and any weapon)

Yeah terran Level without Side is a pain in the ass, but imho all bosses and the whole zerg level are a lot easier with just plasma and drones.
In the zerglevel you really only need to shoot all non scourge, which is easier qith plasma imho. Sideattacks tend to kill Scourges in akward angles and you have a harder time dodging thos nasty green blobs.
I did Plasma: Protss-Levi then swaped to Side as fast as possible and at the end of terran switched back to double Plasma. Main reason, because plasma is so much faster at killing bosses and the more time you spend the higher the chance you screw up and lose a live.
I only played till 720k so i guess later you need the sidecannons to kill the trash. Until you reach the point where you can only kill the trash with you plasma.
Well i have no urge to try it.

lost viking so much fun :DDD I played this like 8 times, farthest I got was level 8-ish, never got final acheive
|
just got over a million points in the lost viking with over 50 bombs stockpiled and a bunch of lives... after I hit 1 mil i just suicided
apparently blizzard did not have the foresight to have the levels get harder after level 6... they are all the same
this means that you can go on forever and someone with enough time to kill could get infinity points
so no, there is no hidden 1 mil achivement =p
|
shits hard i cant get passed 25k -_-
|
Someone has tried getting to 1.5 millon, too. There's nothing there either.
But yeah I've found the whole thing to be incredibly easy. I generally never needed bombs except for a few on Terratron and one here or there vs mass scourge if I got myself stuck in a corner.
I'm not really sure what those laser things do on the 2nd/3rd terran levels, but I just avoided them for the most part. They didn't seem to do any damage when I did go through them, though.

i went up to 900k like a dumbass so not worth it T__T decided to give up
