I think Ashes of the Wake by Lamb of God is untouchable. Death metal isn't defined by a raspy voice, just the theme of death - so I appreciate technical finesse and a moving melody when I can find it.
No that's not death metal and thats a silly definition. If there's a country song that sings about death that's not death metal of course... Same thing if there's death themed metalcore - it's still metalcore.

What got me into metal are the extreme skill requirements. If you're looking for technical stuff I can recommend this German death metal band
If someone's really interested in heavy metal but doesn't know much (besides Priest, Maiden, Accept etc. that everyone knows) this is a really good site: http://vibrationsofdoom.com/test/index.html Hundreds of records available to stream, some of these are very hard to find anywhere
Cirith Ungol, Cloven Hoof, Manilla Road, Sacrilege, Saint Vitus, etc etc records
I highly recommend www.metal-archives.com for easy access info on every goddamn band you can think of, though I'm sure most of the people here know the site by reputation at least, it's basically the TLPD of metal with user submitted reviews (which you can choose to ignore if you wish, there are some very good reviewers and a lot of bad ones. There is an approval process, but it's obviously not going to be perfect). The forums used to be really good in like 2006, not "TL of metal" but still, and now they're somewhere in the "TL SC2 forums of metal" area of quality.

Less mainstream and more Immolation, Ignivomous, Vasaeleth, Portal, Defeated Sanity, Convulse, Interment, and Necrovation plox.
Agree with what you've said here. Don't understand why people like Necrophagist so much... just sounds like some guy who practiced a LOT of guitar and decided to record his exercises, to be honest.
I almost saw portal at Maryland Deathfest this past May (Autopsy was there, Gorod, Naglfar, Melechesh, and a bunch of other amazing bands) but didn't go .________.
